#WOULD HE SEE ME TUCK HIS NOTE INSIDE MY PHONE CASE ): SNIFFLE

Note
Moze was known for being sneaky and basically invisible, since barely anyone sees him while he sees everyone and everything. It might be creepy to think about, but this didn't intimidate you at all. Rather the opposite - this was one of the reasons why you became interested in him.
But your beloved would've never guessed that you can be the sneaky type too. At first, you sneaked into his heart slowly and carefully - and now you are sneaking sweet little messages on sticky notes everywhere he could see them.
Be it in his lunchbox, in his trouser pockets, on his daggers,.. everywhere he would find a sweet message like “Remember that you are so, so loved by me, Moze! ❤️” which he certainly wasn't used to seeing, but he didn't mind it in one bit.
He actually adores it and they became one of his favorite parts of the day - besides the part where he would see you.
So don't be surprised when you find a sticky note with the message “I love you, Evie.” one day too, and of course - he would've sneaked it into your lunchbox, too while watching your reaction in the shadows, slightly smiling to himself.

Light coming through the cracks of the blinds, making you squint your eyes when the daylight beams into your eyes, head resting on the kitchen island Looking up, you saw the clock ticking on the wall, 11:32 am.
You had stayed up till 5 am, waiting for him to come home, but seemingly, he never did. Reaching for your phone, you saw 4 missed calls from the one and only,
Jeon Jungkook, saved in your phone as “Koo <3″, Rows of messages too, all from the same contact.
Koo <3 [05:34 am]
baby pkck me up pleseee
im so wsated
Koo <3 [06.46am]
dont be mad at me jsut pick me up
i dont knw hewere the fuck i am
i love you
Koo <3 [07:31 am]
i got a rde home i’ll be home by 12
i need to talk to someone frsit
im sorry if i woke ypu dont be worried
You took a few moments to collect your thoughts, but there wasn’t much to collect. This whole thing, was a routine by now.
Standing up to make yourself a cup of coffee, you could literally not feel your own backside, you were so sore from the barstool you had been sitting on all night, and it made you groan in pain.
Two coffee cups right beside the kitchen sink, which you couldn’t bring yourself to clean up, because it was from the last time you had coffee together, which was 2 weeks ago.
The inside of the cup had a coffee crust at the top, and both your lip tint marks on the outside.
When you finish your cup of coffee while watching a bad telenovela, you go sit in your favorite chair and pull out a few books from the backpack hanging on the chair next to you, getting ready to get some studying done.
For a few seconds you imagine Jungkook hanging over your shoulder laughing at the way you write your A-s and R-s, or the way you always sign your homework at the bottom of the page.
And when you open them, there’s no one there. The only sound is from the refrigerator, making refrigerator noises.
You had met Jungkook 3 years ago, when you were at college orientation, senior year of high school. He also wanted to attend Yonsei, just like you.
And when he whispered to you about how bored he was, you couldn’t help but giggle, and then you got yelled at.
It was worth it though, because everyone was jealous of you afterwards, the Jeon Jungkook had talked to you.
Jungkook was an all-rounder as they called it; great physique, intelligent, charismatic and great at sports.
And god, he had a beautiful face, and such a filthy mouth, and it didn’t go long before you gave in to his seductive ways and slept with him. The morning after, he wasn’t in bed with you, and your heart sank.
Luckily, he was in the kitchen making you breakfast.
It was all bliss from there, showering you with love, gifts and kisses for two years, and you even ended up moving in together.
And now? You barely remember what he sounds like, smells like and is like.
A distant memory, just as distant as him.
Your train of thought was suddenly interrupted as you heard 3 knocks on your door. The exact same way he had always knocked when he had forgotten (or lost) his keys.
And even though you should have let him suffer a little, you rushed to the door to open it, and in front of you, was your biggest nightmare.
It was your love, crying his eyes out, bleeding from one of many cuts on his face, looking nearly dead. He collapsed into your arms, and you could only utter a few words, along the lines of:
“How could you do this to us?”
As he was laying curled up in a ball on the couch, face plastered up, ice bag on his knee, wrapped up in a blanket, you realized. this was your que to cry.
So, you did. You cried in silence, sitting across the room from him. You weren’t mad at him for coming home late, or getting in another fight, probably the 5th just these past months, you had gotten used to that by now.
There was a whole other reason that made you cry.
He smelled like Victorias Secret Bombshell, you recognized the scent because it used to be your favorite, however, now you’ve moved onto something less sweet, and more elegant, like Caroline Herrera.
He smelled like someone who wasn’t you, his girlfriend.
He smelled like another girl.
It didn’t hurt as much as you thought it would. Maybe because the Jungkook that had come home to you that morning wasn’t your Jungkook.
Your Jungkook was varsity jackets, star of the american football team (which your school was known for), selfless and humorous, and he would always take care of you.
Your Jungkook was not ungroomed hair, cigarettes and worsening grades. He was not cold and lifeless, and he would never make you cry.
Despite this, you were carding your fingers though his hair, thumb wiping away the blood on his lips while he was sound asleep as you slowly fell asleep next to him.
Maybe it was time to let him go.
Maybe.
You woke a few hours later from your phone vibrating.
Kim Namjoon (school) [07:01 pm]
Hey Y/N! Have you started working on the statistics assignment?
If you haven’t, would you be interested in meeting at the library tomorrow? You’re really smart and i’m kinda struggling ://
You [07:03 pm]
i finished it yesterday, but if you buy me coffee i’ll come help you hehe
Kim Namjoon (school) [07:04 pm]
You’re the best, I’ll bring you a machiatto!! :D
Maybe it would be nice for you to get out of the house, even though you hate the thought of it, and you would much rather just swim in your own sorrow.
But you did go out the next day, and you helped Namjoon get a decent grade, enough to pass with good margines, he thanked you by taking you out for ramen at a convenial store not too far away.
You thanked him for the ramen with a trip to the museum, and he thanked you for the museum trip with a picnic in the park at night, which led you to crying over Jungkook in his embrace, telling him every single little detail.
He made you realize it was time to let Jungkook go and make room for new people to enter your life.
You went home that night, and you found Jungkook passed out on the couch, and you could genuienly feel your chest tighten. Soft features which stood out under the moonlight glow, disheveled brown locks which hung down in his eyes.
He was gorgeous, until you saw the credit card on the table next to three bottles of soju and an empty beer can on the floor. And you knew what he had used the credit card for, though you didn’t want to say it out loud.
You cleaned everything up, and you threw the residue of the white powder right in the trash can, and you recycled his bottles and cans before finally, nudging him to wake up.
“Jungkook, wake up.” You spat coldly, or at least you attempted to.
He groaned, rubbing his eyes before opening his eyes, and s huge smile on his face. “Y/N, you’re home!” He reached to kiss you, but you backed away.
“Y/N?” Jungkook questioned, he didn’t quite understand what your intentions were.
“Don’t try anything Jungkook. This was your last chance, and you fucked it up, again.” The room turned ice cold. “I’m getting you help Jungkook, you need help. And then...”
He understood what kind of help you meant, and since he had now sobered up, he agreed, nodding. “And then...?”
“And then.” Your words were ludged in your throat. “And then I’m leaving you.”
His whole face dropped, smile turned into the frowniest frown you had ever seen, and it was all silent before his lower lip starts trembling, and his eyes start turning glassy.
“It’s alright. Sorry for burdening you.” Was all he could say before tears rushed down his cheeks, and he started shaking.
So you did what you always had done, and you wrapped your arms around him, head resting on your chest as he sobbed.
“Is there anyone else?” he cried out before another wave of sobs hit him.
This exact question made your stomach hurt, and your throat burn. You really had no idea.
Or you did, but you didn’t want to.
You loved Jungkook so much, but you couldn’t be with him in this state. So you did what every rational person would do in this situation.
“Yeah.”
You lied.
“Oh ok. I don’t have the right to be mad do I?”
You shake your head no.
“I love you Y/N. I’m sorry I’m so messed up.”
“It’s ok.” was all he said before he fell asleep in your arms again.
That night you slither your way out of his embrace and you pack your suitcase in the dark, bringing all your essentials, trying to be as quiet as possible so you didn’t wake Jungkook.
Packing enough for two weeks or so, you make the bed and leave your t-shirt “accidentally” in the bathroom, and you make sure all his clothes are folded, and then you sort his pencil case, throwing out old pens and worn out erasers.
You leave a grocery list on the counter, and you tuck him in good under the blankets after you took his jeans and socks off so he could sleep comfortably.
You placed his vitamins and medicine by the refrigerator so he’ll see it when he goes to grab something to eat.
Puffed up pillows, a pair of sweatpants, t-shirt and underwear is now placed neatly on his bed. Then you walk into the kitchen again, and you see Jungkook still sound asleep, sniffling a little still.
There’s one last thing, and it makes you cry. It makes you sob so loud you cover your mouth and muffle the sound you make. Sinking to the floor, your whole body is in contact with the cold tiles.
Only a year ago you could never imagine yourself even shedding a single tear over something as small as this, but here you were, on the edge of a panic attack.
Two worn out, matching couple mugs still placed by the counter. one if the first things you two had bought together, as well as the necklace hanging around your neck.
Finally, you stopped crying and started cleaning the mugs, lip trembling as you dried them and placed them in the back of the cabinet.
You unhooked your necklace and laid it down on the counter, and the biggest lump formed in your throat.
Actually, there’s a little detail you forget.
You kiss Jungkook on the forehead and leave a note on the coffee table.
“Dear Jungkook,
If you want to make this up to me (this does not mean a new chance!!) you call the number at the bottom of the page. No matter what happens, I’ll always have room for you in my heart. You even have your own little VIP lobby in there. And - if it’s urgent, call. I still care for you, and I always have. You were the best boyfriend I’ve had, but good things always come to and end, don’t they? Anyways, I’m tired so this letter fucking sucks, but deep down you know how much I love you. Remember to get groceries, shower, get fresh air and study. If I forgot something you can keep it, as long as you call the number and tell them you’re my friend. They’ll help you love. Try and get a part time job too, your student loan and your dad’s money won’t last forever. Good luck Koo. Hwaiting!!
-L/N Y/N <33″
You cringe when you think of the letter’s contents, before you roll out your suitcase out of the front door, whispering a faint “Goodnight Love.” as you close and lock the door behind you.
Standing by the elevator, you cry again. This time, louder, but you still reach for your phone and type out a text to the newly edited contact in your phone.
You [02:13 am]
coming outside now, im a crying mess and im super cold, is your car heated?
sorry for making you wait btw :((
Joonie <3 [02:13 am]
dont worry about the crying part, i’ll hold you. and yeah car is heated, so waiting here wasnt all that bad. you ready for this?
You [02:14 am]
i have no idea but i cant stay here any longer and i trust you sooo
lets start our new chapter. eh?
4 months later...
He had been good to you, great even.
You had been on expensive dates, picnics, had heart to heart conversations, and he’d been so understanding.
Today, it was your 2 month anniversary, and he had asked you on a magnificent date, which he had planned every second of.
At the end of the day, you told him how you don’t love him. He said it was alright. Namjoon loved you, so much, yet he understood you needed time.
You went to sleep that day, warm in Namjoon’s embrace, wondering how Jungkook was doing.
You felt bad, but you missed Jungkook.
You were both with someone new now, and you knew he was in good hands with someone stable enough to care for him.
Before your eyes closed shut, you shed a few quiet tears and hoped that you’d fall in love with Namjoon soon, and deep down you knew you would.

hi!!! congratulations on 200!! that’s so exciting and it’s so well deserved 🤍 i was wondering if you could do something with 9 and 17 from your prompt list?
It’s Just What We Do for Each Other
Summary: You had a really bad day. Luckily, you have the world’s best boyfriend.
Word Count: 0.4k (short but sweet!)
Content: just pure fluff
A/N: this is the last request i have received from my 40 prompts! i am open to doing more if you just send me an ask but otherwise, this is it for this prompt list for now
Masterlist
Spencer opened the door to see you crying in the doorway, drenched from head to toe.
“Oh my god, love,” Spencer pulled you in for a hug with no hesitation even though he would soak his own clothes.
“I-I was w-walking on the street and then a taxi hit a puddle and s-splashed me and I-I dropped my phone and keys and my n-notes,” you sniffled.
“I am so so sorry you had such a bad day, sweetheart. You’re shivering, let’s get you into some warmer clothes first, okay?” he guided you into your shared bedroom.
“Can I take your clothes off?” he asked quietly.
You nodded and Spencer proceeded to gently strip you down and dress you in sweats, fuzzy socks, and his lavender sweater which he knew was your favorite.
“I’ll be right back,” he tucked you into bed, turning on the TV to your favorite show and planting a kiss on your forehead.
You heard occasional clattering in the kitchen and Spencer came back into the room with a mug of hot chocolate and a steaming bowl of mac and cheese.
“Thank you,” you spoke softly as Spencer set the food on your bedside table.
He gently pushed you forward a little so he could get in bed behind you with his arms wrapped around you and his legs straddling you.
Then, Spencer grabbed the bowl and poked some noodles on to the fork, blowing on it to cool it down for you.
“Open, please,” he whispered.
You opened your mouth and Spencer fed you the cheesy noodles. The nostalgic taste warmed your insides and you smiled softly.
“Sip,” he instructed, bringing the hot chocolate up to your lips.
Once you were done with your dinner, Spencer began to slowly stroke your hair and massage your scalp. You hummed in content.
“My mom used to do this and it would always make me feel better,” Spencer whispered, continuing to brush his fingers through your hair.
“Mmh, I don’t deserve you,” you hummed.
“Y/N, you know I hate when you say that,” Spencer spoke seriously.
“But you are too sweet,” you turned around to hug him, “I love you so so much.”
“When I have a bad case, you always make me my favorite meal and distract me with your hugs and kisses. It’s just what we do for each other,” Spencer smiled.
“Also, I baked brownies today. I think I’m getting better at it. Baking is actually rather fun when you don’t worry about the measurements being exactly correct,” he spoke.
“This is why I married you,” you grinned, “I’m sure they are absolutely delicious, love. I’ll have one in a bit, I don’t want to leave your arms just yet even if it’s only to walk 10 feet to the kitchen.”

It’s A Love Story - Part 4
Part 3
The night of the fall formal, (YN) was up in her room, sitting by her door which was cracked open, so she could listen to everything going on downstairs. Gerard left first, going to Ray's to work on songs and be antisocial nerds together. Then Mikey and their mom left to take him to Kristin's friend's house for group photos before the dance. That's when (YN) started to get ready.
Frank knew she had been disappointed that she couldn’t go to the dance with him, so he promised he'd make it up to her. He told her to make herself up as fancy as she wanted and he'd come get her that night when everything was ready. She didn’t know what the evening would entail, so she had been buzzing with excitement and nerves ever since.
She pulled on a black dress, adjusted the necklace that Frank gave her in the mirror before doing her hair and makeup a little, not much more than she normally wore. She was just writing her mom a quick note when she heard something hit her window. Rushing over she saw Frank down below with a handful of pebbles, dressed nicely in black jeans, a button down shirt and a zip up hoodie over it, ready to toss another pebble up at the glass.
(YN) grinned at him and he waved her down. She motioned that she’d be down in a second, before hurrying to finish the note and rushing downstairs.
“Hey gorgeous,” he smiled and (YN) blushed. “You look really, really pretty.”
“Thanks,” she said, tucking her hair behind her ear. “So where are we going?”
“Back to my house, come on,” he said, heading for the car.
“Wait, you drove here? But you don’t have your license yet!”
“It’s only around the corner, besides I have my learners permit,” he shrugged.
“You’re such a bad boy, and that’s what my brothers were afraid of all along,” (YN) feigned shock.
“Oh you know it, babe,” he smirked as they got in the car and they both started laughing.
When they arrived, she followed him into the house, but she grew confused when instead of stopping to take his shoes off, he continued toward the kitchen.
“Wait, where are you going?” She followed after him. Frank just smiled and opened the door to the back patio for her. When (YN) stepped through, she was at a loss for words. Twinkle lights were strung up, and paper lanterns hung overhead. On the table was a bouquet of flowers, a portable cd player and a portion of Frank's extensive music collection.
"You can't go to the dance, so I brought the dance to you."
"You did all this for me?" She marveled, looking around.
"I wanted you to have a special night," he replied.
She grinned before throwing her arms around him in a big hug. "Thank you, it's amazing!"
"Wanna dance?" He asked when she pulled back. (YN) nodded and they started to look through the music to find a track they both loved.
"How about this one?" (YN) suggested, holding up her favorite CD.
"Perfect," he nodded, putting it on.
His hands found their way to her waist and she draped her arms over his shoulders as the music began to play. They swayed slowly in time to the music, dried leaves crunching under their feet.
"Thank you again for this," she smiled, looking around at the beautiful scene.
"Of course, I wanted you to have a special night because,” he paused, glancing away, before looking back in her eye, a little nervous. “I, I love you (YN). Like more than how we’ve always said it as friends. I’m really in love with you.”
(YN) felt her heart skip a beat and her knees go weak. “Oh Frankie,” she whispered. “I love you too, so much.”
He leaned in and kissed her, pulling her body closer to his, and she wrapped her arms around him, one hand running through his black hair. They’d kissed hundreds of times by then, but this was new, it was special. They were in love and it was perfect. Except that no one could know.
They stayed outside a while longer until (YN) began to shiver in the cool autumn air. Frank slipped off his sweatshirt, putting it around her shoulders before they headed back inside.
“Movie?”
“Sure,” she yawned, plopping down on the couch. “Nothing too scary though.”
“Got it,” he replied, selecting a movie and putting it on.
She curled into him when he sat down, resting her head against his chest, listening to his heart beating. He wrapped his arms around her and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
“I like this hoodie,” she murmured. “I like that it smells like you.”
“I’m not getting it back any time soon, am I?” He laughed lightly.
“Probably not,” she smiled up at him.
"That's fine," he replied, returning her smile.
Sleepiness began to pull at (YN) as she snuggled up closer to Frank, even if that was hardly possible. Her eyelids grew heavy as she fought the feeling, trying to stay awake, not wanting to miss out on a second of the date.
The next thing she knew, she was waking up to the sound of a telephone ringing. She sat up, and realized that Frank was just waking up as well, before scrambling for the phone.
“Hello?” He asked, voice still thick with sleep. “Oh hi… shit, really? I’m sorry, we fell asleep watching a movie, I’ll bring her right back! Bye.”
“What’s going on?” (YN) asked, her heart racing from waking up so suddenly.
“That was your mom. It’s like 2 AM and she was wondering where you are.”
“Oh shit,” (YN) gasped. “Did she sound mad?!”
“No, just concerned,” he said, shaking his head. “But I can drop you off, so you don’t have to walk so late in that pretty dress.”
(YN) nodded, head still spinning. The ride back to her house was silent, other than the music playing on the radio. Before pulling up to the house, he cut the headlights, in case anyone may see them and try to figure out who was in the car.
“Thank you for a wonderful night,” (YN) said, still a little sleepy. “It really was beautiful.”
“Of course,” he smiled, reaching over to take her hand. “I’d do anything for you. Want me to walk up?”
“Better not. Gerard’s car is here, he might still be up,” she sighed sadly.
“What’s wrong?” Frank asked, noticing the shift in her tone.
“I… I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you anymore! I wanna, I wanna wear your sweatshirt to school and go to dances with you and hold your hand and,” she felt tears start to sting at her eyes. “I wanna tell everyone that I love you, but I can’t risk them kicking you out of the band or something worse! It’s all my fault,” she sobbed.
“Oh babe,” Frank soothed, pulling her against his shoulder, letting her cry, stroking her hair. “It’s not your fault, you’re not to blame for any of this. And yea, I wanna tell everyone how much I love you too, but I’ll wait as long as we need to. We got forever.”
(YN) wiped her eyes as she pulled back. "Do you mean it?"
Frank nodded. "You and me, forever."
(YN) smiled and sniffled. “I’m sorry, I get emotional when I’m tired.”
“I know,” Frank smiled. “I’ve seen you tired a lot of times.”
“Right,” she laughed lightly. “I guess I should get inside.”
Frank nodded. "I love you, (YN)."
"I love you, Frank," she replied.
He leaned in and kissed her tenderly before she slipped out, closing the door as quietly as she could, and hurried inside the house.
She knocked on her mom's bedroom door to let her know she was back before finally arriving to the safety of her room. She changed into her pajamas, but pulled Frank's sweatshirt back on again and climbed into bed.
"Forever," she sighed contentedly at the thought.

“The Tall Man” Rewrite
Summary: A few additional moments and scenes from “The Tall Man” episode.
A Jemily comfort fic again, this time with JJ.
Read on AO3
“Breakfast is served.” JJ set out two plates of wheat bread, scrambled eggs, and green grapes for Henry and Michael.
“Now what do we say, boys?” Emily said, appearing from the kitchen behind JJ.
“Thank you,” their sons said in unison.
“You’re welcome,” JJ answered.
Emily held two cups of coffee for JJ and herself, kissing the blonde’s cheek when she gave one cup to her. JJ smiled and thanked her wife.
“Any special requests while we’re here?” JJ asked the boys.
“May I have some ketchup with my eggs?” Henry piped up first.
Michael followed after, “Can I have lime juice?”
Emily and JJ looked at each other before bursting into laughter. “Lime juice?!” the blonde mother playfully exclaimed. “What? On your eggs?”
“I’ll go get some,” she said, ruffling her youngest son’s blonde hair and going to the kitchen.
A buzz was heard from the kitchen table and Emily took a look at her phone, receiving a text from Penelope. As she read the message, her eyes widened. JJ’s not gonna like this, she thought and clicked her tongue.
On cue, JJ came back with a glass of lime juice for Michael and saw Emily’s worried expression. She frowned at her, “What’s wrong? Is there a case?”
The older woman slowly nodded, “Yeah. Penelope just texted.” JJ took the phone from Emily and looked over the message. Her body stiffened and eyes widened as memories flashed back to her. “East Allegheny,” she blinked.
“Your hometown,” Emily stated.
JJ sighed. “I swore I would get out of there and never go back.”
“Look, Jen, if this is all too much, I’ll tell Penelope to look after you,” Emily offered. JJ told Emily before that she never wanted to go back to her hometown because it brought too many painful memories for her. Emily respected her wishes and kept her word.
The blonde shook her head, “No. I have to go. Right?”
“If you feel it’s right,” Emily gave a neutral answer, knowing she can’t control her wife’s decisions. “The case is in the woods, two girls missing. In Dead Man’s Conservatory.”
“Wait, wait. Where?” JJ backtracked Emily’s words, looking at the text again.
“Dead Man’s Conservatory. Is that important?”
Emily pinned a victim’s picture up on the clear board. “Ok, so let’s roll with this for a second. Bethany has a secret boyfriend. He doesn’t want to be exposed, neither does she. But then, Chelsea gets her hands on something neither one wants her to have.”
“Yeah,” JJ nodded. “I think I know what they were looking for."
“Right,” JJ absentmindedly responded, nodding.
“So, the jewelry has to be the key to all of it. What motivates them to this extreme?”
All of a sudden, Emily’s voice becomes a little distant to JJ. The blonde conjures up a memory she had been locking away in the past as she nodded along to what Emily was saying.
“JJ?” Emily’s voice became soft when she saw her wife distracted, her professional voice breaking.
The blonde looked up at her, breaking through her cursed memory.
“Do you want to talk about it?” The unit chief gave her a sympathetic look with her eyes softening.
JJ blankly stared at Emily for a few seconds, contemplating on telling her why she’s been off during the whole case. She lightly shook her head and bit her lip.
“Look, ever since we took this case, all of these…” she exhaled out a breath before continuing, “memories are coming back, and they are not good memories, you know.”
“About Roslyn?”
“Yeah. Like, that morning she took my father’s razor,” JJ started. “I found her. And I just stood there. Frozen. For probably 10 minutes. It’s like my brain couldn’t, um, comprehend what I was seeing.”
She started softly crying at the memory, sniffling. “You know, sometimes l think- I think that’s why I took this job. So I’d always know what to do. So, I’d never freeze again. So, can you- can you give me something to do, Emily? Because I am starting to freeze up again,” JJs voice cracked as she blinked her tears away.
Emily checked to see if the office door and window blinds were closed before stepping closer to her blonde wife. She knew it wasn’t the appropriate time or place, but she wrapped her arms around JJ's back and pulled her head close to her chest. JJ reciprocated by wrapping her arms around Emily’s waist and quietly sobbing into her body.
“Shh, shh…” the older agent cooed. “It’s ok, just let it all go. I’m right here.” She rubbed her back in a soothing manner.
“I miss her, Emily,” JJ cried.
“I know. I know," Emily kissed the top of her head. After a few moments, JJ calmed down and slowly pulled back, wiping away her tears.
“Are you ok?”
JJ nodded and cleared her throat, “I think so.”
“Ok,” the unit chief softly kissed her lips and JJ relaxed in the contact. The younger woman gave a small smile, “Thanks.”
JJ was staring through Chelsea’s hospital room window as rage started to build up in her body. She gripped onto the necklace she had taken off when Chelsea pointed it out to her, instantly coming to a realization when she did.
Emily pulled back and nodded. She ran her fingers through JJ’s soft blonde hair, tucking some behind her ear. She then picked up a file. “Luke and Tara are going back to Ally. They are going to use the EMDR technique on her. It’s supposed to be especially effective with schizophrenics...”
“JJ,” Emily called out, walking towards her.
“They had to induce a coma, and we misjudged,” JJ turned to her wife. “The boyfriend, we thought he was a teenager. A peer. Well,” she bitterly chuckled. “He’s older. Much older.”
“How do you know?”
She held up the necklace to Emily with angry, trembling fingers. “Chelsea saw this around my neck. The look in her eyes was recognition.”
“The jewelry the unsub gave Bethany,” Emily noted, piecing together what JJ had found.
“Same one. He gave this to Roslyn, who gave it to me. God only knows how many other girls there’s been since then.” She shut her eyes and gritted her teeth, “I have been wearing this around my neck, his trophy, this whole time.”
Emily cautiously reached out to the blonde. “JJ, we will arrest him.”
JJ had just handcuffed Ethan Howard, their unsub, Roslyn’s older boyfriend and killer and brought him out of the interrogation room. A betrayed Bethany slapped Ethan across the face before being taken into custody as well. JJ, Emily, and Rossi watched as the young girl and unsub left. Emily laid a comforting hand on the small of JJ’s back, and the younger wife eventually relaxed in her touch.
“I know,” JJ nodded. “But when we do, I’m gonna need you to keep me away from him, because if I get a chance, I swear to God, I will kill him.”
“You good, JJ?” Rossi asked.
She nodded, “Yeah.”
“Come on, honey. Let’s go,” Emily softly said and the three walked away. As they were walking to the doors, the unit chief intertwined her fingers with JJ's to comfort her.
JJ and Emily came back home. Emily paid the babysitter and checked on the boys in their rooms. She gave each of them a forehead kiss and smoothed their hair down before going back to her and JJ’s room. JJ let out a heavy sigh and dropped her bag on their bedroom floor before lying down on the bed. Emily laid beside her and pulled her body close to hers. The blonde rested her head on her shoulder, and the older woman ran her fingers through her hair.
JJ took out the gold necklace and ran her thumb over the heart locket. She didn't know what else to do with the necklace. It was her sister's. It held so much meaning to her. So, she put it back inside her pocket and squeezed Emily's hand for reassurance.
“Emily-”
“Shh. Just get some rest, ok? We had a tough case. You did,” Emily whispered.
"I just-" JJ sat up and ran a hand through her hair. "I almost didn't save Bethany in time. She- she would've become… his next trophy. I couldn't save Roslyn then. Bethany could've ended up like her."
Emily sat up, too, and reached out to touch her wife's hands. "JJ, this is not your fault, ok? Don't put yourself down like this."
JJ nodded and sighed, “I’m sorry.” She slumped her shoulders and glanced down at their joined hands, playing with Emily's gentle fingers. "I just really miss her. Ros always gave up her time for me, helped me whenever I got hurt, and… I looked up to her a lot. I even wanted to play soccer because of her," she smiled fondly at the memory of her sister. “She even told me I was a badass."
Emily chuckled along with her, “Well, she’s right. You are a badass.” She kissed her lips and pulled back to look at her. "Roslyn would've been proud of what you did with the case. You did her justice and she would’ve been grateful for that."
JJ slowly nodded and bit her lip. Emily’s right. She did bring justice for her sister, and Roslyn would’ve thought it was badass. The blonde agent quietly chuckled to herself as she remembered Roslyn's words from before, "...he'll know not to mess with Jennifer Jareau. 'Cause she's a total badass.”
"Now, get some sleep. You need it," Emily's voice quietly broke through and JJ felt herself being pulled back down. She laid her head on Emily's shoulder and snuggled back into her body.
The next day, Emily was in her office, fixing a small black box for her wife. Earlier that noon, she had used the last 15 minutes of her lunch break to “run an errand” at the jewelry store, leaving a confused JJ behind because she usually ate with her. When Emily was done with her finishing touches, she went outside her office to see JJ at her desk, concentrating on her reports.
Emily let her wife fall asleep first. She thought about the necklace JJ had before they learned it was a painful and awful reminder of what happened with Roslyn before. She noticed JJ taking the necklace out at the police precinct and made a mental note to go to the jewelry store tomorrow.
“JJ, I need to see you for a moment,” Emily called out across the bullpen, using her stern unit chief voice.
“Ooh, looks like you’re in trouble, JJ,” Matt joked, looking up from his paperwork. JJ playfully rolled her eyes and shook her head before heading upstairs to see her wife.
The blonde profiler followed Emily into her office, closing the door behind her, “What’s up?”
The unit chief grabbed the box from her desk, “I got you something earlier while you were busy.”
JJ took the box from her and slowly opened it. She quietly gasped at the sight. It was a gold necklace, similar to the one Roslyn gave her, but there was a minor difference. The locket was not heart-shaped, but a different one.
“Blackbird,” JJ noticed and looked up at Emily.
The unit chief nodded and pointed at the locket, “Look what’s inside.” The blonde picked it up from the box and opened the locket, revealing two pictures: one of Henry and Michael on one side and the one of Roslyn and JJ on the other side. Emily had enlisted some of Penelope’s help with the photos to fit the locket size. Tears started to form in JJ’s eyes as she ran her thumbs along the pictures inside.
The older woman softly smiled, “I hope you like it.”
JJ nodded and smiled, “I do. I love it so much.” She kissed her and Emily grabbed the necklace from her hand. The blonde wife turned around, brushing her hair aside. Emily clasped the necklace closed when she put it around her neck.
JJ turned back around to face Emily and looked down to toy with her new necklace. She gave a tearful smile and kissed the brunette for a few seconds, resting her forehead against hers after, “Thank you, Emily.”
Emily smiled back, “For what?”
"For understanding. For being there when I needed you," the blonde answered, playing with the fabric on the shoulder of her wife’s work shirt.
"I will always be here for you, JJ. You know that," Emily kissed her forehead.
“I know. I love you.”
“I love you, too, JJ,” the older woman said and pulled her into a tight embrace.
JJ smiled and kissed her again, this time deepening it. She lightly pushed Emily against her desk and her hands blindly found her boss’s belt buckle, attempting to undo it.
“Babe, we have work to do. Those reports aren’t going to finish themselves,” Emily murmured and chuckled.
“Mm-mm, I want to properly thank you,” JJ said, kissing Emily’s jawline. “I’m determined to make you finish first.”
The brunette lightly laughed and pulled away, with JJ slightly frowning at the loss of contact. Emily kissed her cheek and offered to make a deal, “How about this? We get off work at around 5, so I’ll let you have your way with me then.”
JJ’s eyes lit up as she nodded. She kissed her one more time and hugged her again. JJ rested her head on Emily’s shoulder as her fingers played with the blackbird locket again.
The blackbird was very significant to JJ. Not only did it mean a code for danger to her, but it also meant courage and change. JJ thought about how she grew up the person she is today, but she couldn’t have done it without Roslyn in her younger years and Emily in her older years. Her sister helped her learn how to find herself when she was younger, and her wife built JJ to become the stronger version of herself later on. It’s no wonder why Emily chose a blackbird for the locket. It’s because that’s how the unit chief saw JJ: hopeful and brave.

America’s Sweetheart 5
hi there beautiful people !!
Read previous chapter here <-
The press finds out about Reader and Spencer’s relationship, and Reader opens up to Spencer. Cliffhanger at the end 👀
Angst + fluff !!
MASTERLIST
__
I had to turn my phone on silent.
Person after person was calling me, asking questions, giving their opinion. My face was splashed over every magazine, tabloid, and news article I could find.
Spencer had called me four times, never getting an answer.
YFN YLN has a new man!
YFN YLN has risen to fame in the last few years, but that’s not all she’s seemed to accomplish.
The american sweetheart has been spotted multiple times walking the streets of Washington DC with, not only a man, but a federal agent. After one of our sources found them at a coffee shop, the mystery man threatened to arrest our source and to leave YFN be.
We have identified the mystery man as none other than SSA Dr. Spencer Reid, a federal agent in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Not only is Reid a handsome fellow, he’s a smart cookie as well. With three PhDs and a couple of BAs tucked under his belt, the good doctor has chosen to settle down with our very own YFN YLN.
How did these lovebirds meet? Did the deaths of YFN’s parents affect the relationship? When will they be planning the wedding?
All questions to be answered. Tune in to our next weeks....
The pictures of Spencer and I were fine. We’re smiling, laughing. Nothing to suggest any gossip, drama, or otherwise.
But that’s what’s going to happen. People all around the world will be watching, analyzing, waiting for what happens next.
The knock at my door made me roll my eyes, the clever tune telling me it was Spencer. He must’ve come straight to my house after his case.
“YFN, I know you’re in there! We need to talk about this-” I opened the door, revealing my disheveled appearance. Spencer stopped, concern filling his eyes. “Can I come in?”
“Sure,” I said, quietly, letting him in the door. His old converse thudded against my wood floors, and I followed behind him at a safe distance.
“Okay, what’s wrong? The press would eventually figure it out, that’s what you always said,” Spencer said impatiently, spinning around to face me.
“I know! I’ve just never been in a relationship that’s so... public.” I crossed my arms over my chest, pushing past Spencer into my kitchen. “I’m just preparing for the blowback of rumors, gossip, drama. That’ll come too, you know.”
“So? What does that matter?” Spencer asked, pulling gently on my arm. I faced him again, and I could see his next question in his eyes. “You also haven’t told me about your parents...”
“You haven’t told me about your parents!” I shot back, my defenses coming up.
Spencer didn’t miss a beat. “My mom has schizophrenia and my dad left when I was eleven. Those are my parents. Now you need to tell me about yours. I want to hear it from you over a tabloid or a reporter.”
I sniffled, pulling away from Spencer gently. I sat over on the couch, and he didn’t hesitant to follow. Spencer sat next to me quietly, like if he makes no noise I won’t notice he’s still there.
“At the Academy awards a few years ago, I was nominated for best actress. It was my first nomination for anything, and I was still super young and fitting into the business. The newbie, you might say.” Spencer nodded, understanding.
“I didn’t win, and I didn’t expect to win so I wasn’t super sad about it. But my dad took my ‘loss’ as a personal vendetta. He was cursing at me quietly for the rest of the night. At the parties after the Oscars, my dad got really drunk and wandered into a busy street. My mom followed him, trying to get him out of harms way when...” I swallowed, silent tears streaming down my face.
“An eighteen wheeler going forty miles an hour hit both of them at two o’clock in the morning outside of a bar. The paparazzi were the first people on the scene, quickly figuring out the victims were the parents of a young Hollywood actress that lost the win at the Oscars. I found out about what happened from a reporter, who showed me pictures of the accident.”
Spencer was speechless. “YFN, I... that’s horrible...”
I gave a bitter laugh, looking over at him next to me. “My award winning role, the one that made my name... was a woman named Meg. She’s left on her own in the world, desperate to make something of herself. People asked me, ‘YFN, how did you act out that kind of pain?’ and I could never tell them that... while filming, it didn’t even feel like an act half the time. It was just me.”
Spencer didn’t say anything. Instead, he wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his chest. I breathed in the scent of him, smells of soap and new books. “Thank you for telling me,” he mumbled into my hair.
“If I had won that Oscar, my parents would still-”
Spencer pulled away, looking me in the eyes. “Do not ever feel guilty. There was no way of knowing how that night would end up. It is not your fault.”
I nodded, exhaustion overtaking me and tears falling quietly down my face. We’d been together for six months, and Spencer had never seen me cry before.
He just sat with me, rubbing my shoulders while I picked myself together. After a moment, he glanced towards my kitchen. “Do you have any ice cream?”
I gave a small chuckle, looking over into his coffee brown eyes. “Is that even a question?" __
Three weeks since my breakthrough with Spencer. Three weeks of running from paps, stealing kisses inside secluded coffee shops, and competitions of who can make the funnier faces in far off cameras. As if by a miracle, not one case tore Spencer away from me for three weeks.
Until that three weeks ended.
“When do you think you’ll be back?” I said, trotting up the front steps to my house. The phone balanced precariously between my cheek and shoulder, my hands full of audition scripts.
Washington DC nightlife twinkled in the street, making me smile. The world had gotten brighter since I had met Spencer.
“I’m not sure, this case is complicated,” Spencer huffed, sounding exhausted. “Four days, maybe? I’m sorry, we had plans for the dinner-”
“Spencer,” I interrupted. “Do not apologize for doing your job. I think I can survive for a few days on my own. Maybe I’ll even rehearse without you distracting me!”
I could hear Spencer’s smile through the phone. “It’ll be torture for you though. You love my distractions.”
“Goodnight, Spencer,” I said in a sing song voice, opening the front door to my house.
He chuckled. “Goodnight, YFN.”
The house was quiet when I walked in, too quiet. An eerie feeling settled on my shoulders. “Hello?” I called, feeling stupid. Even if there was someone there to murder me, what makes me think they would answer?
A thought of the notes crossed my mind. Those creepy photos of me on the street, torn up articles about Spencer, and a dozen roses to add a romantic touch.
But I hadn’t gotten a single creepy note in months, since before I met Spencer’s team. The creeper had probably moved on to another lucky girl.
As I threw my keys and scripts on the counter, I never even saw the arms circling tightly around my shoulders. Just the rancid smell of cigarettes and alcohol.

quarantine (c.h)
Request: Spending quarantine with your boyfriend Calum and finding out you’re pregnant. You’re nervous about being pregnant with what’s going on in the world, so he comforts you. Ultimate fluff. --------------------
“Good morning, baby,” Calum greets, pressing a gentle kiss against your forehead when he noticed that you were awake.
“Morning,” you murmur, trying to muster up a smile through the nausea that was settling back into your body, even though you’d just woken up.
“How are you feeling? Any better than last night?” He asks, pushing his computer to the side so that he could wrap you in his arms. You instinctively curl into him, humming at the contact.
“I still don’t feel great, but it’s definitely better,” you mumble, relaxing as he started drawing soothing circles in your skin.
“You’re sure you don’t want to go to the doctor,” the concern in his voice causes a lazy smile to form on your face.
“Now isn’t really the best time for a doctors appointment Cal,” you remind him. “I really don’t think it’s anything serious, I’m just not quite feeling a hundred percent. I’m sure it’ll pass in a few days.” ----------------------
Much to your dismay, it didn’t pass in a few days. You went through moments of feeling completely fine, and moments of rushing to the bathroom to throw up. You were completely baffled by the fact that it seemed that all you needed to do to feel better at times was allow yourself to get sick. Calum was a trooper through it. He was always holding your hair back when you were throwing up, or pushing meetings back so that he could cuddle with you in bed to help you relax.
“Yeah, I don’t understand what’s going on,” you sigh into the phone, filling your best friend in on what has been going on. “I feel like such a burden to Calum because he’s constantly taking care of me in some way.”
“Maybe you’re pregnant,” she responds nonchalantly, making the pot you were washing fall from your hands in shock.
“W-What,” you stutter, surprised by her suggestion. “I can’t be pregnant. There’s no way.” You laugh in disbelief, shaking your head at the idea.
“All I’m saying is that what you’re dealing with sounds a whole lot like morning sickness,” she explains matter-of-factly, and you imagine her shrugging her shoulders. “I know that you and Calum aren’t exactly the type to practice abstinence, so it could be a possibility right? Are you late?”
“No, at least I don’t think so,” you huff dismissively, gripping your phone in your hand as you make your way towards Calum’s bedroom to check the date on the Calendar. “It’s the fifteenth, right?”
“No.”
“What do you mean no? Oh my god,” you gasp, your free hand covering your mouth in shock at the realization that you were, in fact, late.
“What? What’s wrong,” she questions, unable to see what was going on.
“I’m late,” you whisper, trying to stay calm as your head spun at the thought that you might actually be pregnant. “Oh my god, what if I’m pregnant.”
“Listen, it’s probably fine. You guys have had scares like this before. I’m sure it’s nothing,” she dismisses calmly in an attempt to bring you some sort of comfort. “Do you have any tests at Calum’s apartment?”
“No, why would I have pregnancy tests lying around Calum’s apartment?” I whisper-shout, an overwhelming amount of stress hitting at once.
“Again, it’s probably nothing but you should probably invest in a few pregnancy tests, just in case.” she suggests, and you nod in agreement. “No matter what happens, I’m here supporting you, and I know that Calum will be too. Try not to worry about it too much, okay?” --------------------
You did worry about it. All you’d been able to do since that phone call was worry about the possibility of being pregnant. As soon as you got off the phone that day, you ordered multiple pregnancy tests from your local drug store online trying to keep from going into public in the midst of a pandemic.
Calum quickly caught on that there was something wrong, but you used the excuse that you still just weren’t feeling quite right. He wasn’t entirely convinced, but he decided not to push it because he didn’t want to upset you further.
A day after you ordered the tests a knock came at the door, tearing your attention from the weekly zoom call you and Calum had with the rest of the band.
“I’ll get it,” you murmur sweetly, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips before sauntering towards the door.
“Good afternoon, I’ve got a delivery for Y/l/n,” the mailman greets, looking down at the package in his hands.
“Thank you so much,” you smile, feeling your stomach drop at what was inside the package. You gingerly take the box from him, wishing him a nice rest of his day, before pulling the door shut. Knowing that you needed to get back to the call before the boys started asking questions, you hid the package in Calum’s bedroom before returning to the couch next to him.
“Who was it, Y/n,” Luke questions, shooting you a bright smile.
“Just the mailman,” you shrug, thankful that they didn’t ask anymore questions. You found yourself zone out throughout the call, unable to really focus on the conversations from that point on. After about ten minutes of listening to the boys talk, you excused yourself telling Calum that you weren’t feeling well again and wanted to lie down. The boys wished you well before you sauntered towards Calum’s room, wanting to get a test over with so that you’d know whether or not you needed to worry. ------------
You stare down at the pregnancy test in shock; unsure how to feel as two lines stare back at you tauntingly. Your jaw drops in disbelief and you choose to take two more tests, unsure of how reliable one tests results would be. Your uncertainty about the results diminishes as the other two support what the first test already told you.
“I-I’m pregnant,” you choke out, tears sliding down your cheeks. Realization settles in even deeper at the words that rolled off of your tongue.
“I’m pregnant,” you whisper, unable to move as panic settled in your chest. The current state of the world came to mind, seemingly paralyzing you at the thought of bringing a baby into the world in the middle of a pandemic. The bathroom seems to spin as irrational scenarios begin rolling through your mind; quiet sobs falling from your lips.
“Babe, are you okay?” Calum asks, softly knocking on the door before walking in at your lack of response. His eyes shoot open when they land on your shaking figure seated on the floor. He rushes to you with a concerned look on his face, dropping on the floor next to you. His movements halt when his eyes meet your own; tears falling from your eyes freely.
“Calum, I think I’m pregnant,” you sniffle, watching him carefully as his expression contorts into one of confusion.
“What,” he murmurs in shock, his eyes trailing to the pregnancy tests in your hands.”You’re pregnant?” His eyes meet yours again before falling back on the tests. He takes them into his hands, studying them, before an excited smile takes over his face.
“We’re having a baby?” his mumbles, tears filling his own eyes as his hand moves to cup your cheek, catching your tears with his thumb. “Babe, I can’t believe this. We’re having a baby!” His excitement matched that of a kid in a candy store as the realization settled in.
You want to smile at how precious he was being, and how he was handling the situation but you couldn’t breathe. Up to this point in the quarantine, you’ve been worried about getting the virus, but now you hold the responsibility of two people and that seems like too much.
“Hey,” he calls, pulling you away from your thoughts. His eyes searching yours for an understanding of what you’re thinking. “This is a good thing, right?”
Guilt began settling in your chest as the excitement in his eyes dissolved at your emotional reaction.
“Yeah, yeah it’s a good thing,” you nod shooting him a genuine smile, attempting to compose yourself.
“Then, what’s wrong?” He breathes, and you take a note to thank him later for being so patient with you.
“I’m really scared, Cal,” you admit, looking down at the pregnancy tests on the floor by your legs. “What if I get sick? I mean, we’re in the middle of a worldwide pandemic! What if the baby gets sick because of me?”
His face softens, a look of understanding crossing his face at your fear for the baby register in his mind. He pulls you into his arms, protectively tucking you in his embrace to help bring you a sense of comfort.
“Listen, I know this is scary and I can’t believe the amount of pressure that you’re probably feeling right now but it’s going to be okay,” he assures you, running his hands up and down your back soothingly. “We’re already quarantined to the apartment, we’re being smart. We’ll just take all of the necessary precautions to keep any of us from getting sick.”
“But what if-”
“Sh,” he shushes you, tilting your head up so that you would look at him. “What if’s are just going to drive you crazy. We’re going to be okay.”
“We’re going to be okay,” you repeat, allowing yourself to relax in his embrace. He gingerly presses a kiss against the crown of your head, before you notice a wide smile take over his face.
“We’re having a baby.” he murmurs into your hair, a few happy tears rolling down his cheeks. You smile at him endearingly, taking his face in your hands.
“We’re having a baby, Calum. You’re going to be a dad,” you gush, wiping his tears away as your own begin to fall. Calum looks down at you and pulls you in for passionate kiss.
“I love you so much. I promise to do everything I can to keep you guys safe,” he sniffles, his hands moving to caress your stomach. “I can’t believe we’re having a baby.”
You spent the rest of the night in awe of Calum and how gently he chose to handle you. He held you close to him all night. His hand constantly drawing comforting circles on your stomach as he murmured encouraging words in your ear and talked about how excited his family would be about the baby. You couldn’t help but fall deeper in love with him that night as he gushed about baby names and how exciting he was to start a family with you. ----------------------------------- So, I just realized that boyfriend Calum comforting you after finding out you’re pregnant in quarantine is a concept that I didn’t know I needed. I’m so soft for this, I hope you guys enjoyed it!

Coffee House Dreams
Luke Hemmings Imagine
Please let me know what you think❤️
Aurora sighed as she blew a golden blonde curl from her line of vision once again, her fingers lightly pressing against the piano keys while trying to find the right sound. The small coffee shoppe nestled in one of the side streets of London, where her sister worked tirelessly, bustled with life, the strong scent of espresso overwhelming her senses with every inhale.
She was here almost everyday since she couldn't afford a piano this nice at home, knew most of the customers by name, and she always enjoyed a classic, sweet, vanilla cappuccino after a long day at Uni.
Aurora was a simple girl who loved the sight of rain droplets on rose petals, the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore at night, and the scent of espresso as she played the piano. She loved the color red, especially her crimson colored scrunchie that currently tied her mess of golden curls up, and she found unkind people to be the scum of the earth.
She also found the mysterious blonde haired, blue eyed boy that hid his face being a pair of sunglasses and a steaming caramel latte to be the most beautiful creature she'd ever seen. He had started coming in just in the past week, but Aurora found his Australian accent positively enchanting and the dimples that appeared when he smiled made her slam her fingers down on the keys of the piano the first time she saw them, causing a loud crash of discord to sound through the small shoppe and for her to duck her blushing face when he whipped around confused.
He sat perched at the window seat across the way and Aurora noticed how he had a blueberry muffin as well today, his fingers picking at the treat as he watched the raindrops rolls down the clear glass beside him.
He looked sad today, Aurora noticed, the corner of his lips turned downwards and he anxiously fidgeted every few minutes, scratching his temple with his sweater paw.
Now, noticing she was staring like a crazy person, Aurora clears her throat, turning her attention back to the keys and the song she was trying to figure out.
Well the sky is finally open, the rain and wind stopped blowin'
But you're stuck out in the same old storm again
The notes just don't sound as perfect as she wanted and she tries again in another key.
You hold tight to your umbrella, well, darlin' I'm just tryin' to tell ya
That there's always been a rainbow hangin' over your head
She groans to herself, placing her head down on the polished wood, frustrated that she couldn't even get the cords right to her own song.
"That's a beautiful song. Have you tried it starting out in 'G' though?"
She gasps in shock, jumping backwards, her sheet music flying everywhere, and she nearly falls off the piano stool as she hears the accented voice of the mysterious boy who loved caramel lattes right beside her.
He looks mortified at her reaction, his bright blue eyes that were no longer covered by sunglasses were wide and his long arms were out like he was about to catch her before she hit the ground.
"Whoa! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you," he says but it's all muffled as Aurora stares up at him in shock and wonder.
This mysterious boy wasn't so mysterious after all. He was Luke freaking Hemmings from her old favorite band, 5 Seconds of Summer. She had been staring at Luke Hemmings like a certified freak for over a week now and didn't notice. She really needed to get more sleep.
"It's fine. Everything is fine. Just startled me is all. First, you're way over there and now, you're all the way over here. You must have some long legs on you," she mumbles frantically like a crazy person, picking up her sheet music and as she finishes her sentence, her eyes trail from his torso, down his long legs, and to his feet that were awkwardly doing this thing where they turned into one another. "I rest my case."
He laughs lightly at that and her eyebrows raise when he rests his latte cup on top of the piano as if he was staying awhile.
"Sorry, I tend to creep up on people without them noticing. I'm Luke, by the way," he reaches out his hand for her to shake and Aurora smiles at the sight of his red gel fingernails, her favorite color.
"Aurora... I love the red," she says, earning a brilliant beam from him with a hint of a blush. He mumbles a 'thank you' quietly, tucking a wild blonde curl behind his ear sheepishly.
"You come in here a lot. Do you live close by or something?" He asks, taking a sip of his hot drink as she assorts her music once more.
"Are you stalking me, Luke?" She smirks as he nearly chokes on his drink and starts to fumble over his words.
"N-No! No, I just hear you play every time I come in. It's quite nice and it's a small... it's a small shoppe. Oh, god... Please don't think I'm a psycho stalker," he winces behind his cup, knowing his previous words made him sound like a creep.
"I'm just kidding," she giggles with a mischievous grin, finding his nervousness to be quite funny. "It's a small and quiet coffee house. Not many new people come in, so you're a sight for sore eyes, for sure."
She furrows her brows as he doesn't really reply to her statement, looking back at the door as it chimes, lips bitten harshly by his front teeth. He looks disappointed as Andrew, the local dog walker who liked a double fudge hot cocoa after a long morning of trudging along behind a sweet saint bernard, two huskies that were brothers, Mrs. Henderson's prize winning poodle, and a teacup yorkie that had a bite of a lion, walked in.
"Waiting for someone?" She asked quietly, trying to be gentle as his face is crestfallen after checking the time.
"Uh.." he runs his hand through his curls, tugging at the roots anxiously for a moment before turning back to her. "My girlfriend. She... We've been fighting a lot recently, but she was supposed to meet me an hour ago to talk some stuff out."
Sierra Deaton, Luke's girlfriend, was a sweet girl from what Aurora observed from the tweets and Instagram posts, but every relationship had its downfalls.
"Maybe she's stuck in traffic. You know how London is," she once again tries to be gentle with his feelings and her heart aches just a bit when she sees his deep frown.
"Yeah... Maybe it's just London." He hides his upset eyes by a fake smile and Aurora finds it upsetting at just how good he seemed at that specific action; hiding his true feelings.
"Fuck," he suddenly curses, looking frantic for a second as he starts collecting all of his belongings.
"What's wrong?" Aurora asks, his nervousness making her anxiety spike.
"I'm late for rehearsal. Shit! I completely forgot," he shoves his phone in his pocket and shoots back the rest of his latte quickly. "It was so nice finally meeting you! Um, I'll probably see you tomorrow! Try starting the song out in G!" As quick as he stumbles out his words, he is out of the shoppe and Aurora watches in hazy confusion as he speed walks past the window, tugging at his hair nervously again.
"That boy is going to go bald one day if he keeps that up," she mumbles, turning back to her piano and feeling a bit confused and star struck by her encounter.
"What boy?" She hears her sister ask as she walks around the corner, taking Luke's empty mug from off the piano and placing it in the dirty dish tray she had rested on her hip.
"Just a boy, Cece," she smiles up at her older sister who looked disheveled after a long shift. "Damn, you look rough."
Celestia rolls her eyes playfully at her little sister, reaching up to maintain her jet black hair that was nothing like her sister's. You would have never have known that they were related if you had set your eyes on the curly blonde haired, green eyed, shy girl and the older, upbeat girl with obsidian hair and bright, blue eyes. "Want another cappuccino?" She asks, earning a grin and a nod from Aurora as she walks away.
Looking down at the ivory keys, Aurora hums to herself as she hovers her fingers over the 'G' key. Beginning to play the song, she can't help but grin and scribble down notes inside her tattered song journal. Maybe Luke knew what he was talking about after all.
________
The sun is dimly shining the next morning and Aurora inhales the smell of wet asphalt after the night full of rain, a small smile on her face. Turning the corner towards the coffee shoppe, she nearly stops in her tracks as she sees a familiar, teary-eyed boy through the window, sitting in his normal seat. He was alone, no coffee or muffin in sight and she watches as he buries his distraught face in his hands.
Trudging along slowly while taking looks back at the upset Luke through the window, Aurora frowns as she enters the shoppe and walks over to the counter. "Hey, Cece. I need a vanilla cappuccino, a caramel latte, and two blueberry muffins, please. Put extra caramel drizzle and whipped cream on the latte too."
She ignores her sister's confused smirk as she places the money on the counter, continuing to look over at Luke, who's shoulders were now lightly shaking with sobs. Her order is quick to arrive and she collects the cups and muffins carefully, making a beeline towards Luke's table.
"Hey, sunshine," she whispers solemnly, a gentle, comforting smile on her lips as he looks up with red rimmed eyes, a flushed nose and cheeks, and sniffles quietly.
"Hey," he croaks, wiping his eyes and looking embarrassed that she caught him in his weakest moments.
She slowly slides the muffin and caramel latte in front of him and when he looks up at her confused that she got his order right, she shrugs lightly. "Lucky guess," she says before taking the seat in front of him.
"I know we just met and aren't the best of friends, but I felt like you needed someone to talk to or else you wouldn't be sitting here in the middle of a public coffee house and crying, so... Here I am," she says, stuffing a large bite of blueberry muffin in her mouth and ignoring the crumbs that fall onto the table.
He doesn't say anything for a few moments, a dazed look in his eyes as he gazes out the window and stirs his spoon around and around the rim of his cup.
Aurora is patient, half of her cappuccino finished before he finally parts his lips to speak.
"She left me. She said she didn't want to deal with the distance when we go on tour again and that she didn't trust me to not h-hook up with other girls while I'm gone. I've never done anything but give her l-love and reasons t-to...to trust me! I would n-never cheat."
His words, heaving chest, and his trembling lip are enough to make Aurora wince in sympathy, nearly burning her tongue as he says it in the middle of her taking a larger gulp.
"I'm so sorry, Luke... I know she meant a lot to you or you wouldn't be having this reaction." He nods solemnly as her words before she continues. "If it's any consolation, she didn't deserve you after you kept trying to meet up and talk and she never showed. You tried. She didn't. Some people aren't worth your tears. I know that's not going to stop you from being upset, but it's a thought to think about."
His eyebrows furrow a bit at her words before he gives a small nod. "I guess you're right," he says, showing progress in his mood as he finally picks up his latte and takes a small sip.
It's quiet for a few more minutes and the second that Aurora sees his bottom lip start to tremble again, she panics and leans forward. "Hey," she reaches out and lightly touches his hand. "Want to get out of here? I've got this place I'd like to show you if you let me. It's a bit of a drive, but you won't regret it."
Looking down at his watch, he seems to weigh the pros and cons for a moment before giving in. "Why not?" He says, standing and throwing his jacket on as Aurora looks up, slightly dumbfounded that he accepted.
"Okay," she stands up and gets out an excited giggle, placing their cups in the bin. "Lets go"
With a wave to her sister, who was giving her a proud smirk, Luke puts on his sunglasses and they leave the coffee house, making their way to her car that was parked around the corner.
"Holy shit, this is amazing!" Luke laughs unbelievably at her cherry red 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible with cream colored interior.
"Thanks! It was my granddad's!" Climbing in, she cranks the car and with an excited grin and looking both ways, she pulls out into the traffic.
The wind blows through their hair as the cruise down the roads and Aurora gently smiles when she looks over and sees Luke grinning as he looks at the scenery and people around.
"Here," She hands him her phone as she enjoys the cool breeze, placing her sunnies over her eyes. "You choose the music."
"Brave choice," he hums, taking the phone and beginning to scroll through the songs until he gets to a certain category.
"I knew it!" He shouts with a crazed laugh, Aurora giving him an odd look as she worries for his health.
"You okay there, bub?" She asks with a slight chuckle before he shoves her phone in her face with a wide grin.
"Every one of our albums, including our old EP's, and features. I knew you were a fan!" He laughs as her face drops, a blush taking over her cheeks.
"I never said I wasn't," she sticks her tongue out at him before smirking at his dumbfounded face. "Play a song, doofus." She shoves him playfully as he continues to grin, his thumb scrolling through the songs.
English Love Affair starts playing through the speakers and Aurora rolls her eyes behind her sunglasses. "I see what you did there," she laughs as he smirks over at her cheekily, his sadness hidden well, but Aurora knew it was still under the surface.
________
Oh tie up your boat, take off your coat, and take a look around
Everything is alright now
The door to the coffee shoppe chimes cheerfully the following day, making Aurora look up in curiosity. A smile tugs at her lips as she sees the familiar, lanky, blonde boy walk in but her eyes slightly widen as three other beautiful boys follow behind him.
"Holy mother of God," she mumbles to herself wide eyed as she sees Luke turn towards the piano and give her a smile and wave, making a beeline towards her with the boys in tow.
Gulping, Aurora tries to hide her shaking hands by sitting on them, nervously grinning as they come closer.
"Hey, Ro! These are my friends, Michael, Ashton, and Calum. I told them about your song and they really wanted to hear it." Aurora almost fell over as a pleasant nickname passed through his lips but what really made her vision blurry was the end of his sentence.
"O-Oh, that's so... that's so sweet, Luke. It isn't finished yet though," she frowns, biting her lip as he seems to deflate.
"Oh, well maybe next time then," he says sadly and the look on his face is enough for her to grab his hand as he starts to turn.
"Wait! I-I can show the parts I do have," she says, making his smile appear once again.
The boys all crowd around her, making her feel extremely nervous but with Luke's encouraging smile, she places her still shaking hands over the keys.
When it rain it pours but you didn't even notice
It ain't rainin' anymore, it's hard to breathe when all we know is
The struggle of staying above, the rising water line
She continues the song, trying to his cracking, nervous voice, until she no longer has any lyrics, trailing off with a quiet hum and shaky exhale. "That's all I've got so far," she looks up to see the four boys grinning at her widely.
"She's perfect, Luke," Calum says over to Luke proudly and Ashton nearly jumps up and down.
"Such a smart breadstick, you!" Ashton pats him hard on the back as Michael continues to smile but stay the calm one.
"I don't understand," Aurora nervously picks at her bottom lip as they continue to talk excitedly amongst themselves. That's when she realizes her music journal that was testing on the piano is in Ashton's hand and they are all flickering through the pages with excited grins.
"Um, excuse me," her eyebrows are now furrowed as they read her personal songs and words from her heart and Luke looks up as they hear the edge in her tone.
"Sorry, Ro," He yanks the journal out of their hands and places it back on the piano with an apologetic wince. "I think we owe an explanation." When she nods annoyed, he gulps and continues. "We are in a band called 5 Seconds of Summer."
"I know this... Plus, there's only four of you," she deadpans as Ashton snickers in the back.
"Anyway! We are in a band and we are looking for an opening act and someone to sign, but we didn't want anyone to mainstream or famous. We think you'd be perfect to open for us."
Aurora stares up at them in shock, her mouth becoming dry.
“So... what do you say?” Luke asks, his cheeks turning slightly red.
What should she say?

Say you won’t let go
My first song fic, let’s see how this goes :)
(Or rather, a one shot based very loosely around a song that at this point might not even be a song fic)
Based off the song “Say you won’t let go” by James Arthur (obviously)
Cathy had met Anne on a cool autumn night, standing in the corner alone at some party Thomas had convinced her to attend. Long abandoned by the latter, she scrolled through her phone absentmindedly. People danced and drank around her, the sound of bad decisions in the making filling her ears.
She’d looked up from her phone, only to come face to face with a girl about her age. Glossy, chocolate brown hair fell past her shoulders to rest on her lower back. Piercing emerald eyes gazed at Cathy nervously, a tint of pink staining her cheeks as her hands scratched at the back of her neck nervously. She wore a dark grey jacket over a deep green crop top, as well as a pair of ripped skinny jeans.
Cathy took a moment to collect herself, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face.
“Hi,”
Cathy smiled at the girl awkwardly. The girl brightened slightly at that, flashing her a brilliant smile.
“Hey,” she greeted, “I couldn’t help but notice you were looking kinda lonely over here and I think you look really pretty and sorry I just kind of blurted that out for no reason but doyouwannadancewithme?”
Cathy blinked at her blankly, taking a moment to process her words. As soon as they fully sank in, she felt a bright blush creeping along her face. She had half a mind to refute the offer, to remind herself she already had a boyfriend. Yet what harm could one dance do? Besides, it wasn’t like it would really do anything, right?
“Yeah!” she answered finally, a dorky smile spreading across her face, “Yeah, I’d like that,”
The mysterious stranger led her onto the dance floor, an excited grin overtaking her face. They swayed to the music gently, and despite her previously unsavory mood, she couldn’t help the laugh that escaped her as the stranger twirled her around, singing along to the music joyfully.
“I didn’t catch your name?”
The stranger winked at her mischievously.
“Anne Boleyn, at your service,”
The music slowed, as did their dancing. Swaying to the music slowly, Anne rested her head on Cathy’s shoulder.
“And what about you, pretty-stranger-I-met-at-a-party?”
Cathy blushed at the description, her heart quickening.
“Parr. Catherine Parr, but everyone just calls me Cathy,” She answered.
“Cathy,” Anne’s lips twitched into a smile. “I like it, it’s a nice name,”
“Thanks, I got it for my birthday,” Cathy deadpanned. Anne laughed, the noise sounding like heaven to Cathy’s ears.
“Well Cathy,” Anne began playfully, “what’s a pretty lady like you doing in a shithole like this?”
“You flatter me,” Cathy answered blankly, despite the growing blush spreading across her face. Anne grinned at her response, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
“...Well?” Anne asked, curiosity seeping into her voice. Cathy laughed awkwardly, carefully avoiding Anne’s gaze.
“Well my boyfriend kind of dragged me here,” She answered. Anne’s smile dimmed slightly at that, although it was back at full force as soon as it was gone.
“Really? Who’s the lucky guy?” She inquired. Cathy cleared her throat uncomfortably, preparing for what was to come.
“Thomas. Thomas Seymour,”
She waited for the inevitable “Really?” or “You’re so lucky!” that always came whenever someone learnt of their relationship. It was getting annoying, really. She already had enough of her family telling her of how lucky she was to date a man like Thomas, she didn’t need to add more people to the mix.
Anne did none of those things. Instead, she wrinkled her nose in disgust. Not a good reaction, but having some variety was nice.
“Thomas? I know that guy, he’s kind of a dick,”
Cathy frowned.
“Hey, I know he can come off as unpleasant at times, but he’s really a good guy at heart,” Cathy countered. Anne grimaced doubtfully.
“No, really, I’m serious. I’m friends with his sister, he’s a real piece of work,”
Cathy rubbed her shoulder uncomfortably, stepping away from the Boleyn girl apprehensively.
“Yeah, well, I should probably go find him anyways. It’s getting late, so...”
Not waiting for an answer, she took off. She heard Anne yell something behind her, but she ignored it, choosing to weave her way through the crowd instead. What did she care what some stranger thought of her relationship, it’s not like it mattered anyways. It’s not like the fact that Thomas never told her he had a sister bothered her, everyone has their secrets.
“Tom? Thomas?” she called, ignoring the growing feeling of dread in her chest. Walking over past the kitchen, she finally found what she was looking for. Well, sort of.
Thomas sat on the worn couch, chatting excitedly with a girl Cathy recognized as her old friend Bethany. His hand rested on her waist, pulling her close to him as he pecked her lips, prompting a laugh from the latter. He cupped her cheeks gently, pulling her in for another kiss.
Cathy felt cold, a numb feeling overcoming her.
“Thomas?” Her voice sounded distant to her ears, as if spoken by another person. He didn’t respond, Cathy felt as if she couldn’t breath. She ran from the room, she needed to get away from here. From everything. her feet carried her blindly, sweat gathering on her brow as an ill feeling settled in her stomach.
Coming to a stop, she looked around to see where her feet had carried her.
She appeared to be in some kind on park, littered with all kinds of trees. Stars twinkled in the night sky, illuminating the empty park. Leaning against a tree, she lurched forwards to throw up, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.
Retching heavily, she jumped as felt a hand pull her hair out of her face. Anne Boleyn gazed at her, worry evident in her eyes.
“You alright mate?” she asked sympathetically. Cathy wanted to say yes, to tell her to go away and leave her alone. She wanted to pretend she was fine, to go back over to the party and fall into Thomas’ arms.
Oh god, Thomas....
She gagged, spewing the contents of her stomach violently. She felt Anne rubbing circles in her back, whispering quiet reassurances in her ear. Feeling her nausea subside slightly, she fell limp in Anne’s arms.
“What happened?” she asked gently. Cathy paused spitting some leftover bile from her mouth.
“You were right about Thomas, he... he...!”
Cathy couldn’t finish. It was as if saying the words would make them come true, she’d be forced to accept what had transpired before her very eyes. Anne pulled the taller girl into a tight hug, wiping her tears away gently with her thumb.
“Hey, it’s okay,” she whispered softly. Cathy sniffled quietly, hiding her face in the crook of Anne’s neck.
“I don’t know why you’re even putting up with my shit anyways,” she choked out, wiping her nose on her sleeve. “You barely know me, why’re you even helping?”
Anne frowned at her, pulling her close.
“Hey, none of that, okay? Even if I don’t know you that well, I can’t just let you go through this alone”
“Besides,” her face blushed a bright red and she looked down at her feet “I kind of know you. You have Miss Greene for linguistics, right?”
Cathy looked up at Anne in surprise.
“Yeah, how-”
“We’re in the same class. You’re the girl in the blue hoodie that always has a coffee with her,”
Cathy nodded slowly, taking a moment to process the information. Rubbing the wetness out of her eyes, she looked Anne over once more, attempting to match the Boleyn girl to her memory.
“Sorry I didn’t recognize you,” she mumbled numbly. Anne waved her hand dismissively, shrugging her apology off.
“It’s fine, you look in a world of your own most days and we’ve never talked. I wouldn’t expect you to recognize me anyways,”
Cathy nodded in understanding.
“Wait...” she began slowly, “If that’s the case, then how come you recognize me?”
Anne blushed, carefully avoiding Cathy’s gaze.
“No particular reason. You mentioned Thomas earlier, right? What happened?”
Cathy hesitated, looking away from Anne.
“Nothing important, I’m sure I just need to talk to him,”
Anne eyed her doubtfully, and Cathy felt a twinge of anger. She just had to talk to him, she was sure there was something to the story she was missing. There had to be.
Look, I’m going back to talk to him, whether you like it or not. You can stay here if you want, but I’m going,”
Turning away from Anne, she startled as she felt a firm hand on her shoulder. Emerald eyes gazed at her (albeit worriedly), grim determination set into her face.
“No, I’ll come,”
The night was windy, Cathy realized as she drew her arms around her with a shudder. Dead leaves fluttered through the air around her, crinkling and breaking in the cool autumn breeze. The yellow glow of the street lamps illuminated the empty street, flickering and flashing in the night. It was really quite beautiful, Cathy noted. There was something otherworldly about it, how the gentle breeze swayed the leaves in the trees, the little group’s footsteps echoing on the pavement.
She knew they’d reached the house before even laying eyes on it. Music blared through the windows, the reek of alcohol and sweat tainting the air even as they stood in the driveway. Ignoring the worried glance Anne sent her way, she pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Cathy had no trouble locating Thomas, something which came both as a disappointment and a relief. Said relief was rapidly quelled as her eyes locked onto Thomas. The situation hadn’t de-escalated, rather, it appeared far worse than before.
“Cathy? Did you- oh,” Anne faced shifted into a scowl as she took in the scene before her. She glowered at Thomas, muttering curses under her breath as Cathy felt tears gather in her eyes. She didn’t know why she thought it would have changed. She didn’t know why she thought it would have been different.
“-athy? Cathy?” Anne’s voice jolted her from her reverie. Her voice was laced with concern, although her eyes held nothing but contempt for the man before her. Taking in Cathy’s dazed expression, Anne shrugged her jacket off, placing it gingerly around Cathy’s shoulders.
“Here, keep an eye on this for me, will you? I’ll handle good ‘ol shithead over there,”
Cathy nodded numbly, pale knuckles gripping the jacket tightly. Sending one last glance towards Cathy, Anne set off towards Thomas, grim determination set into her face.
Meeting eyes with the Boleyn girl, her gave smiled at her charmingly. Resisting the urge to gag, Anne answered his smile with a sickly sweet smile of her own. Gesturing to Bethany, still in his arms, she spoke.
“Hey, don’t you have a girlfriend?”
“That ol’ gal? She doesn’t have to know,” he winked.
“Really now?” Anne hissed through grit teeth, “You really are exactly how Jane described you and more,”
“Jane?” he asked, looking around the room. It was then, it appeared, that he finally noticed the frozen Parr at the entrance. Jumping up, he shoved Bethany off of him unceremoniously.
“Cathy!” he yelped. Cathy fixed him with an icy glare.
“That’s “Catherine” to you Thomas,” she hissed. Stumbling towards her, Thomas froze as Anne stepped before Cathy protectively.
“I wouldn’t suggest coming any closer unless you wanna learn just how much damage these heels can do,” she threatened. Thomas paled, tripping over himself as he hurried to get away from the seething Boleyn girl. The rev of a car engine outside informed the two of his departure.
Turning to Cathy, Anne regarded her carefully.
“You alright mate? That can’t have been easy”
Cathy shrugged nonchalantly. Truth be told, she didn’t know. She felt angry and heartbroken, relieved and confused. Anne frowned, rubbing her neck in thought. Suddenly, a smile spread across her lips.
“Well then, I think I might have something to cheer you up,”
Extending an arm to Cathy, she offered the girl a dorky grin.
“We never did finish our dance, did we?”
--------------------------------------------------
Anne awoke slowly, squinting in the harsh sunlight. Looking around, she smiled as her eyes landed on the slumbering Cathy beside her. She snored lightly, hugging a pillow tightly to her chest. Most days, Cathy would be up an awake at the crack of dawn, making breakfast and getting ready for the day. Today, however, proved different. A nasty bout of the flu had ravaged the house for a week, and Cathy proved to be it’s biggest victim. Even as she made a speedy recovery, her energy remained quite low, as proven by her slumbering figure.
Anne smiled as the door creaked open, two little figures padding into the room quietly. A freckled face peeked over the bed as Elizabeth Boleyn-Parr looked over to her mom with wide eyes.
“Hi mama,” she whispered, swinging her little body onto the bed and crawling into Anne’s arms. A little whine came from the side of the bed, a mess of black curls peeping over the bedside. Holding Liz with one arm, Anne lifted Mae off the ground onto her lap. Mae crawled over to Cathy, poking her cheek with a grubby finger.
“Mommy?” she asked curiously. Planting a kiss to her forehead, Anne smiled at her gently.
“Use your words baby,” she encouraged. Mae looked over to Cathy once more, placing a little hand on her cheek.
“I want mommy,” she whispered. Anne smiled proudly, gently prying Mae’s hands away from the sleeping Parr.
“Mommy’s sleeping right now, but she’ll be awake later,”
Mae pouted, shaking Cathy’s shoulders sadly. Crawling over to her sister, Liz grabbed her hands and pulled them away from their mom.
“Mae, stop! Mommy needs to sleep!” She whispered urgently. Mae whined, sticking her thumb in her mouth angerly. Faced with the upset toddler, Anne pulled both girls into her lap.
“Well Mae, don’t you wanna help Lizzie get ready for school?”
Mae looked from Cathy to Liz before nodding slowly, resting her head in the crook of Anne’s neck. Standing, Anne was careful not to disturb her sleeping partner as she rested Mae on her hip. Holding Liz’s hand, the group made their way out the room towards the kitchen.
“Do you think you could get dressed on your own today?” Anne inquired. Liz grinned toothily, shooting her a thumbs up.
“Yeah!” she cheered, running back up the stairs to her room. Watching her stumble up the stairs, Anne turned to the toddler in her arms with a smile.
“Well then, how about some breakfast?” she asked sweetly, bopping Mae’s nose. Mae giggled at the motion, nodding enthusiastically with a clap of her hands. Coming into the kitchen, she placed Mae on her high chair. Flipping through the cookbook Catalina had gifted the family the previous year, her lips twitched into a smile as her eyes landed on a blueberry pancake recipe.
“Hey, how would you feel about some pancakes?” she questioned. Mae kicked her feet happily, throwing her hands in the air.
“Panckies!” she cheered. Anne chuckled, grabbing the flour from the cupboard.
“Panckies it is,”
Anne set to work making breakfast, chatting amicably with the happy toddler. Yawning, Liz padded down the stairs. She wore a a grey hoodie, along with a purple skirt and blue leggings. Sticking a blue journal in her sparkly green backpack, she trotted up to Anne.
“Mama? Where’s my lunch?”
“It’s the brown bag in the fridge,” Anne gestured to the item in question, dropping a dollop of batter on the pan. Liz stuffed the bag in her pack, sneaking a fudge cookie into her lunch. Grabbing a pancake for Mae and Liz each, Anne grabbed a small stack for herself and sat down with the kids. Cutting up their pancakes, Anne handed both girls their breakfast.
“Mama, I want syrup,” Mae protested, pushing her plate back at Anne. Anne sighed, ruffling her daughter’s hair.
“Sorry love, mama forgot to pick any up when we went shopping,” she smiled sheepishly, “But I promise we’ll pick some up on the way to school,”
Mae considered it before nodding, shoving bits of pancake in her mouth. The group ate in a comfortable silence, punctuated by the occasional scrape of cutlery or drop of a fork. Anne wiped the girl’s mouths with a napkin, grabbing the plates and placing them in the dishwasher. Patting Liz’s head, Anne picked Mae off of her chair.
“Could you wait at the door while me and Mae get ready?”
Liz nodded, running off to find her shoes.
Heading up to her room, Anne slipped out of her pajamas and into a green button up shirt and jeans. Dressing Mae to be much more of a challenge, seeing as the child in question wriggled about and refused to sit still. Finally, Anne headed downstairs, a dress clad Mae in her arms. Slipping into her shoes, Anne sent Liz an apologetic smile.
“Sorry for the wait Liz, Mae was feeling a little fidgety,”
Buckling Mae and Liz into their respective seats, Anne pulled her phone out to send Cathy a quick message.
-----------
8:16 AM
You: Hey Cath, I’m out dropping Liz off at school and Mae at Jane’s place, so it’s just you at home for now. Remember to take it easy, you still need to rest. In case you do wake up in time to read this message, breakfast’s in the kitchen. Love you <3
-----------
Slipping into the driver’s seat, Anne pulled out of the driveway as the group made it’s way to the school. Ten minutes and many yelled out songs later found Anne parked in front of the school, waving Liz goodbye.
“Bye Lizzie, love you! Say hi to Mary for me!” she called. Mae peeked over the window, waving enthusiastically.
“Bye bye!” she yelled. Liz waved back at the car before running off to the play structure.
Next stop was Jane’s house, where Mae would be having a playdate with Ed, Jane’s son. They got there relatively quickly, Anne noted as she stood at the doorway, resting Mae against her hip. The door opened at her knock, revealing Jane Seymour, her son Ed at her heels. Light blonde hair rested on her head in a messy bun, kind grey eyes greeting Anne warmly. Her figure was short and plump, a sharp contrast to her brother’s tall and muscular build. She was, as Anne liked to say, “friend-shaped”.
Like his mother, Ed’s hair was light blond, although it was rather thick and puffy. He was a petite figure, although his small size was easily made up for by his large personality. With a temper that rivaled Jane’s and the caring nature to match, he was almost like a miniature version of his mother.
Jane greeted Anne with a hug, placing a quick kiss to the top of Mae’s head.
“Hello girls!” she beamed warmly, “Right on time, the little one here was getting antsy,”
Anne chuckled at that, easily imagining the little boy running around impatiently, waiting for his friend.
“Well I’m on time,” she snarked.
“For once,” Jane muttered under her breath. Anne gasped, clutching a hand to her chest dramatically.
“Me? Late? Never!”
Both children giggled at her theatrics. Wriggling in Anne’s arms, Mae reached a grabby hand towards Jane.
“Mama, lemme go! I wanna play!”
Anne laughed, placing a kiss to Mae’s cheek and setting her on the ground. Mae gave Jane a quick hug before running off with Ed. Watching them go, Jane sighed.
“Well I’d better go make sure no one dies. Tell Cathy I said hi, ‘k?”
“Sure. Love ya!” Anne called, making her way back to the car.
--------------------------------
The house was silent when Anne returned, a sure sign that Cathy was still asleep. Grabbing a plate of pancakes and some coffee, Anne made her way over to find Cathy. Walking into their room, Anne couldn’t help the smile that made it’s way onto her lips as she regarded her slumbering wife.
Gentle sunlight illuminated her peaceful face, highlighting every groove and indent in her gingerbread brown face. Wild curls framed her face, sticking out in every direction; a testament to her tossing and turning the night before as her fever stricken body struggled to rest.
Pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, Anne tucked a strand of hair behind her partner’s ear.
“Hey love, it’s time to wake up,” she whispered. Cathy’s face scrunched up slightly as her eyes fluttered open.
“Morning beautiful,” Anne soothed. Cathy yawned, propping herself up on her elbows.
“Morning,” she murmured, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Looking around at the assortment before her, she raised an eyebrow.
“Breakfast in bed? What’s the special occasion?” she teased.
“You’re sick! Besides, am I not allowed to do something nice for my beautiful wife?” Anne exclaimed. Reaching out for her breakfast, Cathy gave Anne a grateful smile.
“Well, your beautiful wife appreciates it,” Cathy smiled, bumping her head against Anne’s shoulder playfully. Shifting so that she was sitting next to Cathy, Anne wrapped her arm around the former, resting her head on her shoulder.
“How are you feeling?” Anne inquired. Cathy shrugged, swallowing the bit of pancake in her mouth.
“Honestly? Still pretty shit,”
Anne frowned, placing her hand on Cathy’s forehead.
“You’re fever’s gone down, you probably just need to rest,” she offered. Cathy nodded wordlessly, laying her head Anne’s chest. Her breathing evened out in a manner of seconds, fork falling onto the bed with a dull Thump.
Carefully, Anne grabbed the plate and mug and placed them on the bedside table. Slowly, she maneuvered their bodies so that they were laying down on the bed, Cathy’s head resting in the crook of her neck.
Listening to the rhythmic sound of Cathy’s breathing, Anne felt her own eyelids grow heavy. She knew she had to go pick Liz and Mae up in a manner of hours, but for now, she’d simply rest her eyes for a moment. She felt Cathy shift slightly, wrapping her arms around Anne’s midsection tightly. The sunlight felt warm on her face, Anne noted as she pulled her blanket up around the two.
The house was quiet. Distantly, Anne heard birds chirping and dogs barking. She could imagine Liz, chatting with her friends excitedly about some tidbit of information they’d found fascinating. She could imagine Mae, building a tower with Ed, only to knock it down with a laugh, Jane fixing lunch behind them as she gazed at the children lovingly. Cathy lay in her arms, snoring lightly as she mumbled something or other in her sleep. It was perfect.
She held her lover in her arms, and all Anne could think about was how much she loved this woman. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with her, to raise their children together and grow old together. And even after all these years, Anne couldn’t believe Cathy felt the same. She’d felt the same, as they sat in the park and said “I love you” for the first time. As they got married, as they adopted children, Cathy had been with her the whole time. It was peaceful, it was quiet, Anne remarked as she held Cathy close. Cathy had met Anne on a cool autumn night, standing in the corner alone at some party Thomas had convinced her to attend. And ever since then, it had been perfect.

Triple Threat And The Fantabulous Redemption of One Carrie Wilson - Ch 1
Carrie woke up on a Monday to her phone’s alarm blaring in her ear and shut it off quickly, running to her bathroom to brush her teeth and get ready for the day. She cleaned up and did her hair and make up to its usual perfection, going to her closet to get dressed for school. She usually wouldn’t be so excited for school, and especially not on a Monday, and it wasn’t really a “special” school day, but she was still excited. Excited to officially execute her redemption. She was going to fix everything today. Well, she was going to try to. She was going to try to fix most of it. She had a lot to fix and a lot to do:
Step 1: Apologize to Julie and Flynn for The Hell Year the three of them just had. Because they both deserved a major apology from her. They both deserved better from her.
Step 2: Apologize to Nick and hope for the best case scenario: Being just friends, because being Nick’s friend was better than him hating her, better than being nothing to him. But she was going to be better to him. He deserved better, too.
Step 3: Apologize to the Dirty Candy girls for being so snappy to them at every rehearsal. They were good, really good, and Carrie was determined to be better about praising them when they got the choreography they’d been struggling with down. Lord knows those girls deserved all the praise in the world for dealing with Carrie’s constant pestering them about... Everything all the time.
Step 4: Figure out what was making her dad act so weird recently, and fix whatever was bothering him. She couldn’t stand the bad-weird way her dad had been acting anymore. She was going to fix it herself, if she could.
Step 5: Be a better person and stay that way. She couldn’t go back to the way it was before. Everything felt so hard, felt almost impossible back then. She had to make a change. She had to be better.
She smiled as she settled on a pink t shirt with shiny gold stars on the front, a matching pink skirt, and a pair of gold strappy heels, matching the stars. She admired her outfit in the mirror for a minute before walking downstairs, finding her dad in the kitchen.
“Morning.“ She said and sat down to eat the eggs, sunny side up just the way she liked them, and buttered toast, only slightly burnt, already waiting for her.
“Morning, baby.“ Trevor mumbled as he poked at his eggs halfheartedly, making Carrie frown as she nibbled into her toast.
“Are you ever going to tell me what’s been bothering you since The Orpheum, daddy?“ She asked and he spluttered and looked up, shaking his head.
“What? Nothing. I’m fine, baby.“ He told her quickly and gave her a little smile, finally taking a bite of his eggs.
Carrie sighed silently at that and looked down, knowing it was a lie but not yet knowing what to do about it. She kept eating in silence, finishing relatively quickly and getting up to leave. “I’ll see you after school, dad.”
“Have a good day, baby.” He said quietly and she smiled and nodded, waving at him before walking out and heading to school.
When she arrived, she walked in with a determined fire in her eyes and caught sight of Kayla waiting at their lockers, walking toward her quickly with a smile. “Hey, Purple!“ She greeted cheerfully, using the cute color nicknames the Dirty Candy girls loved to use for each other.
“Hey, Pink. You’re looking cute, as always.“ Kayla grinned, holding her purse over her shoulder.
“Thanks. You look good, too. I like those shoes.“ Carrie smiled and opened her locker, pulling out the text book and notes for her first class of the day.
“Oh, thanks!“ Kayla looked down, posing in her new favorite black ballet flats with little lavender bows. “And they’re so comfy, too!“
“Ooh, cute and comfy! The best combination.“ Carrie giggled, making Kayla laugh and nod as they headed to class. “So did you do anything fun this weekend?“
“Oh, not much. Dad got a canoe. Dunno what he’s doing with it, but he’s got it. Mom’s on this new exercise tape kick. I found a stray cat in my front yard. The usual. What about you? Anything interesting happen to my girl?” Kayla asked and Carrie perked up and nodded.
“Yeah, my dad made me come with him to see Julie’s hologram band at The Orpheum and he’s been acting really weird ever since. He’s actually been acting kind of weird since before then now that I think about it. I don’t know what’s going on with him-” Carrie stopped in her tracks as she caught Julie and Flynn excitedly chatting at their lockers out of the corner of her eye. Biting her lip, she looked back at Kayla, tucking a perfectly coiled curl behind her ear.
“Hey, I’ll be right back. Just gimme a minute, ok?“ She told her friend and walked away when she nodded, heading toward Julie and Flynn. She stiffened as they stopped and glanced at Carrie oddly, giving each other a look of confusion. “Julie, Flynn, can I talk to you girls for a minute?“ She asked them, her voice soft and nervous. She clutched her purse in her hands as Julie looked at a skeptical Flynn, then looked at Carrie and nodded slowly.
“Sure, Carrie.“ Julie said softly, tilting her head. She bit her lip, hoping she was wrong about what Julie and Flynn were thinking right now. It was all she could do to hope this would end well and not go up in flames in front of her.
“I just wanted to say that-“ She stopped and frowned guiltily as Flynn crossed her arms, letting out a sigh. “Just that I’m so sorry about the way I’ve been treating you, both of you, for the past year.“ She told them. “I was really mean to both of you and I shouldn’t have been. I should’ve realized that you were just hurting.“ Carrie said and looked up from the floor, seeing the shocked look on both of their faces. “I should’ve realized that you didn’t deserve that. I should’ve realized that you needed a friend. I’m so sorry I wasn’t that friend for you, Julie.“
“Carr-“ Carrie shook her head slightly, holding her hand up. She needed to get this out now, before she started to cry too much. She hated crying, especially in front of people.
“Julie, let me finish. Please.“ She added the ‘please‘ softly after a second, waiting until Julie nodded to keep going. “I know that it’s no real excuse to hurt you, but I was hurting, too. You weren’t talking to me anymore. You just wanted to be around Flynn all the time.” She glanced at Flynn for a second, trying to choose her words carefully.
“Nick seemed close to breaking up with me again. And then you started to sing again. You sang after the spirit rally, sang at Eats&Beats, and everyone loved you and your band. And I... Panicked. I felt like, after you stopped singing and playing anything for a year, you only sang again to spite me. To hurt me. To take my fans away from me.“ She admitted shamefully, frowning at the guilt-ridden look on Julie’s face.
“And Nick was upset with me for what I said to you after you sang at school. He said that you were really good, and that just made me panic more. I was scared that Nick might break up with me just so he could be with you.“ Carrie told her, tilting her head at the increasing guilt on Julie’s face. “Julie?“ She asked in an unsure voice, wanting to know what was going on in Julie’s head.
“Nick... Nick did ask me out once, but I said no, because I like someone else.“ She said, surprising Carrie. What? She of all people, had rejected Nick?
“I thought... Everyone thought you had a crush on Nick forever?“ She asked in confusion, furrowing her eyebrows.
“I did. Until I met my-“ Julie blushed, lowering her gaze to the floor shyly at what she was about to admit to her ex friend. “My guitarist. I didn’t want to lead Nick on if I wasn’t a hundred percent into him and liked someone else. I didn’t want to hurt him like that.“ She admitted, making Carrie let out a scandalized gasp and widen her eyes.
“Oh, no way! I knew I saw something there!“ She said with a grin, pointing at Julie. Julie groaned softly, hiding her face in her hands. “I mean, everyone can see the chemistry you have with him.” She pointed out, making Julie blush more and Flynn snort in amusement. She let out a little giggle, but quickly turned serious again, her smile dropping.
“So, then after the dance, Nick broke up with me and... It hurt. A lot. It felt like my entire world was turning upside down and inside out. Like I was losing everything. My two best friends. My boyfriend. My fans.“ Julie nodded quickly in understanding, placing a comforting hand on Carrie’s shoulder when her voice started to crack and she looked like she was about to cry. “It was so hard.“ She sniffled, blinking tears away.
“Look. We both messed up, Carrie. You messed up when you started to be mean, and I messed up when I started to be mean back to you. We both did and said things we shouldn’t have done.“ Julie pointed out, giving her a little smile. “I’m sorry that I ever made you feel like I was just trying to hurt you. You have to know that nothing I did was ever just to hurt you.“ She promised and Carrie gave her a little smile.
Carrie smiled and nodded, wiping away a tear. “I understand that now, Julie. I understand that you were just struggling. And I’m happy that your band of boys brought music back to you after everything that happened.“ She said, placing her hand over Julie’s on her shoulder and giving a squeeze. “You deserve music coming back to you after all of it.” She said before turning to Flynn. “Flynn, I know you took the way I treated you really hard.” She said, biting her lip when Flynn frowned and looked down.
“I said a lot of things about you that I shouldn’t have, Carrie. A lot of things that I really regret now. I’m sorry I called you a demon. Among other things.” Flynn shook her head, taking a step toward Carrie. “But- That’s all in the past now right? Nothing we can do about that but say our apologies and move on.“ She said with a shrug. “Just. I’m sorry, Carrie. Can we forget all of that and be friends again?“ She asked softly.
Carrie smiled and wrapped her arms around Flynn and Julie in a group hug, squeezing them tightly. “Absolutely, girls.“ She almost whispered, her eyes sparkling with new, now happy tears. She giggled as Julie and Flynn smiled and hugged her back just as tightly, pulling back to do the secret handshake they made up when they were younger and somehow still remembered now. She grinned as they finished it with a shout of “Triple Threat!”, looking at both of her best friends before opening her mouth to talk again.
“I watched you perform at The Orpheum, Julie. You were really good. Your band was really good. And your dress was cute, too.“ Carrie praised her, chuckling at the shocked look on her face.
“You were there, Carrie?“ Julie asked with wide eyes and Carrie nodded at the question with a shrug.
“My dad decided that he wanted both of us to go see you perform after he watched the video of you singing at your house. I don’t know why, but since then, he’s been acting so bizarre.“ She shook her head with a roll of her eyes, giggling again. “Dads, am I right?“
Julie and Flynn shared what seemed like a concerned look, recovering quickly and giggling with Carrie. “Yeah, dads are so weird sometimes.“ Julie said quickly. “Wait, you know I had a gig at my house?“ She asked when she realized what Carrie just said and what she implied before, making her stiffen.
“Oh. Right. I, um, might have crashed your house gig, Julie. And watched the video again afterward. I kinda just told myself you forgot to invite me to it.“ She admitted, making Julie smile. “You were really good then, too. I really liked that song. What is it called?“ She asked, leaning her head on Julie’s shoulder.
“I-it’s called Edge Of Great. I wrote that one with Luke. My guitarist.“ Julie clarified when Carrie gave a look to ask who “Luke“ was. Carrie quirked an eyebrow, crossing her arms.
“Oh, you and that guitar boy. You two are pretty cute together.“ She gave her a smirk, making her blush again. “So are you two official or is it just a crush, still?“ She asked curiously, genuinely wanting to know. She liked knowing about her friends love lives so if someone got hurt, she could pummel whoever hurt them to a pulp.
“Oh, um. No, we’re friends. Dating him would, um, complicate things a lot.“ Julie said with a shake of her head and a sigh.
“Oh. What a shame. You clearly like him if you turned Nick down because of him. And he seems to really, really like you. I mean, for the first minute or so of Edge Of Great when you wouldn’t look at him, the poor boy looked so sad.“ Carrie said, imitating what Luke looked like, gazing longingly at Julie. “Until you smiled at him. Then he was really pleased to have your attention.” Julie blushed again at the memory, her head snapping up when Flynn started talking.
“Ohh, you should hear the way she talks about her Luke when she gets really into it. ‘Oh, his voice, Flynn. Oh, his eyes. Oh, his lyrics. Oh, his perfect smile.’ It’s so cute.” Flynn laughed. “She even told me she once called Nick Luke on accident.” Julie’s eyes widened as she heard that, elbowing Flynn’s side.
Carrie snickered at that, hiding it behind her hand. “Well, I hope one day, you two can find a way to be together. Nick was so jealous of him, by the way.“ She said, remembering the way Nick watched Luke and Julie together and imitating his worried look.
“Oh, God. I still remember the day he tried to ask Julie out. He started by asking her for a selfie.“ Flynn snickered, laughing with Julie. “He asked for a selfie, then he asked to be study partners, and then he asked her on a date!“ Carrie scoffed and laughed into Julie’s shoulder, shaking her head fondly at her ex-boyfriend.
“Of course he did. He was always just a little awkward when we were together, too. I always thought it was kind of cute.“ She said, pulling away from them slowly. “Well, I have to get to class. Is it cool if I come over after school, Julie?“ She asked grinning when she nodded quickly. “Great! See you there, Flynn?“
“You know it, girl!“ Flynn confirmed, waving when Carrie waved and walked away, back to Kayla to get to class together.
Step one, accomplished. She thought with a smile, checking it off her mental list of things she needed to do.
“Back. Did I miss anything while I made up with the other two thirds of Triple Threat?“ She asked as she walked with her, contently listening to Kayla babble about the latest school gossip she heard.
“Oh, did you, girl. I just got a text from Aqua that she overheard from someone that the girl on the lacrosse team and a girl in the marching band are together!“ Kayla said excitedly but stayed quiet, talking with her hands while she explained just how long they’d been together.
“Oh, those two were secretly dating the whole time? And they’re ready to be out now?“ She asked as they walked through the door to class and sat down next to each other.
“Yes! Apparently. They didn’t wanna deal with hallway whispers and staring, so they kept it secret for as long as they could.“
“You know, that explains so much about those two.“ She said before they both turned their attention to the front of the class.
Carrie tapped her feet anxiously as she silently sat through class, her mind drifting every so often to her friends, her ex boyfriend, what he might and might not say to her, how badly it could go if she said the wrong thing. She chewed on her lip at the thought, forcing herself to get her focus back on class.
She got up when the bell rang and walked out with Kayla, catching up with the rest of Dirty Candy.

I Wouldn’t Know It
Warnings: Anxiety Mentions
Word Count: 2.8K
A/N: This hit too close to home and mimics my experience. Real talk tho, if you like do suffer from stuff, like seek out help! I’m always available to listen to yall cause school is stressful
The words blur together on the screen, the light emitting from your laptop has begun to give you a headache, one that forms behind your eyes and spreads around, throbbing and insistent, not fading even after you take two painkillers. Your stomach twists and turns, the sick feeling of anxiety already wrapping it’s inky, cold tendrils around you and plummeting you into further self doubt. You whine in the back of your throat and force yourself to write down your notes, lead wasting away as you match the notes provided to you from the instructors. You slump in your chair and force yourself to keep going. You don’t have time to waste, daylight is burning away and soon you’ll be trapped in your room with only darkness and your thoughts to keep you company.
“I just have to get through this chapter and I can rest,” you whisper encouragingly to yourself, gripping the mechanical pencil tighter, and when the lead snaps off you flinch. You can feel a lump form in your throat, and you take a shaky breath. You reach over and grab your water bottle that sits still closed and untampered with since you’ve brought it two hours ago. The ridges around the top press into your fingers, and the cool water hits your tongue but before you can even push the water further down your throat, you spit it back into the bottle, drips slipping past and wetting your shirt.
You’re physically unable to drink water. Your body rejects it, no matter how many times you try, it drips back into the water and leaves you feeling sicker than before. Tears burn in your eyes and your bottom lip trembles. You can feel the silent threat for sobs to break past you and consume you. You want to curl up into a ball and cry, to let the panic and anxiety consume your already fragile state of mind and let the tears wash over. But you know from experience it will do nothing except to strengthen said emotions, to weaken you further.
“Just one chapter-” the pencil scratches against the paper and the letters are shaky and slanted, opposite of your neat and tidy handwriting- “that’s all it is. One chapter.” Your voice wavers and tears flood your vision, and drip onto the paper, the soft blue lines spreading into a faded line, you suck in a harsh breath, the pencil falling onto the notebook. The heels of your palms press into your sockets and you try to steady your raspy breathing.
You sit in your room, a soft song played from your laptop is drowned out by your sobs, teeth burying themselves into your bottom lip in a pitiful attempt to muffle the cries. Your legs pinch together, a trembling taking over your body and running down your spine in a cold chill. The room closes in on yourself, your heart beating erratically, chest hurting in a sharp pain while an acidic taste fills your mouth. It’s all hopeless. Time ticks forward, your mouth pooling with dribble and you free that if you were to unclamp your teeth as they indent onto your skin, it would spill over your lap. Hot tears slip and burn as they curve past your face, the heels of your hand pressing tighter down, making colors appear behind your closed eyelids and the pain in your head sharpens. Everything feels all too much, your body on high sensitivity, the smell from the burning candle invading your senses and making you swallow the spittle, a croaking noise filling the room.
A sweet tune plays, your phone buzzing loudly against the wooden desk and you force yourself to peel away from the small cocoon that you have created in yourself. You blink away the tears, and your brows knit as Tomura’s name lights your phone screen. You let the buzzing continue and make your way to the bathroom, splashing water across your features and you wince at the image that reflects in the mirror. Your eyes are red and your bottom is red. You hear your phone buzz again and you switch the bright lighting in your room for a duller one that masks your features in shadows. It’s an unpleasant image but it'll mask the one that’s written over your face. You grab your phone and before you can accept the call, the constant buzzing stops and it’s replaced with a shorter one.
You sniffle and click on the message notification.
Tomura:
[Pick up]
Even after the little crying session, you still feel the heaviness in your body, weighing you down by the shoulders and the emptiness wraps around you- it exhausts you, the thought of talking to him making your eyes droop and when you catch a glimpse your notebook, displeasure courses through your body. Your phone buzzes again and you take in a long breath and release with a shuddering exhale.
You press at the accept button and your screen fills with his face while a corner is reserved for you.
“Where were you?” He lays on his bed and your mouth pulls into a thin line. “Whatever. Look, I know school started for you, so like how’s it going?” He looks at you through the screen and tilts his head. “Are you going to answer or not?”
You swallow the lump in your throat and nod slowly. “It’s uh,” your voice cracks and you shut your eyes, “it’s okay. Classes and notes,” your voice wavers and tears prick at your eyes, “you know the works.” His eyes narrow and he parts his lips. “How- How are you?” Your voice is high pitched and tight and you bite the inside of your cheeks.
“What’s wrong?” He’s quick to ask, and you see him sit up in his bed.
“Nothing,” you answer automatically. You look away from your phone and focus on the dimming screen of your laptop. “I’m fine.” He looks at you unconvinced with the answer. “Headache. Bad one.” You sniffle and instantly regret it, looking down shamefully at his gaze. “You know I get migraines when I’m stressed.”
“You’re stressed?” He looks at you with a curious expression and you place the phone down on your desk, giving him a clear view of your ceiling. “Hey, get back on here,” he protests.
“I’m- Look-” you flinch at the sound of your voice and scott yourself away from the desk- “I have a lot of work to do and-”
“You don’t sound well,” he comments.
“I’m fine Tomura,” you reply, balling your fists over your shorts. “I just-”
“What’s wrong? Why are you stressed?” He’s persistent, pushing forth without waiting for an answer.
You think about voicing your worries but they die before they have a chance to reach the tip of your tongue. “It’s nothing-”
“Is it because it’s online?”
You wince. You don’t want to say it outloud. You know you’ll cry if you’re forced to. “Tomu, really, I’m-”
“If that’s the case, you can talk to me. I might not under-”
“Tomura!” You shriek, and it comes out sounding as broken as you had feared. His name cracks on your tongue, sharp and it leaves a foregin feeling on your tongue. “I’m,” you sigh and all your energy has left you, leaving you enervated, “fine. I’m just stressed with school work. It’s fine. I-” you shake your head and reach over to your desk and grab the pencil, holding it limply between two fingers- “have work to do. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
Before you hang up, he speaks again. “I’m coming over.”
“No!” You blink back at your outburst. “No,” you repeat softerly. “Tomura, it’s not safe and-”
“Like I care,” he grunts. “I’ll be over in a few.”
He hangs up and you're left staring at a black screen that flashes the time of the call until the phone dims and turns off. You hold your phone gingerly in your hands and slump against the seat. Your hand swipes at the mousepad and the screen of your laptop lights up and you watch the words of your notes with tired eyes. Your eyes flicker back to the notebook and you exhale. The tabs close and the music stops, the room in silence. You rise from the chair and walk to the bed, phone in hand and you flop yourself onto it, eyes staring up at the ceiling and phone against your chest.
You lay in bed, the exhaustion laid thick and tears still glistening in your eyes. You take in a soft breath and the blankets sit in a folded pile to the side of you. Your fingers dance above your stomach and you want to reach over and cover yourself but lack the energy to do so. You swallow tightly and let your eyes close.
-
A hand shakes you, digits curling around your shoulder and forcing you to awaken from your small nap. Your palms cover your eyes and slip down; you slowly rise onto your elbows. “Hm?” You hum out, running a hand through your hair. You let out a yawn and look over to Tomura who lets his hand linger on your shoulder. “Tomura?”
“I told you I was coming over,” he comments, taking off his jacket and peeling away his mask, letting it rest on the back of your chair, the mask resting above the keyboard of your laptop. “Were you asleep for long?”
You click your phone on and check the time. Your lips pull into a frown and you lean back against the pillows. “I’m not sure,” you whisper, rubbing a hand down your face. “I didn’t check the time before.”
He turns around to face you and walks towards the bed. The bed squeaks under his weight and he crawls over your legs, his socks scratching over your skin. “Can I stay the night?” He asks, pulling the blanket over both your bodies, gently tucking you in, ruining his semi-hard work when he lays back down and ruffles the tucking that he did.
A smile quirks on your lips and you turn your head. “You know you can.” You move to rest on your side and watch him as he brushes back his hair. Your hand brushes over his hand and he lets his hand falls to the front of him. His eyes come to a close as you run your fingers through his hair, lightly scratching at his scalp. “You don’t have to ask.”
“It’s nice hearing you say yes,” he mumbles. His eyes open slowly and his hand comes to cup the side of your face. “So, how are you feeling?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” you whisper, avoiding his gaze. He pulls a face and his hand pinches at your cheek, tugging on the skin. “Tomura,” you whine, your hand coming to a still on top of his head.
“You’re lying,” he mutters, letting go of your cheek. The skin around blossoms into a dark color as he rubs gingerly on the tugged skin. “Tell me the truth.”
“It’s-” He gives you a pointed look and you falter. You turn onto your back and your hand slips away from him and his hand returns to his side. “I’m not used to online classes,” you mumble weakly. “It’s harder than I thought,” your vision blurs. “I thought it was going to be okay,” you pause for a moment and lick our lips, “I thought I was going to be okay,” you emphasize on the word ‘I’, your lips pulling into a frown.
“You’re going to be okay,” Tomura tells you, his hand returns to the curve of your face and he pushes you to look at him. “I know you. You can get through a few online classes.”
You shake your head and turn your body back to him, eyes closing as your hands come to grip the front of your shirt. His hand leaves your face and curves to the back of your neck. “You don’t know that. This,” your voice cracks and your curl into yourself, “is harder than I thought it was and I’m scared I won’t keep up and what if this major isn’t right for me and fuck!” You whimper and your hand tightens and twists at your shirt. “Tomura,” you sob out his name and turn your face to bury it into the pillows. He pulls you close to him, your face hidden in his chest, and your hands slip from between your chest and his to warp around him, your hands fisting the back of his shirt, and you feel the tears spill over and and cling onto your eyelashes, and onto his shirt. “It’s just all too much,” your words muffled between him and your legs jerk towards him, his legs coming above yours, “I’m so tired by all of it and it just started and,” your sobs interrupt you and your mouth feels heavy, words too heavy to say and finish.
His hand slides down to rest between your shoulder blades. “It’s okay,” he whispers, his fingers drumming on your skin. “You don’t have to focus on everything at once,” he whispers softly. He shushes your protests and continues to speak. “Just one day at a time. That’s all you have to do. One day at a time.” His hand rubs small circles on your back, he hums to you, his chest vibrating and resonating with you. “You can do that-” he pulls away and tilts you up by your chin- “right?” He’s steady as he speaks to you, looking at you with soft eyes, his words without a trace of annoyance or malice and coated in sweet.
“I don’t know,” you murmur. “It’s all so much Tomura. The work is a lot, and- and it’s online and I’m not used to it and-” You voice cracks and you let out a small whine, shaking your head. He might never understand, never know the worry of stress from school, his whole life mapped and planned, but he’s trying for you, and with his earnest gaze, you can almost believe his words.
“You’re going to be okay. I know you can handle it. It’s just a bit of work. You don’t have to do it for long, okay? Just a couple years and then you’re done.” His thumb brushes away a tear and you turn your face to press your lips against his palm. “You’re going to be okay. I know you are. You’re a strong person.”
You sniffle and your lips ghost over his palm. “What if I can’t?” Your words break and they linger on your tongue like the bitterness after medicine and you find it difficult to swallow.
“You can.” He presses his lips against your temple and pulls away. “I know you can. You’re sweet and you can do so much. You’re a good person.” Your eyes water and you remain quiet, coving the back of his hand with your palm. “You can do this online thing. I’ll be right beside you. Through thick and thin.”
You glanced back at him and turn to face him, eyes still shining and your voice small like a child after a nightmare. “You promise?” You don’t want him to leave you. You need the one good thing in your life to remain good, to remain by your side and hold you tenderly, like you’re the most delicate piece of porcelain the world has to offer. You need him to stay.
He leans down and moves his chapped lips across your cheek, softly kissing your cheeks, catching tears upon his lips. He slowly moves down and captures you in a soft kiss that tastes of tears and love, his grip around you turning a tad firmer, holding you close and his tongue swipes across your bottom lip and he pulls away with a soft smile nudging his forehead against yours. “I promise,” he says softly, pulling you into another kiss. “I’m not leaving you anytime soon.”
You give a small nod and peck at his lips. “I’m not leaving you either,” you whisper against him. You pull yourself close to him, taking comfort in his warmth, in his presence, in everything that he is. You shuffle upwards, placing your head against his shoulder, turning and brushing your lips against his neck, your still damp cheeks wetting his skin, and your kiss the trails away, your hand coming between your chest and his, placing it flat against his heart, feeling the steady rhythm in your palm and against your nose.
“I love you,” Tomura says in a delicate voice against you, the words filling the silence, sweet and light, like the scent of freshly bloomed flowers. “No matter- you’ll get through this. And if you need me to decay someone or something, I’ll do it in a heartbeat.”
You chuckle softly, pressing another kiss on his neck and your breath is hot against him. “Yeah, I know you would.” Your eyes close and you press yourself closer to him. “I love you too, Tomura.” Your fingers tap against his chest in a soft rhythm, dragging along the fabric of his shirt.

“You gonna talk or am I paying long distance to listen to you breathe, son?”
Javier sighed heavily, clicking his tongue against his teeth. “I don’t fucking know what to say, pops. It’s been a shit show and…”
“And?”
He raked his fingers through his hair, “And I feel like it’s all my fault.”
“How so?”
“How could it not be?” Javier questioned. “We should’ve stopped trying. She wanted to, but I… I wasn’t ready to give up hope. She didn’t want to disappoint me.”
“Who’s idea was it?”
“Who’s idea was what?”
Chucho chuckled, “To have another kid. Since you’re fretting about that.”
“I’m not fretting. She nearly died because of me.”
“Who suggested having another child?”
“She did.” Javier chewed on his bottom lip. “But she wanted to stop trying and I know… she kept trying because of me.” He sank back in the chair, keeping the phone pressed to his ear. “That’s not even half of it. All this bullshit stress is my doing too.”
“Yeah?”
Javier hesitated to tell his father about the stress factors in their lives. Despite how much he had changed over the years — he doubted his father would be as quick to believe him as she was. And he didn’t want to get into it. To explain everything that happened with the DEA.
“There’s just been a lot going on and…” Javier sighed, rubbing at his eyes. “I never wanna see her like that again.” He shook his head slowly. “They had her hooked up to all these wires and monitors and… I fucking hated it, pops.”
“Javier, how’s she doing now?”
“She’s resting. Josie’s curled up with her in bed. I’m glad she didn’t have to see her mother like that.” Javier dragged a hand over his face. “I could’ve lost both of them. Her and the baby.”
“But you didn’t.”
“I still could.” Javier pressed.
“Have you talked to her?”
“Today? No. She needs rest. I’m not stressing her out further about any of this bullshit.” Javier tucked the phone against his ear as he reached for the bottle of beer he’d been nursing, downing the rest of it with a quiet hiss.
“You should go sleep, Javier.”
“I’m good, pops.” Javier shrugged his shoulders. His plan was to crash on the sofa. She needed her rest and if he knew Josie — she’d taken over his side of the bed already. He didn’t want to wake either of them up.
“Talk to her.” Chucho said firmly. “I’m not going to claim to know her as well as you do. I’ve spent all of a month with her over the past few years, but… she’s a good one. Whatever you’re going through, don’t let it fuck this up.”
“Nothing’s going to fuck this up.”
His father chuckled, “You don’t do well under pressure.”
“No.” He shook his head. “I’m not going anywhere. That’s not… It’s not like that.” Javier rubbed at the back of his neck, brows furrowed together. “I thought I could fix something. Something that I was partially complicit in.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing. Not really.” Javier clenched his fists. “Colombia still has her hooks in us. I should’ve cut the line, but…”
“Javi?”
He tensed, glancing back over his shoulder to see her standing in the doorway. “Pops, I’ll call you tomorrow. I’ve gotta go.”
“Love you son.”
“Love you too.” Javier hung the phone up, staring at it for a moment as he raked his fingers through his hair and steadied himself. “You should be in bed.” He said softly as he looked back at her.
“Josie snores like you.” She folded her arms across her chest, smiling at him. “I couldn’t sleep.”
Javier moved towards her slowly, his heart hammering in his chest. “How long have you been out here?”
She chewed on her bottom lip, her eyes flickering over his face. “Long enough.”
“I just needed to vent,” He explained, swallowing thickly. “Pops is worried about you.”
“I’ll call him tomorrow.” She smiled a little sadly, resting her hand against her stomach. He hated seeing the ugly bruising on the top of her hand from where she’d had the IV. “Are we going to talk? Before you worry yourself into an early grave.”
Javier pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek, looking away. “It’s been a long day. A long week.”
She moved towards him, placing her hands on his shoulders. “Look at me, Javi.” She whispered and he complied. “It’s not your fault.” She squeezed his shoulders three times, before she trailed her fingers up his neck and cupped his cheeks. “None of it is and I refuse to let you beat yourself up over it. Okay?”
“Baby—”
“Okay?”
“Yeah.” He sighed heavily. “Fine.”
“I appreciate your willingness to take up my problems, but… it’s not your cross to bear.” She smiled up at him, rubbing her thumbs over his cheekbones. “And I know what you’re thinking… we should back off the DEA article, remove one area of stress—“
“It was them.” Javier admitted. “Monica said someone from the DEA offered to pay her a pretty sizeable chunk of money to start the rumor.”
“Sons of bastards.” She swore, laughing humorlessly. “Well, fuck them. I’m not backing off this.”
Javier clicked his tongue against his teeth, shaking his head. “You are something else baby.”
“I’m not going to let them win. Do I look like someone who is going to slink back into the shadows and let them win?”
“You need to relax.” Javier curled his arm around her waist and drew her into his chest. “But you have to let me carry some of this weight. Let me handle Monica. We’ll resolve this whole rumor bullshit.”
She clung to him, curling a hand around the back of his neck as she pressed her face against his chest. She pulled back a little, looking up at him. “We’re doing this together.”
Javier sighed heavily, giving her hip a squeeze. “I don’t want to see you in the hospital again. Not like that.” He shook his head. “I can’t do it.”
She rose up on her toes and kissed him gently. “I’ll take it easy, Javi. I really don’t want to end up in the hospital again either.” She chewed on her bottom lip. “But I’m not going to lay in bed until I give birth. I will lose my fucking mind.”
He nodded his head slowly, understandingly. “I’ve never known you to be able to keep still for very long.”
“Case in point.” She gestured to them and laughed. “A normal person would probably be in bed right now.” She made a face.
Javier pulled her towards him and pressed a kiss to the top of her head, before he swept her off her feet, cradling her in his arms. “If Josie’s taken over our bed, I guess we’ll just have to move to the sofa.” He remarked as he carried her out of the kitchen and into the family room.
He settled back onto the sofa and she rearranged herself more comfortably in his lap. She rested her face against his shoulder, brushing her nose against his neck. “Don’t be angry with her.”
“Who?”
“Monica.” She pressed a kiss to the underside of his jaw, before pulling back. “She’s just a kid and…” She chewed on the inside of her bottom lip, shaking her head slowly. “I wanna hear her side of the story.”
Javier gave her hip a gentle pat, before he slid his hand over her leg reassuringly. “What do you wanna do, then?”
“Let’s invite her over.” She said with a small smile. “That way it’s low stress for me… and we can figure out what’s going on.” She reached out and played with the hair that fell against his forehead. “And how we’re going to stop it. I’m not… I’m not ready to let go of this thing with the DEA. If they think they can play dirty, well…”
“You are an unstoppable force.” He grinned at her. “But you have to take care of you first, baby. I should’ve never started this whole mess while you were pregnant.”
“When did you submit the FOIA requests?”
“Before.” His shoulders sagged. “But I should’ve realized they’d retaliate.”
She shook her head. “No blaming yourself.” she leaned forward and rested her forehead against his. “We’re going to get through this.”
——
“Is this the part where you guys kill me?” Monica questioned, rocking nervously from the balls of her feet to her heels as she looked between them.
You shook your head slowly. “We really just want answers, Monica. The claims you made—“
“They were just rumors! I told a few people and just let it get around. I didn’t…” Monica raked her fingers through her hair. “I didn’t mean for all of this to happen.”
“But it did happen.” Javier said sharply as he steepled his fingers and he leaned his elbows against the table. “If you have plans to work in law enforcement, you should realize this. The choices you make — even ones that seem minor — cause reactions.” He shook his head. “But you took a bribe.”
“Ten thousand dollars. Really?” You questioned, lips drawn into a thin line. “That’s all it took to turn against us?”
“You have no idea how much I needed the money.” Monica whispered, staring at the table. “I don’t know how they knew.” She dragged her fingers through her hair and pressed her hands against her forehead.
“What did they know?” You looked towards Javier, brows furrowed. “Is there more to this story, Monica?”
She sniffled quietly, before looking up at you, tears in her eyes. “I’m in a really bad situation right now.” Her eyes flickered briefly towards Javier, but his unreadable expression turned her gaze back to you. “And I don’t say this for sympathy. I don’t deserve any sympathy right now, but…”
You reached across the table and took her hand, squeezing it gently. “You’re a good kid, Monica. If you’re in trouble, you can tell us.” You kicked Javier under the table, encouraging him to say something as well.
Javier cleared his throat, rocking his jaw slowly as he stared at her. “I know something’s been going on… the missed classes, the late work… What is it?”
Monica rubbed the sleeve of her sweatshirt under her nose, before wiping away a stray tear. “At the end of last semester, my parents cut financial ties with me.” She admitted. “I… wasn’t in a good situation with them, but…” She shook her head slowly and looked away. “It’s complicated.”
“Is that why you needed the money?”
“The irony of the rumor.” Monica started, her voice wavering. “I’m just going to say this… I’m just…” She nervously rubbed at her lips before she sank back in her seat, somehow managing to make herself seem smaller. “I’m gay.”
“Is that why your parents kicked you out?” You questioned, your heart aching for this poor kid. You couldn’t even imagine that situation.
“Oh, Monica…” Javier said quietly, shaking his head.
Monica nodded her head slowly. “I told them over the holidays and…” She wrung her hands. “It had been years since they hurt me. But I couldn’t keep living a lie.” She wiped at her eyes again, looking at you then. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.” Javier said quickly. “I should’ve realized something was going on with you. You’ve been off all semester.” He dragged his fingers through his hair and exhaled heavily. “Are you in a safe place now?”
She shook her head. “I’m in a hostel right now. I’m trying to find somewhere to live. The money… I’ll give it back.”
You shook your head. “No. You’re not giving the money back. You did what they told you to do. That money’s yours.” You looked towards Javier then, trying to read his pensive expression. “What is it?”
“I’m trying to think how to help her.” He gestured towards Monica. “Look, first thing Monday morning we’re talking to the dean. We’ll get the rumor brushed aside and explain it’s the fucking DEA playing games.” Javier looked at you then, brows furrowed. “You think Connie might know someone?”
You shrugged, “Yeah. I mean... Connie knows everyone.” You looked towards Monica then, a small smile playing over your lips. “We’ll help you.”
“Why?”
Javier rubbed at the back of his neck, stretching his back as he readjusted in his seat. “Because we’re good people, Monica. And you’ve gotten caught up in our shit.”
Monica looked between the two of you, her bottom lip trembling before a flood of tears overwhelmed her. She sobbed into her hands, making absolutely no coherent sense with her words.
“Go get her some tissues,” You told Javier as you got up from your seat and moved around the table to pull a chair up close to her. “Monica, look… I know this situation really sucks, but you’re going to get through it okay?”
“I shouldn’t have taken the money.”
“No. You shouldn’t have.” You weren’t going to sugar coat it. “But people make mistakes. Especially when they’re going through things.” You looked up at Javier as he held out the box of tissues. “Here.” You passed her the box.
Javier rested his hand on your shoulder, squeezing it gently and you reached up to squeeze it. “Monica you’re a smart kid. I’ve read your papers, you know your shit. But you can’t… taking money from the DEA…” You shook your head.
She wiped at her nose, looking up at you. Her shoulders shook as she tried to control another sob of emotion. “I regretted it the second I did it. The moment I opened my mouth and started the rumor…” She looked towards Javier then. “You’ve been so good to me Professor Peña. Both of you. I just needed the money so I can have somewhere to live… somewhere safe from my parents.” She wiped at her eyes furiously. “I wanted… I wanted to help kids like me, but I… I’m going to lose everything.”
You shook your head, “No. No. Monica. You’re not.” You reached out and stroked the back of her shoulders gently. “I’m not a bitch, contrary to whatever Javier might say.”
“He’s never said that.” Monica said quickly with a short laugh.
You smiled a little, glad that it made her laugh. “Your internship isn’t going anywhere, kid.”
“Really?”
“But you are going to have to help me.” You told her, arching a brow. “This shit with the DEA just proves they need to have a come to Jesus meeting.” You looked back at Javier then, your heart fluttering a little at the look in his eyes as he stared at you. “I’m not stopping.” Your gaze fell back on Monica. “I can’t do a lot right now, but you can.”
“How?”
“I need someone to help do some research for this article.” Your head canted to the side. “Think you can do that for me?”
“I’ll do anything.” Monica sniffed.
Javier leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of your head, before he moved back around the table to sit down. “Monday morning we go to the dean’s office. We clear this up.” He looked to you then.
“How much do you make at your jobs?”
“Like five and a half dollars an hour.” Monica answered, her brows furrowing together.
“Josie can be a handful and I’m probably going to need help. We usually pay the sitter eight an hour.” You looked towards Javier, smiling when he nodded his head in agreement with your plan. “I could use the help.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yep.” Javier said with a shrug. “And I’ll see what Connie can do about finding you a safe place to live. I’d offer you a room here, but… We already have it set up for the baby.”
Monica shook her head, “No. I wouldn’t want to impose. I have enough saved for like three hundred and fifty a month…”
“We’ll figure it out.” Javier said with an understanding nod. “Now, you mentioned your parents… hurting you?” He leaned against the table, staring at her. “Are you in danger?”
She shook her head. “I’m not. I didn’t… they don’t know where I am.” Monica hugged her arms around herself. “They know where I go to school, but they don’t… They wouldn’t come here.”
You rubbed her back reassuringly. “If you need anything.”
You couldn’t wrap your head around how someone could hurt their child. You knew it happened. You had seen the results of it, but… it just made you think of Josie. The thought of making that little girl even cry by saying ‘no’ made your heart ache. “You’re going to be okay, Monica.”
“Thank you.” She wiped at her eyes with the sleeves of her hoodie again.
“Do you want to stay for dinner?”
Monica shook her head, “I have work tonight.”
“Any time.” You told her, offering her a kind smile.
“How are you doing?” Monica asked, sniffling a little.
You shrugged, rubbing at your stomach. “I’m pregnant, I have high blood pressure, and my partner would be happy to see me never leave bed.” You looked towards Javier with a grin. “And not even in the fun way.”
Monica laughed, looking between the two of you. “I wish my parents had been like you guys. Your daughters are lucky.”
“It’s not always sunshine and puppy dogs.” You rolled your eyes. “Speaking of puppy dogs…” You shot Javier a look. “I’m dropping hints.”
“I think I’m going to go…” Monica said quietly. “I need to decompress before work.”
“I know the feeling.” You squeezed her arm, before you got up from your seat. “If you need anything you have my number.”
“Thank you. Thank you both.” Monica stepped towards you and hugged you tightly. You wrapped your arms around her and held her. “I’m proud of you, kid.”
Monica’s smile was thanks enough.
You headed down the hallway to Josie’s room, while Javier walked Monica out.
Josie was sound asleep, clutching at her stuffed animal. Her curly hair peeking out from above the edge of her blanket. She loved burrowing under the blankets. You just couldn’t understand it… how could someone hurt their own flesh and blood.
Javier wrapped his arms around you as he came up behind you. “That was… an interesting conversation.” He remarked, kissing your neck. “That poor kid.”
“I knew there had to be more to her story.” You chewed on your bottom lip. “She knew a lot about the emergency room. It seemed like a nervous habit, the way she told me about every little thing in the room.”
“You’re too damn observant.”
You laughed and leaned back against him. “I am good at what I do, Javi.” You tensed a little, rubbing at your stomach. “Your daughter has an incredibly strong kick.”
Javier rested his hand over your stomach just below where your hand was, “Where?”
You curled your hand around the back of his, sliding it up to where the baby was kicking. It was a faint flutter at first, but then a swift movement followed.
“Damn.” Javier whispered, keeping his hand pressed there. Hoping to feel it again. “You know… I never fucking expected someone to sit in front of me and say they wished I was their parent.”
You tilted your head to look at him at him with a grin. “I think we just gained a third daughter.”
“Oh, did we?” He snorted. “I didn’t sign any papers.”
“It was a silent thing.” You teased, reaching back to stroke his cheek. “She needs a support system.”
“Steve and Connie like adopting.”
“Javi.”
“She’s also nineteen.”
“Minor detail.” You laughed softly, pulling Josie’s room closed. “What do you think they’ll do next?”
“The DEA?” He questioned and you nodded. “Fuck if I know, but… we’re taking them down.”
A chill ran down your spine. “It’s not going to be easy.”
“Nothing good ever is.” Javier reminded you.

Chapter Eighteen: The One With the His Job
Warnings: N/A
Word Count: 3054
He told her there was a danger with him. That there was always going to be a threat. He warned her what could possibly come if they went further. But neither cared. Neither wanted to stop. There were such strong feelings between the two that if they stopped, Lily would be left with something missing in her life. She didn't want to let him go, despite being hesitant to let him in. He created this new feeling of safety for Lily, yet here they sat. She knew what her parents were doing. It was recorded in studies that the Winter Soldier was unlocked through a series of Russian words, triggers that would set off the chemicals in his brain.
And for the first time, Lily felt scared around Bucky Barnes. But it didn't last long.
With his eyes squeezed tight, Bucky made his way towards Lily and Hunter. Fluttering those steel-blue eyes, Bucky looked at Lily, and she knew he was still there. He turned his back to the two, blocking the view of Lily's family. And he spoke, cool, calm, and collected.
"For two of the smartest scientists, you don't do a lot of research," Bucky began, "I don't work like that anymore. Now in about two minutes Captain America and the Falcon are going to walk through those doors. Do us all a favour, and just sit. And wait."
The clicking of a gun made Lily's heart stutter. It came from one of the three Osbornes. She whispered a quiet prayer, despite her lack of religious beliefs, and tugged the young boy closer to her. Her breathing was rapid and tears brimmed at the mossy iris of her eyes, creating a glass-like effect. It made her look like a real doll, just as Bucky called her. A small shuttering breath escaped her lips as she pressed a kiss to the soft tufts of blonde on Hunter’s head. If anything, she just wanted to shield Hunter from all of this. With what he had been through at such a young age already, Lily felt her heartbreak at the idea of him having to witness the events that would follow.
"Lily go to the car," Bucky whispered, glancing over his shoulder, "Please."
She didn't hesitate. Most people she was sure would try and stay and help, but Lily would be damned if she had Hunter stay in this cafe for a second longer. Without skipping a beat, the blonde tugged her son away from the booth and darted with him towards the car they had brought here that morning, rushing him into the back. The moment the doors closed, both Lily and Hunter let out a breath of relief. Leaning her head forward, Lily placed it on the top of her steering wheel, blinking away the tears that threatened to fall as everything began to settle in.
The sound of her phone ringing made every hair on her body stand on edge.
Glancing up, Lily sniffled while answering through her car. It was Rose. And dear God was the elder sister glad to hear from her. But nervous at the same time. She wasn't sure if Rose knew about what was happening, she could only assume so, seeing as the younger sister had been in the cafe not too long ago with Lily's best friend.
"Lily! Thank god you answered are you okay?" Rose's panicked voice quivered as it rang through her speakers, "Do you have Hunter? Please tell me you have Hunter?"
"Yeah, yeah Rose I've got Hunter. We're okay. We're in the car." Lily responded, her own voice barely above a whisper, "Are you and Gen okay?"
"Yeah...yeah, we're at Gen's apartment. I tried to take Hunter, I tried. But they...they ju- "
"Rose stop. It's okay...listen I'm with Hunter right now I'll call you back. Make sure Gen's okay, and just stay there." Lily finished, "I love you." and with that, the blonde ended the call, turning her attention to the clear shell-shocked boy that was sitting in the back seat.
"Mom is Bucky gonna hurt grandma, grandpa, and uncle Cedar?" his voice whispered, shaking and cracking halfway through.
Lily felt a ton of bricks smash against her chest. She herself didn't even know the answer to that. She trusted Bucky, yes. But this was also his job. To take down the people who do these sorts of things. Bring them to justice, by whatever means needed. And a part of her knew that there was a possibility she could lose her parents and brother within the next few minutes, but the other half of her knew that Bucky wouldn't. She felt deep inside that if it came down to it, he would let them live and be brought to legal task instead of violence. But Lily didn't know...but she couldn't leave Hunter hanging. If she did that, then he'd know her own thoughts on the matter. And it wouldn't help either case.
"No." she stated, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, "No I don't think Bucky will."
And she was right.
Not too long later, the doors to the cafe swung open after the police screamed down the street. Lily watched with pain in her eyes as her parents, unscathed with a mere bruise or two were walked from the building, Bucky, Steve, and Sam following close behind. No one looked injured or hurt, and a sigh of relief escaped from Lily. Bucky glanced over at the car and excused himself from the trio, jogging towards the car. Lily watched as he opened the passenger side door, sliding in.
"Hey, Hunt buddy," Bucky whispered, shifting to turn.
"Hi, Bucky." Hunter returned, a sense of relaxation in his tone after seeing that no one had been injured, "Is everything okay now?"
Bucky's eyes met Lily's, and the two shared a moment of silence before he began to speak once again, "Yeah. Everything's okay now buddy."
-----
"How're you feeling, hun?" Lily whispered as she took a seat on Hunter's bed after tucking him in for the night, "Lots happened today. Is there anything you wanna talk about?"
"Why'd they do it?" the boy whispered, looking up at his mother, "Why did they do it, mom, I don't get it."
Lily let out a soft sigh, running a hand across the boy’s forehead, "I don't know bud. I don't. I wish I had an answer for you. Bucky's taking care of it. anything you need to know I'll tell you, okay? I promise." the blonde hummed, reaching her pointer finger out.
Hunter nodded and wrapped his smaller finger around hers. Pressing a kiss to the boy’s forehead, Lily stood from the bed. Flicking off the lights, she smiled gently at Hunter curling under his blankets before she shut the door to his bedroom. Digging the heels of her hands into her eyes, Lily walked down the stairs where Bucky, Sam and Rose were sitting in her living room. She smiled gently when they looked up at her before she took a seat next to Bucky on the couch.
"So this is a daily thing with you guys, hm?" Rose asked, sipping her water, "Like what do you guys do when people aren't trying to blow up the city or take over the world?"
The room fell silent except for the late-night news playing in the background. Bucky and Sam looked at each other with frazzled expressions as though they didn't even know what they did when there wasn't an imminent threat to the city or the world. Lily couldn't help but laugh at that fact. Out of the four of them, she lived the most basic and mundane life. Rose was a world-famous stylist and designer, Bucky and Sam were superheroes. Lily was just a children's doctor living in suburban Manhattan with a family and a dog. The other three had travelled all over the world, and Lily hadn't. So learning what these fantastic people did in their free time did seriously intrigue the girl.
"Yeah I mean there aren't always people trying to take over the world," Lily continued, sipping her glass of wine, "Do you like...go bowling?"
Bucky let out a laugh, his head rolling backwards, "Bowling? I guess so, I mean there is an alley in the compound. But we mostly just hang out at our own places really. Wait for the next mission. I help at the retirement home, Sam hosts a veteran support group. Steve never stops working." the man hummed, his arm draping across Lily's shoulders.
"Speaking of bowling," Lily sighed, readjusting herself, "Hunter's birthday is next week and I still have no idea what to do. He's getting older and it's harder to come up with ideas."
"How do we go from talking about Bucky and Sam being literal superheroes to Hunter's birthday," Rose chuckled, "But I'm not sure Lil. Maybe take them bowling I guess."
"Or bring him and a few of the kid’s friends by the compound," Sam suggested, "If the kid’s friends are anything like Hunter, I'm sure they'd love it. Run a watered-down version of a training thing to be an Avenger."
"I'd love that Sam thank you. I just want to give him something to take his mind off of everything going on." Lily shrugged, leaning further into Bucky.
-----
November seventh. The faithful day that Lily welcome her baby boy into the world around her. Into her arms, into the life of New York. Despite her not wanting kids for quite some time, she wouldn't take back having Hunter. She just wished he was the son of someone better. For his father was the person Lily wouldn't even wish upon her worst enemy. Every year since Hunter was born, Lily wanted to make his birthday special. She'd pull out all of the stops if it meant seeing her boy smile brighter than she ever had before. And in the times they were experiencing now, she knew he needed it, as did she, more than ever.
"So how do you know the avengers?" One of the kid’s parents, Jill, asked as everyone unloaded from the cars when they arrived at the compound, "Because Hunter's story seems a bit far-fetched, hun."
Lily sighed and rested her hand on her son’s shoulder and looked over at the woman, "What did he tell you, Jill?"
"That his mommy's seeing the Winter Soldier." the woman hummed, placing her own hand on her son’s shoulder, "Sounds like a fantasy."
"Fantasies can come true." A deep voice hummed. Lily couldn't help but grin at the feeling of a metal arm wrapping around her waist. Bucky. The small group of parents went silent as the man pressed a kiss to Lily's temple, "And only seeing? Here I was hoping we could refer to it as something a little bit more, doll." he teased, earning an elbow from Lily.
Lily felt her face heat up and her breathing catch in her throat. As much as she wanted to rub all of this in Jill's face, she still had that massive bundle of nerves inside of her that held her back. All of the parents here weren't exactly Lily's friends. She knew them from the PTA at Hunter's school and a few from her neighbourhood, and they were all very much those cliche suburban moms that would be seen in movies. Stuck up, believed themselves to be perfect with the perfect children. And Lily quite liked their children, but the mothers? Ugh, Lily couldn't stand them. However, they were insistent on joining the kids for the tour.
"Nice to see you finally have a man in your life," One of the other moms, Gina, hummed as the group began to walk towards the compound, "And a strong father figure for Hunter."
Lily glanced to the side, scoffing at her remarks, "I'm both Hunter's mother and father. And I don't need a man, Gina, I've raised Hunter alone his whole life essentially." she muttered, resting a hand on Bucky's arm to relax the tension.
Ever since the night Cedar attempted to break into Scott's apartment, something inside of Lily grew. A new side of her, she supposed. Growth, almost. A part of her knew that if she were able to stand up to Scott, the man who had destroyed any ounce of confidence she had throughout their relationship, who were Gina and Jill to hold her back. Of course, there was only a certain extent she would go to, for she was still nervous to even speak to people most of the time.
"Welcome to the Avengers compound!" Tony boomed as the doors opened for everyone to walk in, "If you'd like to join the little kiddos on the tour Just keep to the left here with Mr. Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon. and if parents would like a few drinks, follow me, towards the lounge."
A few of the parents joined the group of kids as they wandered down the hall. Hunter waved goodbye to Lily as she and the other parents made their way towards where Tony Stark was leading them. The small group of mothers and fathers whispered as Bucky tightened his grip on Lily's waist. The last thing Lily actually wanted to do was spend time with these parents, however, she was willing to sacrifice her sanity for a few hours if it meant giving Hunter the best day ever.
"Alright, Cyborg go help Nat bring out the refreshments while I get these people situated, hm?" Tony teased, patting Bucky's flesh arm, "Lily come, help me entertain your friends."
When Bucky's arm left Lily's waist, Tony took over by looping his arm with hers. Lily raised her eyebrow at the man as he took her over towards the rest of the group, sitting next to her on one of the couches. Lily gave the billionaire a quizzical look but he just nodded, as if telling her to simply go along with it. Lily and Tony had only spoken a handful of times, but he seemed fairly persistent about letting Bucky go get the things from the kitchen.
"So Lily," one of the fathers, Thomas, started, "it's really nice to see you get back out into the field. Not even just romantically, socially too. Maybe you'll actually come to the PTA group date nights, with someone other than Genevive." he chuckled, leaning backwards on his seat.
"She wouldn't attend anyway, Tommy. Lily isn't one for fun." Jill chuckled, crossing her legs, "What is it you do, Lily? Stay at home with your dog and kid. Come on, no one wants to see their kid that often. The only time I see you out is with Joey!" the woman continued, shaking her head.
Despite it being somewhat truthful, the woman's words stung a bit. Lily knew she didn't go out often and never really tried to connect with everyone around her. The only time she really did was when she was essentially forced, and she figured that's why Jill figured to go for a sensitive part in Lily's life. But then again, Jill was also a two-faced gossip who could never stay out of other people's business. Lily seemed to be her favourite topic of discussion, and her favourite to pick on. The blonde felt as though she were back in high school, or hell, even middle school. Jill was always going after Lily's insecurities, as though she could see right through her. It terrified the young mother, but Lily knew how much Hunter loved Jill's son. So she went through with it and sucked it up so her son could enjoy himself.
"Interesting comment...uh what was your name?" Tony commented, leaning forward slightly.
"Jill. Jill Reinhart." the redhead hummed, tilting her head to the side.
"Right. Jen, so like I was saying. Interesting comment. Lily here is actually quite in tune with fun. She attended a party I threw not too long ago and was an absolute hoot." Tony chuckled, squeezing the blonde’s shoulder, "And just because she actually enjoys spending time with her kid, who is a saint, doesn't mean she's any less fun. So."
The room fell silent. Lily looked over at the man with wide eyes as she took in what he had said. Jill always managed to find that soft spot, but Tony was quick to the jump. She figured this was why he had sent Bucky off, so he could deal with the clear teenage drama that was taking place inside of a group of adults. It probably didn't help Lily was the youngest of the entire group and was clearly the most vulnerable.
"W-well I was just- "
"No, jenny I really don't wanna hear it. Ah! here come Nat and Bucky with refreshments." Tony hummed, wiggling his eyebrows at the blonde before taking a seat next to nat as she sat down.
"you alright doll?" Bucky hummed as he walked over, reaching his hand out, "Mind joining me in the kitchen for a quick second?" he continued.
Lily nodded and took the man’s hand, standing from the couch. She glanced over her shoulder to see Jill sitting there with an absolutely shocked face. Lily smiled gently to herself as Bucky tugged her out of the lounge and into the hallway. A giggle escaped both of their lips as he spun her into his arms, leaning her up against one of the walls just outside of the kitchen. shaking her head, Lily wrapped her other hand into the man’s hair, enjoying the soft feeling of the dark tresses. He hummed softly, before bending down and pecking her lips.
"I was about ready to absolutely rip a new one off of that woman." Bucky chuckled as he pulled away, resting his forehead against the shorter girls.
"Mmm, that's Jill. Just a PTA woman. A real handful." Lily cooed, letting out a deep breath, "Now what can I help you with?"
"Well..." Bucky hummed, leaning back gently, "I was just wondering...seeing as we may as well be. And I absolutely adore spending time with you and Hunter is the sweetest boy...Do we want to I don't know...make it official? Basically, what I'm asking, Lily Osborne, will you be my girlfriend?" he finished.
A new sense of fear settled deep within Lily's stomach.

The Infamous Jethro Tull Incident
PART THIRTY-THREE OF THE DO YOU SEE HER FACE? SERIES
Pairing: Jess Mariano x Original Character (Ella Stevens)
Warnings: discussions of anxiety/panic attacks please read with caution, plentiful pop culture references, allergies
Word Count: 6.9K
Summary: Visiting Stars Hollow once again, Ella and Jess help Luke with his custody battle and see the Spring Fling.
A/N: The descriptions of panic attacks in this chapter and in this fic are based on research and my own experiences. Everyone is different. If you need to talk, I am always here. I just felt Gilmore Girls always kind of ignored Jess’s trauma, and the after-effects it would have had on him.
Though Chris and Matthew had invited them out, neither Jess nor Ella had any desire to eat at some fancy restaurant on a Sunday night. It was under the guise of a celebration over the monthly Zine including an interview with someone who had once interned for Dave Eggers. Not that it was a small feat, but both Ella and Jess knew it was simply just an excuse for Chris and Matthew to go on an expensive double date. Often, the two called them frugal. And they called the two of them unnecessarily hedonistic. Whatever the case, Ella was glad to have the apartment for the night. Two days into spring break, and she was still only just bouncing back from the mid-semester exhaustion.
She sat cross-legged in her pajamas on the couch, sketching, as the water on the stove began to boil. Once again, she was attempting dinner. Spaghetti, something simple, she’d told Jess earlier in the evening. She could totally manage it. She still couldn’t understand why her baking skills were never able to travel over into cooking territory. Just as she finished the lines around the eyes, the phone on the counter began ringing. Putting her sketchbook to the side, she rushed up to the counter and saw it was Jess’s cellphone alight with a number.
“Jess Mariano’s phone,” she said as she opened the phone, hoping to answer in time.
“Ella?” the voice came through the receiver.
“Luke?” she asked.
“Yeah, it’s me.”
A smile came to her lips. “Hey, boss! How are you?”
Luke cleared his throat, hesitating a minute. “Oh, well I…”
“Jess is in the shower, but I can get him if you really need to talk,” she cut in, growing worried. Not only because she noticed the water on the stove was boiling over and hissing on the oven. She dashed over to the stove.
“No, that’s okay. I have no desire to speak to him while he’s any degree of naked,” Luke said gruffly.
Ella uttered a chuckle and she stirred the pot to lessen the overflow. “Well, that makes one of us.”
Only a heavy sigh came from the other side of the phone.
“Sorry, sorry,” she said. As she broke the spaghetti in half, balancing the phone between her ear and her shoulder, several noodles flew across the kitchen. A few landed on the burner and started to smoke instantly. “Fuck!”
“What?” Luke asked, suddenly alarmed.
Growling under her breath in frustration, she sweeped the noodles from the burner with a damp kitchen towel. “Nothing, sorry. The spaghetti caught on fire but it’s fine now.”
“Why are you trying to make spaghetti? You can hardly make toast,” Luke groaned knowingly.
She rolled her eyes. “I’m broadening my horizons, alright? But that doesn’t matter. What’s going on?”
“Well, uh...you know April?”
“The name rings a bell, yes.”
“Well, Anna wants to move her to New Mexico,” Luke said, voice emotionless. “And I’m trying to get joint custody. The lawyer uh...he said Jess, or you, might be a good character reference. The trial, or whatever we should call it, is on Tuesday. If you can’t get here, that’s fine. They’re speeding up the process because they’re moving away so soon. You could just put it in writing, but I don’t know if it would get here in the mail. So, if you can’t, I completely-”
“Luke,” she interjected.
“Yeah?”
“We’ll be there,” Ella said with finality. “What time is the hearing?”
“Eight,” he answered.
Nodding, she stirred the spaghetti. Furrowing her brows, she considered the time. “Could we maybe stay over tomorrow night? Then, we can all go to the courthouse.”
“Really? Is Jess okay with that?” he asked.
“Jess won’t hear of anything else, I promise. The Zine just came out. The other guys will understand. We’ll call it a family emergency. And I’m on my spring break. It’s fine, boss,” Ella reassured him, face flushed over the steaming pot.
“Are you sure? I mean, only if you’re sure-”
She sighed again, a long exhale through her nose. “Luke, I’m sure. Just hang in there. We’ll be there tomorrow. I’ll bring you some of this spaghetti, if you want.”
“I think I’ll pass,” he said flatly.
“Noted.”
There was a long pause. “Ella?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
A sad smile ghosted over her face. “Don’t mention it.”
“Hey, it’s the Spring Fling, too. In case you guys need something to do tomorrow night,” Luke added, shifting the conversation away from emotions.
A pang of nostalgia hit her, and she could smell the greasy food. “Oh, well, I was on the fence about coming up there before. But the Spring Fling? There’s the thing to seal the deal.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Luke grumbled, unamused by her sarcasm.
“Alright. Well, I gotta focus on this spaghetti, for the sake of public safety. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” she said, brows furrowed in concern.
“Yeah. Okay, Ella. See you tomorrow.”
“Bye, Luke.”
“Bye.”
Hanging up the phone, Ella flipped it closed and set it back on the counter. Waiting for the spaghetti to finish boiling, she tried to hum but couldn’t bring herself to. A knot sat in her stomach. She knew how much Luke loved April; she had seen it even through the few months she’d witnessed them together. And she knew how much April loved Luke. She wondered over how the girl would feel, if she were not allowed to see Luke ever again. Not exactly like her own mother’s death, but Ella could certainly sympathize.
She was too deep in thought to hear Jess emerge from the bathroom, hair damp and still dripping slightly.
“Is something burning?” he asked, coming up next to her.
She jumped slightly and then huffed out a breath when he smirked at her surprise. “For just a second, it was. But, now, everything is under control.”
“Whatever you say, Stevens,” he teased, brown eyes twinkling.
Pursing her lips, she finally took her eyes away from the water. “We have to go to Stars Hollow tomorrow.”
“What? Why?” he asked, his brow crinkling.
She bit the inside of her cheek. “Luke is trying to get joint custody of April. The hearing is on Tuesday morning and he wants us to testify as references.”
“Huh,” Jess deadpanned, nodding slightly.
“If we get there tomorrow, we can make sure he doesn’t completely melt down during the dinner shift and then ride with him to the courthouse. Is that alright with you? If you can’t come, I could just-”
“Woah, Stevens. I’ll go. Obviously, I’ll go. Not like Matthew can’t babysit Chris all on his own for a couple days. He’s been doing it pretty much his whole life,” Jess said, pressing a kiss of reassurance to her cheek.
“Good. Just...making sure.” She bit at her thumbnail for a moment, nodding. “What if...what if he loses her?”
“I don’t know,” Jess said, shaking his head. “But, at least we can try to help. Here’s hoping it’s not too A Few Good Men.”
“There’s the bright side, Mr. Sunshine,” she said, smiling weakly.
Jess smirked a tiny smirk, then grabbed the wooden spoon as the pot began boiling over, spaghetti spilling onto the glass top, once again.
. . .
Misty March air seeped in through the cracked Station Wagon windows, the afternoon sun warming up the early spring day. Pollen and dust were stagnant in the air, flowers beginning to bloom in the Connecticut countryside. Television, “Marquee Moon,” played on the radio, Jess’s arm draped over Ella’s headrest. Hydrangeas were blooming, blue and purple and pink, on the sides of the road as they crossed over the edge of town into Stars Hollow.
As soon as they passed over the border, Ella’s eyes began to itch, and she started sneezing into the crook of her elbow.
“Jeez, Stevens. Bless you,” Jess said, eyebrows raised. “Are you getting a cold?”
“I don’t know,” she sighed, sniffling and blinking the irritated shine from her eyes. “Maybe it’ll make me more sympathetic to the judge.”
“There’s one way to win a case,” he chuckled.
“Hey, who am I to look down on a shortcut?” she said, shrugging lightly as she took the turn down Main Street.
As they reached town center, their eyes widened. Parking was one of the chief worries to pop into Ella’s mind, but not the only one. Hay was stacked up every which way, forming a maze. Stray straws littered the empty spaces, bales piled ten feet high and taking up space on every single street. Hitting the brakes, Ella came to a stop on the edge of the strip, next to the bookstore.
“What the hell is this?” Jess asked, flabbergasted.
Shaking her head, Ella was at a loss for words. Then, it dawned on her, and she groaned in frustration. “I forgot to tell you. Luke said it’s the Spring Fling this week. I guess now that means a hay bale maze?”
“Ugh,” Jess grunted, rolling his eyes. “The last time I was at this thing, Taylor almost called the cops on me because of my Jethro Tull t-shirt.”
She chuckled as she turned around, headed for the small parking lot with the dumpsters behind Luke’s. “Well, only time will tell what this year will bring.” Sneezing again, she sighed.
“Besides hay fever, that is,” Jess added, teasing, tucking a strand of hair which had fallen loose behind her ear again.
“We’re doing this for Luke, we’re doing this for Luke,” she muttered under her breath, feeling a headache already forming behind her eyes.
. . .
She felt transported to the past as they entered Luke’s through the back door, leading into the stock room. It still smelled of tomatoes, dirt, pine; an odd mixture but not unwelcome. The room dark and dank, Ella took Jess’s hand and led him carefully through the random crates and boxes. In his other hand, he held their old duffel, containing both of their only business-appropriate clothes. Apparently, she would be wearing the pencil skirt again much sooner than she had hoped. Jess could already hear Luke ranting before they got to the main room, flashbacks to the consequences of stealing gnomes and baseballs and dry erasers.
Lane passed by the stock room door and caught sight of them out of the corner of her eye. A panic filled her eyes and, immediately, she approached them, a dirty dish bin held in just one hand.
“He’s on the warpath, guys,” she began, retreating into the dim room and glancing over her shoulder anxiously.
“Well, hello to you too, Lane,” Ella smirked.
Lane’s face morphed into a delicate, rushed smile. “Right, sorry, sorry. How’s one of America’s most historical cities?”
Jess shrugged. “Historic.”
“Wow, your vocabulary had really grown since I last saw you,” Lane said, feigning amazement.
A crash sounded, followed by a yell, from out in the main room. The door slammed and Ella couldn’t mistake the sound of a fearful yelp from some customer.
“I think we can continue this love fest later,” Ella suggested, gesturing to the main room.
“Agreed,” Lane said, turning on her heel.
Jess and Ella followed her out of the stock room, finding the counter almost completely empty of customers. The tables were dotted with just a few customers, staring down silently at their plates, faces drawn in fear. Boots trodding heavily on the tiled floor, Luke was making his way back from the door to the kitchen. Caesar was nowhere in sight, and a thin cloud of smoke was billowing through the kitchen window. The front windows were a view of nothing but giant walls of hay. Nothing boded well. Ella glanced at Jess doubtfully, and he only gave a slight shake of his head in response.
“Can I get you guys something?” Lane asked, returning to the space behind the counter.
“No, I think I’d rather not risk it,” Jess said, taking a stool, placing the duffel on the floor next to him.
Ella hopped onto the seat next to him. “Says Mr. I-Live-On-The-Edge.”
“Even I have my limits,” he replied.
“I’m fine, too. Thanks Lane,” Ella told her friend.
A couple steaming plates appeared from the kitchen window, burgers blackened and fries soggy. Lane looked at them suspiciously, but placed them in front of Kirk, who sat on Jess’s other side. Kirk grinned and nodded emphatically.
“The gourmet experiments keep on coming,” he exclaimed, digging in with a fork and knife instead of his hands.
Ella’s brow crinkled. “Kirk, that’s-”
“Don’t,” Lane warned. “It’s...not worth it.”
Perking his head up from his food, Kirk craned his neck to see the two of them. “Oh. You’re back. I’ve missed your pies, Ella. I hope Luke has rhubarb.”
“Kirk, we’re not...moving back here. We’re only gonna be here until tomorrow,” she said, head tilted in confusion.
He narrowed his eyes, then turned to stare closely at Jess, who leaned back against Ella slightly. “You just had to take her to Philadelphia with you.”
Jess was about to respond, before Ella jumped in again, tone vehement.
“Excuse me, Kirk, but I moved to Philadelphia on my own to go to grad school. Jess just happened to be there.”
“The hand of fate, huh?” Kirk asked, unphased. “What a beautiful thing.”
Jess snickered, eyeing Ella to gauge a response. Instead of retaliating, her jaw tensed and she turned her head to the kitchen window.
“Luke, we’re here!”
Raising his eyebrows, Luke reappeared from the kitchen. His sleeves were rolled up messily, his shirt splashed with grease. He didn’t look as though he’d been careful in the kitchen. A black baseball cap sat backwards on his head, the one he’d been wearing since he and Lorelai broke off their engagement. But Ella had heard, through her weekly phone calls with Lane, Lorelai and Christopher had divorced, breaking up once again. The constant romantic whiplash was beginning to make Ella dizzy.
“Oh. Hey, guys. How was the drive?” Luke asked.
“Well, I don’t know about Eleanor, but that huge ball of twine gets more interesting every time I pass it,” Jess deadpanned, arms crossed over his t-shirt, elbows on the counter.
Ella smiled thinly. “Jess is thrilled about the Spring Fling, if you couldn’t tell.”
“Yeah, I might’ve guessed. I mean, who could forget that Jethro Tull incident?” Luke replied.
She was about to respond, but instead Ella buried her nose in her sleeve again and sneezed.
“Bless you,” Jess said.
She sneezed again.
“Bless you,” he repeated, smirking.
A moment more, and she sneezed a third time.
“And one more for good measure,” Jess continued, increasingly smug. “Bless you.”
Luke furrowed his brows at Ella. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“The hay doesn’t agree with Rudolph,” Jess chimed in, smoothing a hand over Ella’s back.
Blinking the wateriness from her eyes again, she shot Jess a look. “Bite me.”
“Just like old times,” Luke grumbled, going over to the register when two meek customers came up to pay.
Catching her breath, Ella got down from the stool again. “I’m gonna go to Doose’s. Try to get something to handle this new reindeer look I’ve got going for me.”
“You want me to go with you?” Jess asked, almost hopefully.
“As much as I would love that, cutie, I think your existence would probably be a catalyst for Taylor’s flashbacks. I’ll be back in like ten minutes. I think you’ll survive.”
“That’s debatable,” he said.
She turned away and sneezed into her elbow yet again, growling under her breath in annoyance.
“Debatable for me and you both,” he added, smirking once more.
Flipping him off, she made her way to the front door, preparing to brave the wall of hay which was about to meet her eye-to-eye.
. . .
“Don’t touch!” Ella exclaimed, exchanging a flathead screwdriver for a phillip’s head on the counter next to her.
“Do you see me touching anything?” Jess shot back, rounding the counter to make his way to the dish pit.
She snorted a bitter laugh. “You were getting too close. I think you just coming in this register’s dance space would be enough to break it more.”
“If you make one more Dirty Dancing reference-”
“Need I remind you of the shower head?” she continued, ignoring his complaints.
He sighed heavily.
“Oh, please, remind him of the shower head,” Luke piped up from where he was wiping off the red tables.
“In January, the shower was leaking,” Ella began, straightening up from her spot tinkering with the cash register drawer.
“C’mon, Elle,” Jess moaned from the dish pit.
“Jess, both Luke and I are privy to the swan attack. This is far less humiliating, I promise.”
“Fine,” he said, turning the boiling hot tap back on. Only a few more mugs and he would finally be finished. He was careful to avoid any stray kitchen knives.
“The shower was leaking. I had class, but I said I would fix it when I got home. Because, somehow, Chris, Matthew, and Jess are all completely devoid of home improvement skills,” Ella said. “Jess tried, which was so sweet of him. But then the entire shower head and the faucet ended up coming off the wall. It took me four hours to get them back on.”
“Hence the register dance space,” Luke replied, biting back laughter.
“Exactly.”
“Hey, I fixed that toaster out there!” Jess shouted over the sound of the water.
“And it only took you six years to admit it,” Ella said.
“Shut up,” Jess retorted.
“There’s the charm,” she mocked. She pushed the small gold button, and the register drawer popped out silently. A bright smile crossed her face. “This might be the first time this hasn’t sounded like Janet Leigh since I started working here.”
She wondered in the back of her mind why Luke hadn’t fixed the cash register sooner. It was antique; maybe he thought a screeching drawer just came with the territory. Or, maybe it was because nearly every single repair he had done in the past few years was on either the Gilmore house or the Dragonfly Inn.
“I told you guys you didn’t have to work,” Luke said, rolling his eyes guiltily. He began flipping the chairs up onto the tables, stuffing his damp rag into his apron.
“For the last time, we wanted to!” Jess called from the back, wiping his hands on a stained dish towel as he finished up with the mugs.
“Well, you’ve done enough. I can finish closing. Go see the Spring Fling.” Luke came over and took the screwdrivers from Ella’s hand, putting them back in his toolbox and shutting it with a snap! before she could protest.
“Oh, yes, it’s bound to get wild out there in the hay bale maze,” Ella quipped, going to grab her coat from the rack with Jess following behind.
“You’re tellin’ me. Just go see it. Taylor certainly spent enough on it.” Luke went back to the tables, upturning the chairs rhythmically, as he had for so many nights and so many years, wearing the same thing.
“We’ll be back before midnight,” Ella said, shrugging on her leather jacket and tugging her long hair, half-up, half-down, out from beneath the collar.
“And, now that we’re grown up, we can go get involved with as many ritual cults as we want while we’re out,” Jess added, grabbing Ella’s hand.
“Don’t mention that in the deposition tomorrow,” Luke warned.
“It’s good you said something. Otherwise, I definitely would have mentioned it,” Jess shot back smugly.
As they emerged into the evening, the stars were just beginning to appear, Luke having closed up early at around eight o’clock. Ella looked around, trying to see any other way into the maze besides the opening just in front of Luke’s. She’d thought about popping into her old house, surprising Fiona and Adam after school. But, she’d gotten busy with the dinner shift and could see no physical way to get there in the dim light of the twinkly strings somewhere beyond the maze.
“How the hell do they pay for stuff like this?” Jess asked as they began strolling through the maze.
“Beats me,” Ella replied, shaking her head. “This place makes no economic sense. I stopped guessing a long time ago, my friend.”
He hummed, eyes roaming over the seemingly endless yellow straw. “Tax fraud, you think?”
“I wouldn’t put it past Taylor,” Ella said, smirking.
“Oh, now how could you accuse a sweet old man like that of such a crime?” he asked, feigning shock.
She shrugged, grinning. “Since he conveniently ‘lost’ the money for the bridge renovations and we had to start the whole fundraiser over again.”
“Y’know I was the one who took that money, right?” Jess asked, thinking back to his first two weeks in Stars Hollow.
“No, I meant the first time. I was like eleven,” she explained, feeling a pleasant night time breeze ghost through her hair.
“What?” Jess chirped. “It happened before?”
“Yeah, and Taylor kept saying someone stole it. But I had a sneaking suspicion it was an inside job.”
Breathing deeply, she could smell nothing but the hay. It seemed odd, considering the Spring Fling usually had booths with caramel apples and popcorn and all other sorts of junk. But, she was also just glad she could breathe through her nose again with the help of the allergy medicine she’d picked up at Doose’s, though her eyes were still a bit itchy.
“How very Watergate.”
“I’m telling you,” Ella insisted, only half-joking, “Taylor could be an evil genius for all we know.”
“It would explain a lot,” Jess agreed, nodding. They’d taken many turns, and he figured they must be nearing the end. The carnival in town square was what he remembered as the main event.
“Yes, all the sweater vests would be perfect for establishing a mild-mannered cover,” she continued, speaking with her free hand.
“Well, with that logic, Chris is also an evil mastermind,” Jess pointed out.
Ella pursed her lips in thought for a moment. “I think Chris is probably more of a Jekyll and Hyde situation.”
“I just love how much faith you have in humanity,” he smiled, pressing a kiss to her hair.
She laughed, and was about to retort, when they turned a corner and she almost ran straight into Lorelai. Her stomach did a quick flip, and her hand tightened slightly on Jess’s. But then, her old instincts kicked in, and she plastered a small, polite smile on her lips. On Lorelai’s right side, Rory stood hand-in-hand with some blonde guy.
“Oh, hey!” Lorelai greeted them brightly, looking between them. “I didn’t know you were in town.”
“Only for today and tomorrow. Just taking care of some stuff, y’know?” Ella said, unsure of whether Lorelai would be aware of the custody battle. Then, she turned to Rory. “What about you guys?”
“Visiting. We just had to come down for the Spring Fling,” Rory explained. She turned to the man at her side, gesturing between him and the two of them. “This is my boyfriend, Logan.”
“Oh, hi,” Ella said, shaking Logan’s hand.
“It’s a pleasure,” he grinned slyly, one dimple on his left cheek. “Strong handshake.”
“That’s what I’m famous for,” she replied. “I’m Ella.” Tilting her head to Jess, she broke hands with Logan. “And that’s Jess.”
“Hey,” Jess said shortly, also shaking Logan’s hand.
Logan’s smile didn’t even falter in the wake of Jess’s tight demeanor. “Nice to meet you, Jess.”
“So, how about this hay bale maze? Gives you Labyrinth vibes, doesn’t it?” Lorelai asked, smiling warmly.
“Yeah. All that’s missing is Bowie,” Ella agreed, nodding.
Intertwining their fingers again, Jess leaned into Ella’s side slightly against the chilly spring breeze.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing him in that costume,” Lorelai continued.
“Agreed,” Rory chimed in.
It occurred to Ella how long it had been since they had seen each other. Rory’s hair was longer and straighter, with side bangs and a redder tone. And her clothes seemed different, as well. Kate Spade and Coach and other brands Ella couldn’t have named. As far as first impressions went, she couldn’t quite figure out Logan. His smirk seemed constant, but not genuine like Jess’s. It wasn’t endearing, as though he were about to laugh at a private joke. Instead, it was almost smarmy. She wondered in the back of her mind what he was trying to sell her. Seeing Lorelai, though, was welcome. Images of movie nights and sleepovers and quiet afternoons reading flashed across her memory. Ella could recognize Lorelai just fine in the memories; Rory was not as easy.
“Not sure it’s worth it for how long we’ve been wandering around, though,” Lorelai added. Ella could see new, blonde-ish highlights in her hair. A pang of guilt hit her; with as much Lorelai had done for her, she should’ve checked in more. Even if she and Luke were still, inexplicably, on the outs.
Jess furrowed his brows. “What? I thought we were near the end.”
“Far from it,” Rory said.
“What about the caramel apple stand and stuff?” Ella asked.
“The budget wouldn’t allow it. Not after Taylor bought all the hay in Connecticut,” Lorelai said, gesturing to the maze around them. “This is it.”
Ella scoffed, shaking her head. “I’ll say it again. Evil mastermind.”
“What?” Logan asked, laughing.
Before she could answer, Ella’s nose began to tickle and she caught another sneeze in the crook of her elbow.
“Gesundheit!” Lorelai exclaimed.
“Well,” Jess began, looking between Ella and the other three, “we should probably start making our way to the other side. Seems like sneezy’s allergy medicine is wearing off.”
“Anyone who starts naming the other six dwarves will be in grave danger,” Ella warned, sniffling and blinking harshly.
They bid each other goodbye and were about to part ways when Rory suddenly spun around and called Ella’s name.
“Yeah?” Ella asked.
“Do you wanna maybe...go to lunch at Weston’s tomorrow? If you’re still gonna be in town,” Rory offered, her voice soft and hopeful. Her blue eyes were large in the moonlight.
Ella blew out a breath, considering it for only a moment. “Sure. Meet you at noon, alright?”
Rory nodded, and was soon whisked away again by Lorelai and Logan. They turned a corner and were masked by the hay.
. . .
She had never been to the Hartford courthouse, and it shocked her how much the place smelled like a dentist’s office. Chilly and plasticy and devoid of all human feeling. Painted in white with mahogany accents and bright lights, the building had supposedly been standing since before the Salem witch trials. Or so the plaque on the front of the red brick structure read. The minute hand on her watch ticked on silently, as nine o’clock rolled around. Ella had tried sketching, but couldn’t keep her focus on the portrait of her grandmother surrounded by sunflowers. Jess was halfway through a worn Bukowski volume, scribbling penciled notes in the margins, despite the faded writing already there. Ella’s head rested gently on his shoulder, dozing. Neither of them had slept especially well, nervous over the deposition. And neither of them were willing to take Luke’s bed again, and had squeezed onto the old brown couch. They considered the old twin bed, but decided falling off wasn’t worth it.
Ella was nearly asleep, her sketchbook shut and stuffed into her purse next to her, when she felt Jess shifting beneath her. His form tightened, and his breathing had become labored. Immediately, Ella’s eyes shot open, as she recognized the noise. She turned to find the novel shaking in his hands, his eyes wide and watery as his breathing began to pick up.
“Whoa, Jess, hey,” she began calmly, taking the book from his hands and placing it absently on the bench behind her. She faced him fully and reached out, but then hesitated. “Can I touch you?”
He swallowed dryly, trying to fight the tears blurring his vision. One second, he had been underlining a sentence; the next, his entire being became rigid and his heart was pounding. Not long after, he felt his throat tightening. Harsh shivers rolled through his body. He simply couldn’t control his erratic breathing.
Then, his eyes flitted to her face, the crease between her brows, and he nodded slightly.
“Okay,” she replied. Grabbing his wrist with a gentle hand, she brought his palm to her chest, the fabric of her blouse soft beneath his fingers. “Just breathe with me, cutie. Everything will be fine.”
“Pretty optimistic, Stevens,” he grumbled breathlessly, raising a doubtful eyebrow.
“Desperate times, Mariano. C’mon, just breathe with me,” she said softly, breathing in a long breath through her nose, exhaling out her mouth.
Beneath his hand, he could feel the rise and fall of her chest. Though he felt a little silly, he focused on the earnestness in her face. A few pedestrians passed by them, tossing uncertain glances their way, but Ella paid them absolutely no mind. She only focused on Jess. His cheeks were flushed as he ran his free hand over his mouth, nodding at her again as he finally began to mimic her breaths. Air hitching in his throat, he had to try more than a few times to steady himself.
“Good job, James Dean,” she smiled, watching him eventually begin to relax. His cheeks were glistening in the fluorescent light, and she wiped them dry with her thumb. “You okay? I can find you some water.”
“I’m pretty sure all they have here is burnt coffee,” he said, voice still uneven. The stench of stale coffee permeating the air in the whole building only added to the dentist office vibe.
She gave a breathy chuckle. “Hey, anything’s possible. My powers of persuasion are pretty strong.”
“I’m fine,” he insisted, averting his eyes from her. His cheeks burned hotly.
“Hey,” she said, tone serious once again, as she placed a hand on the back of his neck, “are you sure? If you can’t do the deposition, you can just write something down. I’m sure I could just go in.”
“No, I’m fine,” he said, eyes widening emphatically. “Don’t worry, Daria.”
“Impossible,” Ella said, dropping her hand from his neck and intertwining their fingers instead.
Jess cleared his throat. She saw his eyes flicker nervously over to the door of the room Luke had disappeared into over an hour earlier. Jess almost raised a hand to run through his hair, but then stopped as he remembered they were supposed to look professional in front of the lawyers. He felt fidgety and anxious.
“You’ll do fine, cutie,” she told him.
He faced her again, trying to force a confident smirk on his face. But he couldn’t bring himself to. “I know, just...like you said. What if he loses her? Or if-”
“‘You’ll never get anywhere if you go about what-iffing like that,’” she interjected.
He stared at her curiously for a moment before he ventured a guess. “Chuck Palahniuk?”
“Roald Dahl,” she answered.
“Huh,” he chirped indifferently.
Her eyes lingered on his distracted expression, watching his gaze be drawn again to the door to the deposition. He pursed his lips, a wistful, guarded look.
“Jess,” she started warily, her voice a sigh, “did you ever think about seeing someone? I mean, is this only the second time-”
“Can we please not talk about this, Doctor Laura?” he snapped quietly. Not unkindly, simply impatient. Ella hadn’t previously realized just how nervous he was for the deposition, considering how neutrally he’d reacted when she’d first told him about it.
She sighed again through her nose, jaw tensing. But she reminded herself where they were, and who they were. She told herself not to push too hard, not to worry about him getting scared and running off again. But still, a familiar fear threatened to rise in her throat. She swallowed thickly, then gave a slow nod. She pressed a quick kiss to the back of his hand and disentangled their fingers.
“Okay, James Dean,” she said flatly, handing him back his book. “To be continued.”
“Thank you,” he replied, flashing her a weak, half-hearted smile.
She tried to quiet the uneasiness whispering in her mind.
. . .
Weston’s looked much the same. The outdoor tables were adorned with vases of gerber daisies, fluttering in the light breeze. Bright sunlight warmed up the afternoon. Rory came back to the table with a tall coffee in one hand and a tea in the other. A tin of pound cake sat in between them on the frilly lace tablecloth, two forks beside it. Back in her plain purple dress and leather jacket, Ella felt more comfortable. And the judge had, thankfully, ruled in favor of Luke. Ella’s heart was alight with joy at just the thought of the verdict.
But an odd sense of deja-vu filled her. After Saturdays swimming in the Stars Hollow Community Pool, she and her father would come to the bakery, sunburnt and exhausted. She would get an apple tart and he would get a slice of chocolate satin pie. Just the two of them while her mother and brothers were at home playing board games. It had been their place, a father and a daughter, before everything fell apart. Her mind wandered to Jake for only a moment, wondering where he was and what he was doing. She wondered if he ever remembered their post-pool bakery visits, sitting outside with towels wrapped around them, damp bathing suits sticking to their bodies.
But then Taylor rode by, in the front seat on a bus of tourists, blasting his words through a megaphone. She snapped out of it. Offering a grateful smile to Rory, she took a sip of her tea. “Really, Rory, you didn’t have to get my tea.”
Rory waved a dismissive hand as she sat down. “It’s fine, Ella. Consider it making up for those last few birthdays when I wasn’t there to force presents on you.”
Ella smirked through a chuckle. “Okay. Thank you.”
“So,” Rory began, leaning in, conspiratory. “Tell me everything.”
“Well,” Ella said, shrugging and glancing over to her left. She forgot that her vision of the lush green square would be obscured by the wall of dry yellow hay. Having dosed up again on allergy medicine, she was glad to soon be leaving. She snickered under her breath, then turned back to Rory. She had a small smile on her pink lips. For a moment, Ella saw her as she had when they were teenagers. Bookish and shy, similar to Jess in a lot of ways. “I’m pretty busy with grad school. My students are all so fucking smart though, so it’s honestly not all that hard getting things to stick with them.”
“Yeah, Lane told me you graduated early,” Rory nodded along, almost jealous.
“Just took a bunch of summer classes and stuff. Luke gave me so much time to study. I wouldn’t have been able to do it otherwise,” Ella shrugged, spinning the tea mug around as she spoke.
“And how’s living with Jess? Above the publishing company, right? Is it Truncheon? I can’t remember. It seems like so long since Luke told me about it,” Rory said, giggling through her words.
Ella’s smile widened. “Yeah, Truncheon. They sell books and local art. Even some of mine, actually. But we live with Chris and Matthew, Jess’s partners, above the store. They’re...interesting. Matthew can do these crazy, Good Will Hunting math problems in his head. And Chris has, like, forty Red Bulls worth of energy everyday, but he hardly ever drinks caffeine. He just has a natural, endless supply. Kinda reminds me of your mom.”
“Sounds eventful,” Rory chimed in.
“That it is. But...it’s really fun. The city...it’s so lively. Everyday I walk outside and it’s a whole new place,” Ella said, blushing slightly at the sentimental words as she spoke them. But it was true. Returning to Stars Hollow always reminded her how much she enjoyed Philly. “But, what about you? Let’s hear about this Logan character.”
“Oh,” Rory began, looking down at her drink. “He’s good. We’re good. He’s really smart and we have a lot in common. And he’s really well-traveled. We’re great. He’s great.”
Eyes widening marginally, suspiciously, Ella nodded at Rory’s babbling. “So, you’re great, I hear. Alright. He makes you happy?”
“He does,” Rory answered, taking a sip of her coffee. Then, after a moment of pause: “It’s just…”
“What’s up, Ror?” Ella asked softly, furrowing her brows. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
Rory finally met her eyes again. “It’s just...I got offered this job at a newspaper in Rhode Island. And it’s solid and steady. My mom thinks I should take it.”
“That’s awesome, Rory! You’re gonna be at the Washington Post before we know it!” Ella exclaimed.
Rory offered her a weak smile. “Yeah, but, I also applied for this big scholarship. Only like five people get it every year. But it could be huge, and Logan thinks I could go for it. But, he also just lost about a million dollars and quit his job at his father’s company.”
“Hm,” Ella hummed, trying to keep her face expressionless as Rory continued. They were nowhere near close enough anymore for Ella to criticize her boyfriend.
“And then, the other day, I found this ring...”
“Oh, fuck,” Ella said, leaning back in her chair.
“Yeah,” Rory sighed. “And I have no idea what to do. I don’t know when he’s gonna ask me, if he’s gonna ask me, if he’s gonna want to follow me to Rhode Island, and...I mean, do you wanna spend the rest of your life with Jess?”
Taken aback by the question, Ella bit the inside of her cheek and paused. “Um...I...I hardly believed in love before I met Jess. Sometimes change doesn’t happen all at once. But...I mean...I would always rather be with him than not with him. If that means I want to spend the rest of my life with him…then, yeah. I do.”
Rory tucked her hair behind both her ears, shrugging. “I guess it’s not the same type of thing. I mean, you’ve been the Catherine to his Heathcliff forever.”
“Nothing’s perfect, though, Ror,” Ella said. She thought back to a few hours earlier in the courthouse, Jess’s stony expression. She could practically see the scowl he was sporting back the diner, where she’d find him after Weston’s to drive back home. “I mean, marrying someone doesn’t solve everything. Living together doesn’t solve everything. Jess and I argue. We fight.”
“Yeah, I think we all remember what it was like when you two worked at the diner together,” Rory scoffed nostalgically.
Ella snorted a laugh. “Believe me, I know. Jess and I don’t love each other because it’s easy. We don’t communicate the best sometimes. He’s not the chattiest, if you remember. And I’m not the most flexible. He turns the heat up in the apartment way too high. And, sometimes, I swear he’s got the worst taste. But we promised each other a long time ago we would always try for each other. That’s all it is. We try for each other.”
“You sound like a Nicholas Sparks novel,” Rory said, giggling once more.
“I do not!” Ella exclaimed, a blush creeping further up her skin.
“Oh, really?” Rory asked doubtfully. “Tell me what you love about him, then. Tell me the little details about the man who melted the icy Ella Stevens.”
Ella snorted again, shaking her head. “It wasn’t some sexist Taming of the Shrew situation. He’s just...he’s my best friend. That’s it.”
“Come on, you have to get back to Philly soon, don’t you? Humor me for the sake of this advice session,” Rory continued.
Rolling her eyes and groaning dramatically, Ella shifted in her seat and sighed. “Fine. For old time’s sake, Rory. He...he’s such a good writer. He writes like nothing I’ve ever read before. It’s thoughtful and deep and...I don’t know. He does that thing where he bites his lip when he’s nervous. And he’s probably the biggest romantic I’ve ever met. I used to think it was absurd, but now it’s just cute. He rubs circles on my back sometimes, for no reason. He just…always likes to be touching. And, as much as that man loves words, it’s the actions. He doesn’t need to say something for me to know...I guess. He’ll show me instead. Does that make sense?”
After a moment of gaping, Rory burst out in laughter. “I knew it was serious. I didn’t know it was a Tennyson poem.”
“Alright, alright, enough,” Ella grumbled in embarrassment. “The point is: do you want to be with Logan for the rest of your life?”
Rory’s face fell slightly, and she could only manage a non-committal shrug.
As the breeze blew past them again, and Ella watched Rory’s expression falter, she felt her stomach fill with nerves. She hadn’t realized it before, quite how committed she was. When she imagined her life, Jess was always there. It wasn’t even a question. She didn’t know exactly when she’d decided he would be a permanent fixture, if he wanted. But apparently she had. And no matter how frustrated she was with his refusal to talk about his panic attacks, or the anxiety which had been following him for, perhaps, years, it didn’t matter. It had been a tough trip for him. She just wanted to get back to him, to make sure he was alright. To see if he was feeling better.

Boston Boys [Part Ten]
Summary: Amidst another bank robbery, Chris and Elsa make plans to get away; John makes a confession to Aurelie. Pairing: Chris Evans x OFC, John Krasinski x OFC Word Count: 1938 Chapter Warnings: Memories of bank robbery and hostage situation, angst, trauma. Square Filled: The entire series (well, bits and pieces of it) will fill my Crossover square for @marvelfluffbingo. A/N: This story contains a character who lost her hearing as she got older. I do work closely and regularly with the D/deaf community (I’m a sign language interpreter), but my own hearing problems do not involve significant hearing loss. It is not my intention to offend anyone, only to bring in a character with a quality I don’t see often in other fics. If you have questions about her, feel free to ask :)
Boston Boys Masterlist
Just as Elsa was beginning to think summer might never come to Boston, her semester ended and all she had to do was work at the bank. She had been seeing Chris for a couple of months now. The memory of the bank robbery was growing more and more distant. All in all, life wasn’t so bad.
She was laying in the bed in Chris’s new apartment -- one he had secured only a few weeks ago. Elsa had helped him pick out the furnishings and decor; she loved playing house with Chris.
Who was she kidding at this point? The thing she loved the most was being with Chris. She loved Chris. She was in love with Chris.
He came back to the bed with a pint of ice cream and two spoons. Elsa grinned and pulled the sheet up under her arms before accepting one of the spoons from him. Chris set the lid on the nightstand, then sidled up next to Elsa. They dug into the ice cream together. Chris hit the clicker to turn on the TV, and the sounds of the evening news filled the bedroom.
“What are you gonna do with your summer, beautiful?”
Elsa shrugged. “You mean besides spending time with you? Work the bank. Visit home, I guess. Nothing exciting.”
“Let’s take a vacation.” He swallowed a spoonful of ice cream. “Seb’s back up to par, he can cover for me at the shop for a while. We could stop and visit your family, then go up to Maine for a little coastal getaway.”
“You want to meet my family?” Elsa asked. That wasn’t at all what she was expecting.
“I wanna meet your family,” Chris confirmed, taking the spoon from her and setting it to the side with his spoon and the ice cream. “Is that too serious?”
Elsa shook her head. “No. I think I’m pretty serious about you. I know I am, actually. You came into my life at a really horrible time --”
“... made away with over a hundred thousand dollars. The robbers were described as three men and one woman by their voices, though they were wearing masks, hoodies, and gloves, so no other identifying factors were noted. Investigators believe that this may be the same group who robbed Boston Private and took a hostage several months ago.”
That horrible time Elsa had been ready to reference and forget about was suddenly the only thing she could think about. She flashed back to the other teller giving her up as the one with the code for the safe that day, to being yelled at and hit and taken away into that van. Her breath came in short gasps and she reached for Chris’s hand.
“Hey, hey -- breathe, Elsa. Breathe. C’mon.”
Chris encouraged her over and over to breathe, but she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t get past the hyperventilating and the sobbing. Chris pulled her into his lap, stroking her hair and waiting the reaction out. When she finally began to calm, he clicked the mute button, then wiped away the tear stains from her cheeks.
“I’m sorry, Els,” he apologized, “I should have been paying more attention to what was on the news.”
“It’s not your fault,” Elsa assured.
Chris smoothed her hair away from her face. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“I just -- they’re still out there, Chris. They still know where I live and they still are doing this to other people. What if the police want to ask me more questions with this new investigation? I want to put it all behind me. I thought I had. I finished the semester with good grades, despite everything. I found you, and things are going so well. Now all of this is slammed back in my face.”
The tears began again. Chris leaned her against his chest and kissed the top of her head. “Let’s go away, all right? We’ll go visit your family, we’ll get away to Maine. I’ll plan everything.”
Elsa nodded against his chest. Sniffling back the tears, she tipped her head up to Chris. When he kissed her softly, Elsa pulled the kiss into more passionate depths. Whatever she could to replace the pain with pleasure.
In a different part of Boston, Aurelie was getting home from a long hospital shift. Though no serious cases had come though, a summer virus had filled the rooms non-stop, it seemed. She had stayed a few extra hours to deal with the overflow before coming home.
She dropped her bag at the front door, then set her cochlear implant on the table by the door, as she usually did, and kicked her shoes off. Her phone buzzed in her pocket; as much as she wanted to ignore it, the possibility of being called back to the hospital when she was needed kept her from letting the call go to voicemail.
I’m at your front door. I would knock, but I know you probably wouldn’t hear me right now.
John’s text message was enough to pull a smile to her face. Aurelie tossed her phone to the side, then opened her front door and threw her arms around his neck, kissing him almost before he was ready. He smiled against her mouth and wrapped his arms around her middle, pulling her off the ground and carrying her into the apartment before shutting the door behind him.
When John set her down, Aurelie reached for her implant, but he put a hand over hers. She frowned and asked him what was up.
“I want to tell you something.” He said the words while also fumbling through signing what he was trying to say. With a deep breath, he continued. “I’ve been learning a little so I can tell you an important thing in a way that’s important to you. I love you, Aurelie.”
He even remembered her name sign. With tears in her eyes, Aurelie nodded. She had known when they accepted each other, despite the family backgrounds, that love would come -- and she had waited with great anticipation for this day. She never could have imagined, though, that John would have made the moment so special. So, without speaking, Aurelie signed her reply.
“I love you, too.”
Chris hadn’t dragged his feet on planning their vacation, and by mid-June, Elsa was preparing to head to New York for a few days alone with her family before Chris followed after finishing his week at the barber shop.
They had said their goodbyes at her apartment that morning before Chris went to work, but Elsa had a surprise for him for his birthday, coming up in a couple of days. He wouldn’t arrive in New York until the day after his birthday, but she couldn’t wait. She stopped at the jeweler to pick up the gift, then made time to stop at the shop before she took a cab to Logan.
The bell over the door rang when she entered the shop, and six faces turned to look at Elsa. She spotted Chris immediately and, after giving everyone else a shy little wave, made way over to his chair.
“Hey,” she greeted, kissing his cheek, “I was hoping to catch you between clients.”
Chris kissed her quickly, then took her by the elbow and turned her to the rest of the shop crew. He made quick introductions, then hurried her out of the shop to the front sidewalk.
“This was a good surprise,” he said, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her again.
Elsa chuckled. “I’ve never seen you this nervous.”
“Well, ya know, I’ve told them I’m seeing someone, but it’s been a long time since I’ve introduced someone to my family. I was caught off guard is all.”
“That makes sense. I’m sorry to put you in a bad position.”
“No, no,” Chris assured, shaking his head adamantly, holding her hands up to his lips and kissing her knuckles. “I was nervous, is all. In a good way. I’m glad you were the one to break the cycle.”
Elsa grinned and pulled the small box from her bag and gave it to him. “I had a good reason for stopping by, promise. I know it’s not your birthday yet, but I was too excited to wait to give you your gift. Happy birthday, Chris.”
He ran his hand over the smooth lid of the box, then leaned down to kiss her. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Open it!”
Chris grinned too and tucked the lid underneath the box. He raised his brow at the all-black watch set inside. Elsa took it out for him and turned the watch so he could see behind the watch face.
“‘Trust the timing’,” he read out loud. He smiled to himself; a fitting statement for them. “This is perfect, Elsa. It’s amazing. You didn’t have to do this, you know.”
“I know that, but I saved up. I wanted to do this for you.”
Chris cupped her face and kissed her again, softly. “Will you take this with you to New York? I want to take you out when I get there, and I don’t want to chance forgetting this, so I can wear it.”
Elsa nodded and helped him put the watch back in the box before putting it back in her bag. They shared a couple more kisses, then Chris hailed her a cab to take her to the airport. Elsa smiled to herself as the yellow car drove away; she couldn’t wait to be home with Chris and her family.
Chris stood on the sidewalk for a few minutes after Elsa left, smoking a cigarette and preparing himself for the reaction of the crew. He had lit a second cigarette, in an effort to delay the inevitable, when the bell over the shop door rang again.
“Got a light?”
He dug the lighter from his pocket and leaned over to light Scarlett’s cigarette. Things were quiet for about a minute, and then she spoke.
“The rest of them didn’t recognize her, and I’m not going to say anything. They all like her -- what they got from the thirty seconds before you rushed her out.” Scarlett took a long drag from her cigarette. “I like her, too. I can see you do, and you should see how she lights up when she looks at you.”
Chris sighed, scratching at a spot above his eye with his thumb. “Scar …”
“What are you doing, Chris? What’s gonna happen when she finds out you were part of the team that traumatized her and changed her life forever? We scarred her, do you get that? And now you’re fucking her and she’s falling in love with you.”
“I’m not fucking her,” Chris rebutted. “I’m serious about her. Is that why you’re so pissed? Is it really about the robbery?”
Scarlett rolled her eyes. “Whatever feelings I thought I had left for you, Chris, were gone when you went MIA when Seb needed you. Who the fuck does that?” She shook her head and threw the butt of her cigarette in a puddle nearby. “It doesn’t matter, it’s passed. Seb’s forgiven you, so I guess I should, too. Just know that I’ve moved on from all of that. The problem now is what’s gonna happen when she finds out who you really are.”
Scarlett went back into the shop. Chris shoved his hands in his pockets; Scar wasn’t wrong. He had fucked up, in more ways than one. Then and there, he decided that before they came back to Boston from Maine, he would tell Elsa the truth.

Summary: “It went without saying that getting bitten by a radioactive spider had its perks.
But apparently a cure for the common cold wasn’t one of them.”
-
College final exam season leaves Peter sick with a nasty cold, and on his wonderful girlfriend Michelle's first day of her summer internship too. Now it's up to mama Pepper and little sis Morgan to nurse their favorite spiderling back to health.
A/N: This was intended to be a little drabble based on a post I saw (I can’t find it for the life of me but once I do I’ll reblog it asap) but it ended up being a 5k+ fic of sweet sick Peter and his mess of a family. I couldn’t help it I love them all too much. You can read it on Ao3 or under the cut! Whatever what works for you!
Spider-Man can, in fact, catch a cold. This was something that Peter was surprised, yet annoyed to discover. Before the bite, Peter was a sickly, asthmatic, all around fragile kid, and while it wasn’t something that he was exactly confident about he never let it crush his spirit. However, that didn’t mean that as soon as the spider bite rid his body of all his past ailments Peter wasn’t overjoyed. He could finally run a mile without having to stop a quarter of the way through or eat a PB&J without having to instantly call an ambulance. It went without saying that getting bitten by a radioactive spider had its perks.
But apparently a cure for the common cold wasn’t one of them.
He and Mr. Stark discovered this about a year after he was bitten when he had come down with a nasty case of bronchitis that had him hacking all over the compound for four days. Since then Peter was bound to catch a bug here and there, much like he used to before the bite just less severe. It was harder for him to catch things as well, his immune system was usually a force to be reckoned with, unless for any reason Peter was not at “peak Spidey performance” as Mr. Stark would say.
Which leads us to now, a mere 24 hours after the last final exam of his junior year at Columbia, Peter was laid in bed suffering through what he would consider the nastiest cold he’d ever had.
It was barely after sunrise, the clock reading a taunting 5:30, and Peter doing everything he could not to sneeze. With deep, even, wheezy, breaths, the spider-boy was using all his strength to keep the sneeze at bay for one reason. MJ. His lovely, wonderful, amazing Michelle who was starting her first day of her summer internship at nine and would massacre Peter if he woke her up before her alarm. The girl loved her sleep, and Peter would be damned if he deprived her of it.
Think of anything else Peter, literally anything. Remember that big biker guy you helped on patrol the other week? He was pretty nice…oh god it iiihhtches…no, enough Peter, biker guy. Right he had that cool jacket with the patches, I bet I could pull off a leather jacket. Maybe put a spidey patch on the back? Fun…cool…really gotta sneeze. Ugh, FUCK! Okay, okay maybe if you just do that pinch-y sneeze, like Ned and Natasha do…heh imagine Ned knowing he had the same sneeze as Black Widow, he’d flip. Ehh..fuhhhhuck okay thats it, pinch-y sneeze please don’t fail me.
With a shaky hand Peter pinches his nose between his thumb and his forefinger, the motion instantly making his nose tickle more and within seconds Peter was attempting, and failing, to stifle his sneeze.
And it failed hard.
The sneeze was stronger than it seemed and instead of being held back and becoming a noiseless stifle, it came out louder than it should have as it scraped the back of his throat, causing barking coughs to escape as well.
Well everyone, bid him farewell, this will be the day that Peter Parker meets his untimely demise. He instantly feels MJ stir against him with a groan. She was up, oh god sound the alarm she was awake.
“P’ter? That you?” She slurs, sleep lacing her voice.
“Umb, yeah. Sorry embjay I didn’d mbean to sndeeze.” God how he wished his could blow his nose, but he was not going to poke the bear any further.
It was quiet for a moment, Peter knew that he was in danger. MJ was plotting how she was going to murder him and it was only a matter of time before she-
“You feeling okay, baby?” Her angelic voice rings as she turns to face him on the bed. “You sound terrible.”
It was like music to Peter’s ears. He would live to see another day! He was almost shocked, she didn’t even pepper in the classic “loser” nickname. She was concerned. Wait, did he really sound that bad? Should he be concerned?
Peter clears his throat before responding. “I-I thingk I’mb combing down with sombthing. I’mb sorry I’ll try to be quieter.” A wet sniffle concludes his sentence. Damn it he really wants a tissue.
Almost as if MJ could read minds, she places a soft white Kleenex into his hand. “Blow your nose, Pete. I’m gonna go get the humidifier, you’re way too congested.”
“O-Oh, okay. Thangk you Emmby.” He uses her absence to sit up a little and expel the nasty gunk from his sinuses. He still can’t completely breathe, but it’s better than it was before. MJ comes back into the room moments later, carrying the chunky machine. The water inside of it sloshes a bit as she set’s it on Peter’s bedside table but as soon as she plugs it into the wall, a warm soft mist starts flowing from its lid. Peter can’t tell a difference now, but he knows it’ll make a difference the longer it runs.
Satisfied with how the humidifier is working, Michelle sits beside Peter on the bed and looks at him quizzically. “How’d you get so sick?” She questions, her fingertips reaching to brush Peter’s bed head away from his eyes. His forehead moderately warm, but it doesn’t feel like anything that provokes worry.
He hums at her soft touch but shrugs his shoulders at her question. “Don’t kdnow,” He presses the tissue to his nose as it starts running, the humidifier must be working. “I felt fidne yesterday. Mbaybe kinda tired but ndot sick.”
“You know what it probably is?” Michelle says. “All those nights up late studying, not to mention all that trash food you ate-“
“What is this, mbake fun of your poor sick boyfriend day?” He gives a wet coughs for emphasis, and because he really needed to cough.
“Sorry sicky,” She giggled. “what I’m saying is that you had a long hard week and you weren’t exactly taking the best care of yourself. No shame in it, I mean, it happens to everyone but I think your body is so used to you eating well and exercising often that as soon as you stopped your immune system freaked out.
Clearing his throat, Peter nods. “I guess that mbakes sense.” He looks down with a sigh, thinking of all the things he was scheduled to do today. “I better call Todny and tell him I can’t combe in to the lab.” He sighs and reaches for his phone but MJ intercepts.
“First you’re going to go back to sleep until a reasonable hour. It’s almost 6 a.m. Parker, and my alarm goes off at 8, so I’d like a few more hours of rest.” She jabs, pulling the covers up to his chin and kissing him softly on the cheek. “And you definitely need the beauty sleep.”
Peter chuckles at that, which only lead to more hacking coughs. MJ softly pats his back until the coughs subside. With a tsk she tucks him into bed once more before rounding the bed to lay back down on her side. “Rest, I’ll let you know when I’m about to head to work.”
With his eyes closed and his breathing only slightly less congested, thank you humidifier, he smiles contently. “Thank you Emmby, love you.”
“Love you too, snotty.”
Peter wakes again to a kiss on the forehead and the scent of strong perfume making his nose tickle. Before he even opens his eyes, he curls in on himself and muffles three sneezes into his pillow. Ugh, gross. He opens his bleary eyes to see MJ smoothing out her work outfit in their full length mirror. She looks amazing as usual, Peter notes, but her perfume is strong. Or maybe he’s just way too sensitive, a super cold and super senses probably don’t mix well. Without warning, two more sneezes barrel out and he barely has time to cover them. With a groan he sniffles thickly and reaches for the tissue box conveniently placed on his bedside table. He get a warm and fuzzy feeling as he realizes MJ had put them there for him, as they weren't there when he had woken up earlier. It’s the little things. He blows his nose, which get’s MJ’s attention.
She glances over to him with a smile. “Good morning, again.”
“Good mbornding, you look ambazindg.” He rasps, a goofy smile painting his face.
MJ breathes out a laugh at her dopey boyfriend. “Thank you, dork. How’re you feeling?”
He snuggles deeper into the bed, closing his eyes again and coughing weakly. “Call a physiciand,” Peter jokes in a congested and bad British accent. He throws a hand over his forehead for good measure. “I believe it mbay be the plague.”
MJ snorts a laugh at her boy’s dramatics. “Okay, you sickly child king.”
Her heels clack against the hardwood floor of the bedroom as she steps over to where he lies in their bed. As she sits on the bed, her soft hand cups his forehead and then his cheek. “You’re soft.” He mumbles, leaning into her touch.
“And you are running a bit of a fever.” She rubs her thumb sweetly over his cheek before standing back up. She tells him to sit tight and goes to the bathroom to grab a digital thermometer. She returns to find him dozing so she gently brushes his hair back to get his attention. He lifts his eyes to see the thermometer in her hand and opens his mouth just wide enough that she can slip the device under his tongue. “Give that a minute.”
MJ walks out of the room a moment later and Peter hears running water from the kitchen. The thermometer beeps right before she reenters, ice water with a straw in hand. Peter didn’t realize until he saw it just how thirsty he was. He stares at her lovingly as she takes the thermometer from between his lips. “Are you a mbind reader?” He asks, only semi-joking as he sits up slightly to sip the water.
Michelle scoffs lightly. “You bet your ass I am.” She jokes looking down at the medical tool. “Hm, 100.8. Not horrendous but I don’t love it.” Once again she’s gone, this time to the bathroom where Peter hears more water running, making him want to take another sip of his water. He sighs as the cool drink soothes his dry throat. MJ strides back to the bed with a damp face towel folded in half. When she starts to dab Peter’s forehead with the cool cloth he can’t help the shuddering sigh that escapes him. She stops. “You alright?”
Her boyfriend just nods, opening his eyes to look up at her with a small smile. “Feels good. Cold.” He explains. She smiles back at him, taking the cup of water from his hands so he can lay back down. She continues to wipe his brow with the towel and doesn’t stop until a snore leaves his mouth. MJ can’t help the giggle that bubbles up, but to be fair she’s never heard Peter snore before and right now he was quite a sight to see. His hair was sticking up at all angles, even in his reclined position, his nose nearing a shade of bright red, and his mouth open just wide enough that the tiny snores were heard.
She couldn’t help but snap a quick picture to send to Tony.
MJ:

Old Man Stark:

MJ:
:P thanks T-Star
Old Man Stark:
Don’t call me T-Star.
Michelle pockets her phone and grabs her computer bag that’s packed and ready in the living room. Quickly she takes out a stray piece of paper and jots down a quick note for her boy just incase he wakes up alone.
Petey,
Had to get to the office (wish me luck lol) but Pepper and Morgan should be by soon. Please don’t die while I’m gone. I’ll be pissed if you do that. Wash your hands, blow your nose, and don’t leave used tissues on the bed that’s gross. Love you. Feel better.
-M
Satisfied, she leaves the note under the tissue box, gives him one last kiss on the forehead, and makes her way out the door. But not before sending Morgan that goofy picture of Peter.
MJ:
here
use this as blackmail
tell him you’ll post it on insta next time he says he won’t take you to mcdonalds
Mo Mo Stark:
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Peter wakes to his front door closing and whispering coming from the living room. He panics for a moment before realizing that the voices belonged to Pepper and Morgan. As the fan blows above him, he hears a piece of paper flutter next to him. With a shaky hand he grabs it and reads over the note that MJ had left for him. He cant help but blush, just at the thought of his girlfriend. He wonders how her first day is going. He misses her a lot. Then he realizes his fever must of gone up, as he definitely wasn’t this emotionally fragile when he had gone to sleep.
With a yawn, he sits up and swings his legs over the side of the bed and grabs the quilt at the end and wraps it around his around his shoulders. With a huff he slides off the bed and makes his way to the living room. He finds Pepper setting grocery bags down on the kitchen island and Morgan already situated in front of the TV, some YouTube vlog video playing over the speakers.
“Morgan Hope, turn that down before you wake your broth-“ Pepper stops when she notices Peter standing in the doorway. “Oh, afternoon sweetheart! Did Morgan wake you? I’m so sorry I told her to quiet down-“
“Pep, it’s okay, I actually woke up whend you guys walked ind.” He rasps, congestion still heavy in his horse voice.
“Oh honey you sound awful, come on now, on the couch. You shouldn’t be up.” Pepper says, guiding him with a hand on his back to the couch. Morgan scoots a bit to make room for her big brother.
“Hi, Dr. Mborgand, you brindg any of the good drugs today?” Peter jokes, making the girl roll her eyes.
“Mom, Peter says he on drugs. He needs to detox stat. Get me an IV with glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin B.” The youngest Stark states.
Her mother sighs as she returns to the kitchen. “Alright, that’s enough Discovery Life for you. Why can’t you just watch Disney Channel like a normal eleven year old.” Pepper mumbles as she starts taking items out of the grocery bags.
Peter and Morgan just giggle, which leads to a coughing fit from Peter. Morgan’s tiny hand pats his back as he hacks into his elbow, he murmurs an apology as the coughs taper off.
“You need to lay down Petey, and you need tissues.” Morgan articulates as she stands and looks around the apartment.
Clearing his throat, Peter points to the bedroom. “There should be sombe tissues by mby bed…if you could grab those that’d be ndice.”
Morgan nods confidently and makes her way to the bedroom. Seconds later she reemerges with the tissue box in hand and places them in the crook of Peter’s arm.
“Thangk you doctor.” Peter smiles, causing Morgan to smile in return.
“You’re welcome!” The girl returns to her spot on the couch and presses play on the video she was watching. It was vlog about makeup, Peter assumed, as the YouTuber was covered in a very impressive, glossy, look and was showing off makeup pallettes. Peter watches as the video cuts and suddenly the makeup artist is bare faced and begins to work on the look they had previewed in the intro.
Pepper chuckles as she approaches the couch, mug of hot tea with lemon and honey in hand. She hands the cup to Peter, who is drowsily watching the makeup being applied. “You don’t have to watch this you know.” Pepper whispers to him. “This is your apartment and you’re sick, turn on whatever you want.”
Taking a sip of the tea, humming as it soothes his sore-ish throat, Peter shakes his head. “Ndo, this is awesombe, look at how precise he is with the brush. Oh, thangks for the tea…also.” Pepper chuckles more, kissing the boy on the top of the head, and leaving him with Morgan to watch some internet celebrity do a perfect line with their liquid eyeliner.
Pepper had called May in the morning after hearing from Tony that Peter wasn't feeling well, knowing the boys aunt would have all the inside knowledge on how to care for a sick Peter. It wasn’t as if Pepper had never seen Peter sick, though. Since Tony had introduced them to each other way back before Morgan was even a thought, Peter had spent some sick days in the tower, the compound, and even one or two in the lake house. Yes, Pepper had seen a sick Peter Parker in her lifetime, however this was the first time she was his sole caretaker. However, after the quick call to the boy’s aunt, Pepper had a pretty good idea of how to care for the sick Spiderling.
“Oh for a cold?” May had responded. “Simple, grilled cheese and tomato soup for every meal, he’ll probably want to watch Parks and Rec all day, oh and he has Tony’s old MIT hoodie in his closet and he always wears it when he’s not feeling well.”
Pepper smiled at that. When Peter decided to stay in New York for college, for family and spider-y reasons, it was no secret that Tony had been a little disappointed. No, Tony hadn’t done anything special to get Peter into MIT, honestly because he didn’t have too. Peter’s grades and test scores were good enough on their own, but he still would have loved to have seen the kid at his alma mater. When Peter had told him of his college decision, scared out of his mind might he add, Tony just hugged and told him he was proud of him. Tony reassured the kid that where ever he went to school was fine by him and that he’d support him the whole way through. “I am going to need that MIT sweatshirt back” Tony had joked, waiting to be met by a “shut up Tony” or an eye roll, but instead he was met with tears— big fat ones that welled up in Peter’s eyes. Tony was quick to see he had messed up and it took about twenty minutes to reassure the boy that he didn't want the sweatshirt back and that “of course I still love you Peter”. Since then Peter has kept the garment close to him at all times, just incase Tony ever thought about taking it.
Pepper goes to Peter’s closet, instantly spotting the faded maroon hoodie and taking it off of the hanger. Both he and Morgan are still mesmerized by the YouTube video, but they glance up when Pepper walks over again. Peter’s eyes light up at the sight of the hoodie in her hands. He’s close to making grabby hands for it but she hands it to him first. He puts it on and settles back down onto the couch. “Thangk you Pep.”
“Keep it safe, can’t have Tony snatching it.” She jabs as she walks back to the kitchen to start the grilled cheese.
Peter, though thoroughly invested in the new makeup video Morgan put on, can’t help but doze off as the ambient sounds of his apartment lull him to sleep. He hears a shuffling on the couch next to him and opens one of his eyes, seeing Morgan giggling at him. “Can I braid your hair Petey?” She whispers. In true college kid fashion, Peter had let his hair grow out a little bit, and while it wasn’t long enough to braid it all together, Morgan liked to do tiny braids with tufts of his hair for fun.
Turning onto his side away from Morgan, giving her better access to his hair, Peter chuckles at his little sister. “Go for it Mborgie, mbake mbe beautiful.”
With a squeal of delight, the eleven year old Stark pulls tiny hair-ties out of her pocket and gets to work. Peter, who had always loved having his hair played with, lets the braiding put him right to sleep after only a few tiny braids were done.
If Morgan laughed at the snores that came from Peter moments later, she didn't tell him. He did let her braid half his head, anyway.
The rest of the day passes in a sleepy haze for Peter. He remembers waking up a few moments after falling asleep on the couch. Pepper helping him sit up and setting a tray of his favorite sick day meal in his lap. He had to hand it to Pepper, she made a mean grilled cheese soup combo. He finishes the sandwich and about half of the soup before he feels his eyes grow heavy again and the tray is taken from his lap.
“Go back to sleep, hon. Morgan and I are here if you need us.” Pepper reassures the boy, so Peter does.
The next time he wakes was when Morgan and Pepper we’re on their way out. He vaguely remembers sluggishly thanking them for staying with him and Pepper saying something about MJ being home in just a few minutes, but as soon as the apartment door closes Peter was out once more.
The final time he wakes up is to Michelle gently shaking his shoulder, attempting to wake him from his short slumber. His eyes open, but quickly close again as he stretches his whole body, somehow exhausted and sore from his long day of sleeping.
“Emmby, you back?” He asks, not yet opening his eyes again.
He hears her adorable laugh and his heart soars. “Yes, dork, it’s me. Wanna open those pretty eyes for me, Tiger?”
Obviously wanting to see his beautiful girlfriend, he opens his eyes again. MJ looks tired from her first day but extremely happy.
“Was it ambazing? Everythindg you could have hoped for?” He asks, nuzzling closer to her thigh, much like a cat.
She hums an affirmation, bringing her hand up to trace random shapes along his arm. “It was everything and more. Honestly I can see myself working there forever. It was…it was perfect.”
Peter smiles at that. MJ deserved the perfect job and more. “Babe, that fandtastic. I’m so happy for you.” He says horsely but sincerely. He moves closer to her, raising his head a bit to lay it on her lap. With the motion, one of Morgan’s many little braids in his hair make themselves apparent and Michelle can help but burst with laughter.
It causes Peter to jolt up in a sleepy state of panic. “What, what happended?” He asks sitting up slightly, eyes half closed but alert.
She reaches up to ruffle the tiny braids that cover the right side of his head. “What is this? Did Morgan just learn how to fishtail braid because these are honestly kinda good.” She inspects the braids as Peter’s cheeks blush.
He smiles, coughing slightly and gently shaking his head so the braids flop around. That gets another laugh from MJ. “Mby sisters pretty talendted, huh?”
MJ nods, very amused. “An interesting look…but I’ll give it points for creativity.”
As the couple laughs again, Peter brings two fingers up to massage his temple as he feels a dull ache in his head.
“Headache?” Michelle frowns.
“Mhmm,” Peter confirms. “I thingk Mborgan made the braids a little too tight.”
“That’s no good.” MJ sympathizes, lowering her boy’s head back down onto her lap, braid side up so she can work on undoing the little knots. She makes quick work of it and within minutes, Peter’s hair is braid-less and the throbbing in head head dies down. In thanks, Peter snuggles his face closer Michelle’s middle, wrapping his arms around it as well.
“You thingk you can use a vacationd day tomborrow? I mbissed you today.” Peter whines, partly joking but sorta kinda being serious.
“From what I heard, your eyes were open for about thirty minutes today. Too busy sleeping to miss me that much.” MJ giggles at the sniffly boy with his head in her lap. He just shrugs in response, and she can feel his body relaxing and congested breaths evening out. “You going back to sleep on me already, Parker? Not even gonna let me tell you about my day?” She jokes again.
Peter snorts involuntarily as he turns his head to look up at her, eyes glossed with fever and sleepy but apologetic. “I’mb up I’mb up, tell mbe everything.”
She grabs the sides of his face sweetly, slightly squishing his cheeks while she kisses his forehead and then his nose. “I’m kidding, Peter. God your brain must be frying, come on let's go to bed.” She pats his cheek lightly and helps him sit up.
He yawns with his whole body, his hands stretching into the air and his back arching. “But it’s only like six, arend’t you hungry for dinnder?” He coughs into his fists while Michelle takes his other hand, helping him lift off the couch.
“Let me rephrase. You’re going to shower, put new pajamas on, and get in bed while I make us grilled cheeses, your second one today I'm assuming. How does that sound?” MJ asks, leading him to their bathroom.
Peter clears his throat as he sits on the closed toilet. “And…umb…and the tombato soup?”
The shower roars to life as MJ turns the handle. “You think I’d forget the most important part?” She scoffs, feigning hurt. Peter just smiled, the dopey smile he gets when he thinks about how in love he is with this girl. With two more quick forehead kisses she leaves him to shower.
Peter exits the shower feeling refreshed, less stuffy, and hungry once more. Thanks to the shower stream he can faintly smell the toasty cheesy smell from the kitchen and it gives him a nostalgic feeling.
As he grabs pajama pants and the MIT hoodie, Peter thinks of the first time he got sick after going to live with Ben and May. It was the first day of what was considered flu season and the sickly kid had contracted the virus at the drop of a hat. He was miserable the whole day, crying and wallowing in the aches and pains of the illness. The biggest issue, however, was that he refused to eat anything, that is until Ben decided to make himself a grilled cheese for dinner.
The older Parker noticed Peter looking the sandwich with feverish eyes. “Look tasty, bud?” Ben questioned, raising an eyebrow. Little Peter just nodded and Ben smiled, extremely relieved that his nephew was finally going to eat.
Sticking his pointer and middle finger in his mouth, Peter watches as his uncle stands from the couch and starts on another sandwich. “Uncle Ben?” Peter asks in a small voice. Ben looks back over to the kid and nods. “Do you have any of the-the red soup? Mommy always made grilled cheese with red soup.” Peter nearly whispered.
Ben thinks for a minute, not completely sure what the boy meant by red soup, but then it clicks. “Oh! Tomato soup?” He smiles as Peter nods. Ben open the cupboard to him and pulls out a can of tomato soup, flipping it in the air once to see Peter smile. “Tomato soup and grilled cheese coming right up monsieur Parker.” Ben says in a horrible French accent which makes the six year old giggle, as sound that was music to Ben’s ears after all tears. From then on, Peter would only insist on eating that particular meal anytime he had so much as a headache.
The door creaking open as MJ pushes it with her hip brings Peter out of his thoughts. She has the tray of grilled cheeses and soups in her hands and an amused look on her face. “You okay? Need help with something?”
Peter blinks and remembers that he’s sitting in the edge of their bed, in a towel, pajamas in hand. “Oh…no I’mb okay. Just thinking ‘bout stuff.”
MJ sets the tray down on her bedside table. “You already sound less stuffy. Maybe you should sleep in the shower.” She quips, not missing Peter's sweet tiny giggle as she grabs the water tank from the humidifier and takes it to the bathroom with her.
Peter gets dressed and settles into bed. He notices that Pepper has changed the sheets and his heart clinches, nearly overwhelmed by the love he feels from his family. He takes out his phone to text her a thank you but is intercepted by a string of texts from Tony.

Michelle returns from the bathroom, makeup off, hair down, and humidifier tank full of water. She sets the tank back in and turns the machine on, steam filling the air. After quickly putting on her own set of pajamas, MJ takes her and Peter’s dinner from the side table and places it on the bed between them. Peter wastes no time digging in, groaning in admiration for the food. He mumbles a thanks with his mouth full and MJ laughs, wiping a bit of soup off of his lip with her thumb.
“You’re welcome, loser.” She teases, beginning to eat her own meal. After a few bites she take the TV remote by her side and flips on Peter’s favorite sick day show.
As the Parks and Recreation theme song begins to play, Peter looks up at his girlfriend with appreciative eyes. “You’re too good to mbe.”
“You remember that next time I make you vacuum and you get pissy about it.” Michelle deadpans, but Peter knew she was messing around.
“I’m not messing around.” She clarifies, turning to look at his with one eyebrow raised.
“You really are a mbind reader.” Peter whispers with feverish wonder.
Throwing a paper towel at him playfully, MJ laughs and Peter joins her. They finish their food as the TV continues to play in the background, Peter yawning and coughing quietly as soon as he swallows his last bite. Without a word, MJ takes the empty plates and tray back to the kitchen. She turns off the bedroom lights as she reenters and tucks herself back under the covers. It's barely after 7 p.m. and the sun it only just starting to set, making the room glow a with dark blues and purples.
Peter is cuddled into her side as soon as she's back in bed, head resting on her chest and arm around her waist. “What am I gonna do with you Peter Parker?” She sighs, twirling her fingers through his already messy hair.
“Love mbe, no matter what? Even if I’mb yucky like this?” He pulls out the puppy dog eyes for this one. MJ may be stoic on the outside but not even she can resist the sweet sparkling glare.
“If I must.” She agrees, holding him tighter and resting her head on top of his.
But she’s happy to do it. Loving Peter Parker is an extremely easy thing, MJ thinks.
